Erza sighed again, but her eyes held a competitive gleam. "I don't see why not. But if I win, then you must tell us everything you are capable of. No secrets."
"I was probably going to do that anyway, but deal!" I agreed instantly.
We all stopped and got into a ready stance, the air crackling with anticipation.
"Go!" Gajeel yelled.
We shot off. Erza immediately glowed with a bright light. When it faded, her heavy armor was gone, replaced by simple orange shorts, a white tank top, a baseball cap, and a whistle around her neck. I quickly used Observe. Her agility had shot up to 300. But I had an ace up my sleeve.
"Two can play at that game," I chuckled, as my large, leathery dragon wings erupted from my back. With a powerful downbeat, I launched myself into the sky.
"Oi!" Gajeel yelled from below, his voice filled with outrage. "How is that even fair?!"
"Never said we couldn't fly!" I called back. I looked down at him, used my finger to pull down my eyelid, and stuck my tongue out.
"When I get my hands on you, you're going down, pipsqueak!" he roared.
"Catch me if you can!"
I dove back down, skimming just above the treetops, easily catching up to Erza's impressive ground speed. And then, another terrible, wonderful idea came to me.
I summoned a magically reinforced bola from my inventory. With a flick of my wrist, I threw it. It sailed through the air and wrapped perfectly around her legs, sending her tumbling to the ground.
As I flew past her, I called out cheekily.
"We never did go over the rules!"
I heard her rip the bola apart with a furious growl. "You little sneak!" she yelled after me.
I saw a large, distinctive building up ahead and knew I had arrived. I landed gracefully in front of the massive double doors, the iconic Fairy Tail insignia proudly displayed above them. I waited for them to catch up.
Erza got to me first, her face still a mask of competitive fury, though I could see the amusement in her eyes. A few moments later, Gajeel came stomping up, looking equally annoyed.
I put my dragon wings away with a satisfied smile. They both gave me a knowing look, the kind that promised payback later.
"You know," I said, breaking the silence. "We're not going to get anything done if we just stand around out here."
Their annoyed expressions melted away, replaced by genuine smiles.
"Fine," Erza said, her voice filled with warmth. "I'll lead the way."
"Whatever," I declared loudly, puffing out my chest. "I'm going to find the strongest person here and fight them!"
I saw Gajeel sweat-drop at my bold proclamation. As Erza pushed open the massive doors, the first thing I had to do was dodge a flying table that came hurtling toward my head.
Yep. It was just like how I imagined it. A chaotic, joyful brawl was in full swing. I saw them all, Natsu, Gray, Lucy, Happy, all my favorite characters, right in the middle of the beautiful disaster. And then I heard it, a voice cutting through the din.
"You rowdy kids are going to give me a heart attack!" a booming voice echoed from the second-floor balcony, a sound so powerful it cut through the chaos of the brawl.
I looked up to see a giant shadow of a man looming over the railing. The effect was immediate. Every single guild member froze, the brawl coming to a screeching halt.
The giant shadow then shrank with surprising speed, revealing a very short, elderly man in a jester-like hat. Makarov Dreyar.
"Now," he said, his voice returning to a normal, grandfatherly tone. "If you kids are all settled down… Gajeel, Erza, what took you so long?"
"Forgive us, Master," Erza said, bowing her head respectfully. "I was reckless, and it cost us time."
"It's fine," Makarov said, his expression softening into a warm smile. "As long as you come back alive. I'm just happy that you're back home where you belong."
"If it wasn't for pipsqueak over here," Gajeel grunted, clapping me on the back with enough force to make my teeth rattle, "she wouldn't be alive at all."
As he said this, every single eye in the guild hall turned to me. I felt a hundred different gazes sizing me up. Makarov hopped down from the balcony, landing lightly on his feet before walking over to me.
"And what might your name be, child?" he asked, his voice kind and comforting.
"My name is Shiro, sir," I replied respectfully.
He held out his hand for me to shake. I did so, but as I did, he pulled me into a sudden, surprisingly strong hug. I heard him whisper, his voice filled with genuine emotion.
"Thank you so much for saving her."
"It's not a problem at all," I said, a little flustered. "I just wanted to help."
Makarov pulled back, his eyes curious. "So, what did you do?"
"He gave me potions to give her," Gajeel explained. "Made 'em himself, he said."
"Tell me, son," Makarov asked, his gaze sharp and knowing. "Are you a wizard?"
"Well, yeah."
"How would you like to be a part of our family?" he offered, a hopeful smile on his face.
I felt a pang of regret. "I'm sorry," I said, shaking my head. "I can't do that."
"It's okay, I understand," he said, though I could see a hint of disappointment in his eyes. "But could you please tell me why?"
"I'm sure you've heard of the peerages that devils have," I began. "I'm not a part of one, but I ended up becoming the King of my own. I have people I need to protect, those in my peerage, and those who aren't. But… I know it's asking a lot, but I would like for someone to teach me how to control my magic better so I can protect them. I'm sorry if I'm asking for too much, but I need to get stronger."
He looked at me, stroking his white mustache as he thought it over. "I see," he said finally, his expression understanding. "And I understand completely. I would be happy to help you with your magic. But just what kind do you use?"
