He looked at me, stroking his white mustache as he thought it over. "I see," he said finally, his expression understanding. "And I understand completely. I would be happy to help you with your magic. But just what kind do you use?"
"Oh," I said with a casual shrug. "I use all types of magic."
A stunned silence fell over the guild hall, before it was broken by a collective, deafening shout.
"EEEEHHHHH?!"
Makarov stared at me, his eyes wide with disbelief. "Wait… what do you mean, all types?"
"Oh, I just know a lot of types," I explained. "You see, I have a Sacred Gear known as Voltaris, the Lightning Dragon God of Chaos. As his user, I have gained the ability to master all types of magic. Isn't that right, Voltaris?"
Just then, my Boosted Gear materialized on my arm, its yellow gems glowing.
"That's right," Voltaris's voice boomed, startling several of the nearby guild members. "And he's quite good. But in my opinion, not good enough."
"Heeey!" I whined, my voice pitching up. "I'm awesome, thank you very much!" I crossed my arms over my chest and pouted, ignoring the bewildered stares from everyone in the room.
"You may have a lot of skills," Voltaris continued, his voice echoing with a gravitas that silenced the entire hall, "but you lack proper experience. You have lucked out so many times. You've almost completely destroyed your body to protect everyone, but you always just fall back on those damn potions of yours. Without them, you'd be dead for sure. You literally don't take a break. Your luck will run out, partner, and trust me when I say, the day it does will be a very bad day."
I was speechless. Sure, I threw myself into dangerous situations, but I wasn't reckless… was I? I was going to say something, to defend myself, but before I could, Makarov's gentle voice cut in.
"My boy," he said, his old eyes filled with a deep, sad wisdom. "You may be strong, but not even the strongest person can hold the weight of the world on their shoulders alone. Trust me, I know. We all know this. That is why we are there for one another. What we can't do alone, we have our friends to help us accomplish."
He took a step closer, his presence seeming to fill the room. "I'm sure you have friends that you feel rely on you, that you feel you must protect. But I bet they're hurting, because they have to watch you get hurt for their sake."
"They may not say anything, but I bet they feel useless every time they see you take a blow that was meant for them. You're so young, and yet you carry so much burden. You need to cherish the fact that they are your family, and that they are there for you, just as you are for them."
It can't be… can it? They don't hurt just because I throw myself in front of danger for them, do they? The thought was a punch to the gut.
"Shakey N-no… t-that's not t-true," I stammered, the words tasting like a lie even to my own ears.
"It's in your eyes, kid," a gruff voice said from across the room. "You know it's true, but you don't want to believe it."
I turned to see a tall, muscular man with spiky blonde hair and a lightning bolt scar over his eye stand up from a table in the corner.
"Laxus," Makarov said, his voice a mixture of surprise and concern.
Laxus walked over, his heavy footsteps echoing in the quiet hall. "Kid, trust me when I say I've made my share of mistakes. I almost brought this entire guild to its knees. But enough of that. The reason I even bring it up is because I hurt my friends, my family, thinking that raw power was all the guild needed."
"But my friends… they brought me back to reality. They showed me that I'm not the strongest in this world, and that it's okay. I know now that they hurt because of me, because of my arrogance."
He came over to me and put a heavy hand on my shoulder, his gaze surprisingly gentle. "Trust in your family, kid. They are all you have in this world. Your friends are your family. They love ya. That much I can tell."
His words, combined with Makarov's, hit me like a physical blow. Akeno's worried smiles, Koneko's quiet glares, Rias's frantic cries… they weren't just relieved when I won; they were in pain while I was fighting. I had to fix this. I had to change.
"Thank you," I said, my voice quiet but firm. "I think… I think I know what I need to do when I get back."
"That's good," Makarov said with a relieved smile. "Now, what magic do you want to learn more about first?"
I thought about it. I had fire, lightning, and shadow on lock. But there was one I had dabbled in, one I knew had incredible potential.
"I think I'd like to learn more about Ice magic," I decided. "I only know a few basic spells, but I know I can go so much further with it, along with my other elements."
"I see," Makarov said, a twinkle in his eye. "Gray, would you mind?"
"Not at all, Gramps," a voice replied.
I looked over and saw a shirtless young man with dark, spiky hair walking toward us. "My name's Gray," he said, looking me up and down. "I guess I'll be your teacher, sort of. Follow me."
I did as he said, and we walked out a back door that led to a large, open clearing behind the guild hall. I saw that a lot of the Fairy Tail members had followed us, curious to see what would happen. Gray stopped in the middle of the clearing and turned to me.
"What's your main magic? The one you use the most," Gray asked, his arms crossed as he sized me up.
"Well, that would be my Fire Dragon Slayer magic," I answered.
