Chapter 281 - 279: No Nostalgia [4 Updates]
On the other end of the phone, Madam Reid looked at Henry Reid’s phone number, beamed with joy, and immediately answered. She hadn’t even had time to speak before Henry went straight to the point.
He said, "Mom, Elia Spencer has been kicked out of the company by Jane Spencer, and she and her mother have had their financial resources cut off by the Spencer Family. Elia will soon come to you; you know what to do, right!"
As Madam Reid listened to Henry’s report, curiosity quickly arose, and she asked, "Jane Spencer is so ruthless? What’s the reason?"
"How would I know? In any case, don’t agree to let her work at the company. I don’t like her," Henry paid no mind to Madam Reid’s gossiping curiosity and directly conveyed his purpose.
"Alright, alright, I understand." Madam Reid wasn’t foolish. She certainly wouldn’t give the fallen heiress a chance to pursue Henry.
Half an hour later, Elia indeed appeared at the Reid Family’s villa, looking for Madam Reid.
In the study, Madam Reid was already waiting. She was patient only because she was too idle and wanted to hear about the Spencer Family’s gossip.
When she saw Elia, she quickly beckoned her, saying, "Elia, it’s you! Come sit down."
"Auntie, I’m really sorry for bothering you." She was quite polite to outsiders.
Madam Reid looked at Elia sitting across the desk and immediately put down her brush, smiling as she asked, "Are you here to talk to me about something?"
Hearing Madam Reid’s concerned inquiry, Elia’s eyes turned red as tears quickly flooded out. She cried, "Auntie, I came to you because I’m in a dire situation. Maya Spencer and my elder sister teamed up and pushed me out of the company, and they’ve cut off my mother’s and my funding. I’m begging you, Auntie, for the sake of old ties, can you arrange a job for me at the Reid Clan Group?"
"Why are they targeting you then?" Madam Reid curiously pursued.
Afterwards, Elia went on a tirade against the Spencers from start to finish, especially demonizing Maya and Jane Spencer, portraying herself as extremely innocent.
An hour later, she took a long sip of the flower tea brought by a servant, sighed deeply, and said, "That’s basically how things are. Now everyone is embroiled in a chaotic fight, and I’ve been innocently caught up in it."
Listening to the Spencer Family’s gossip, Madam Reid was nearly dying of laughter, but she still put on a worried face and said with much difficulty, "Elia, I truly sympathize with your and your mother’s predicament, but regarding work, I really can’t help you. Jane and Maya’s backing is the Owen Clan Group, and since they’re giving you a hard time, how could our Reid Clan Group dare to meddle? So please understand, Auntie."
Listening to Madam Reid’s excuses, Elia was about to explode. She hadn’t expected to spend so much effort, only to get this result.
Thus, she furrowed her brows, pitifully pleaded, "Auntie, they just kicked me out of the company; they’re not preventing other companies from hiring me—it won’t trouble the Reid Clan Group. Can you help me arrange a position on Henry’s office floor? Any position will do."
Madam Reid’s expression changed abruptly upon hearing her request to work on the same floor as Henry, even her gaze was one of disdain.
She suddenly chuckled, saying, "Elia, working is a pretext; trying to get close to our Henry is the truth! Auntie might as well tell you frankly, there’s no chance between you and Henry. Our Reid Family is, after all, a prominent family; how could we possibly marry the daughter of a concubine, and you’re not even favored in the Spencer Family? So our Henry has no reason to get involved with you."
Madam Reid’s sudden change of face left Elia dumbfounded.
She recalled how, three years ago, when Henry was hospitalized, Madam Reid wouldn’t stop praising her. How could this be her demeanor now?
Once she came back to her senses, she finally understood Madam Reid. She had been merely killing time listening to gossip, while inwardly she looked down on Elia from start to finish.
Thinking of this, Elia was infuriated, shaking all over. She had never imagined she’d experience such a downfall.
Seeing Madam Reid’s contempt and disdain, she took a deep breath, stood up abruptly from her chair with a darkened face, and said, "Sorry to bother." Then she turned and headed to the door.
"Elia, wait a moment." At this moment, Madam Reid called out to her, quickly catching up, and said, "Don’t say Auntie doesn’t care about old ties or about you and your mother’s survival—there’s 200,000 in cash in this card for you to take and use for your living. As for work, take your time to find it. Young people, as long as they’re willing to work hard and aren’t lazy, they can always find work."
Elia stood where she was, looking at the bank card Madam Reid was offering, and clenched her small fists tightly in anger, wishing she could hit Madam Reid.
This was the first time she’d been so humiliated, and it was given by Henry’s mother.
She took a deep breath, turned to look at Madam Reid, and said with emphasis, "I haven’t fallen so low as to need your charity; just consider it me being blind, seeing your Reid Family wrongly, but at least I’ve seen through you ahead of time."
Madam Reid, listening to Elia’s words, indifferently put away her bank card, coldly laughed, and said, "With someone like you, dreaming of marrying into our Reid Family is laughable."
Listening to Madam Reid’s sneers, Elia glared at her fiercely and quickly walked out without looking back.
In the car, Elia thought about her futile efforts today and the attitude of Henry and Madam Reid toward her. Every time she choked on her breath, her chest hurt.
She hadn’t expected Madam Reid to be such a snobbish person, saying those bitter words.
Thinking of this, she shifted all her resentment onto Maya.
If it weren’t for her appearance, if it weren’t for her leading Jane Spencer to fire her, how could she have fallen to such a state?
She took a deep breath and glanced at the time on the dashboard; it was already 4 PM, an hour before Maya finished work. She dialed a call to confirm Maya was still at the company, then drove toward the Owen Clan Group.
In the office, Maya was happily playing games, completely unaware of the approaching danger.
While she was having the time of her life, Elia suddenly kicked open her office door and stormed in angrily.
From behind the desk, Maya was startled by the door kicking, quickly looked up at the doorway, only to see Elia approaching with a fruit knife.
Seeing the fruit knife in her hand, Maya gulped in fear and jumped onto the chair, nervously asking, "Elia, what do you want to do?"
"What do I want to do? Maya Spencer, you say what I want to do?" Elia spoke as she raised the knife and walked toward Maya.
Maya saw this and immediately grabbed books and pen holders from the desk to throw at her, shouting, "Help! Someone help!"
