Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 476 - 372 : Run!!

Run.

The word was still sitting in the back of Kagetsu’s skull when the white light behind the source candidate started to curdle.

Not fade. Curdle — going thick and dark at the edges, the way milk goes wrong.

Kagetsu’s hand-connection throbbed a second time, harder, like whatever had sent the warning was watching to see if he’d listened. He hadn’t moved yet. He wasn’t sure his legs had gotten the message the rest of him had.

"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s voice, flat and fast, already moving. "Whatever your hand just told you, say it out loud. Now."

"It just said ’run.’" Kagetsu’s mouth had gone dry. "That’s all I got. One word."

"Then we treat it as the correct amount of information," Orochimaru said, and put himself between Kagetsu and the door without breaking stride.

---

The source candidate’s composure — steady through Obito’s guilt, steady through the boy’s recognition — finally cracked.

"No." She said it to the dark, not to any of them. "Not here. Not now, I only just—"

"You knew this would follow you." Obito’s voice had lost every trace of the tired-kindness from the boy’s unmasking. What was left underneath was pure, old fear. "That’s why you were being patient about being angry at me. You were listening for it the whole time you were talking, weren’t you."

"I was hoping I was wrong. Hope was the one thing fifteen years alone never quite managed to starve out of me."

The dark in the doorway didn’t answer either of them.

It just kept curdling, thick and slow, swallowing the white light one degree at a time.

[Divergent Expression — Emergency Read]

World: Bleach / Talent Card System

Subject: Presence behind the second threshold

Confidence: Rising, non-linear

Cross-Match: 97% — historical signature fragment, "Black Zetsu," logged Ch. 325 (residual read on Rasa’s tissue, never independently confirmed on-page)

Advisory: This is the first direct, embodied confirmation of Black Zetsu’s existence this arc. Prior sightings were secondhand or inferential. This is not.

Kagetsu read the notification twice, the second time slower, hoping the numbers would be different.

They weren’t.

"It’s real," he said out loud, and heard how thin his own voice sounded saying it. "Black Zetsu’s real. It’s been real this whole time and it just walked in behind the one thing we thought was the worst thing in the room."

---

Hiruzen made a sound that wasn’t quite a word.

He’d survived a memorial stone with Obito’s name on it, survived learning that name was a lie he’d been grieving for fifteen years, and none of it had prepared his face for what it did now — the specific stillness of a man watching the last thing he believed was fiction confirm itself as fact.

Danzo, for the second Chapter running, didn’t move — but something in the set of his shoulders had gone rigid in a way it hadn’t for Obito, hadn’t for the source candidate, hadn’t even for the earlier, smaller flickers of alarm this corridor had produced.

"That name is in files older than either of us," Danzo said, quiet. "Files I was told didn’t need updating because the thing in them was dead."

"Nothing about tonight has been what anyone was told," Obito said. Some of his old bitter humor tried to surface and failed halfway. "Welcome to the club, Danzo. Membership’s mandatory as of about four minutes ago."

---

The dark resolved.

Not into a shape exactly — into an absence with a shape’s outline, glossy-black, half a face pressed against the inside of it like something trying on a mask from underneath.

It spoke without a mouth Kagetsu could see move.

"Fifteen years," it said, and the voice landed in the corridor like something dropped from a height. "You built a door and forgot to check what was already standing behind it."

Obito’s human eye went wide.

"You’ve been there. The whole time. Since before I ever—"

"Since before you were anything worth watching." Black Zetsu’s not-face turned, slow, taking in the room — the figure, restraints straining; Kushina, chains lit and aimed at nothing in particular because there was nothing in particular yet worth aiming at; the boy, gone very still. "Interesting. You built more than I expected. He’ll want to know that."

The source candidate had gone rigid, every trace of the composure she’d walked through the door with stripped away.

"You told me you couldn’t reach this far," she said, and it wasn’t quite an accusation — closer to a plea for it to still be true.

"I told you a great many things, the way he told Obito a great many things." Black Zetsu’s tone didn’t change at all, which was somehow worse than if it had turned cruel. "None of us are especially good at telling each other the truth. It runs in the family."

---

"He." Minato’s kunai came up fully level again, no half-measures left in it. "Say the name. Say it plainly, the way we made the last one say his."

"You already know the name." Black Zetsu’s attention slid to Kagetsu specifically, and something about being looked at by it felt like being catalogued for later use. "You’ve known it since the first Chapter of this arc, little vessel. I’m simply the part of him that never needed permission to visit."

The boy hadn’t spoken since the source candidate had looked at him and said oh, they let you out. He spoke now, voice low, gold eyes fixed on the not-face like he was daring it to look away first.

"You said ’more than he expected.’" His hands had curled into fists at his sides. "What did you expect. Say it."

"Less," Black Zetsu said simply. "He expected less of all of you. That’s the part he’s going to find interesting."

Divergent Expression pulsed a fresh line before Kagetsu could stop it.

[Divergent Expression]

Advisory: Structural link confirmed between subject and the still-unconfirmed whereabouts of Uchiha Madara. This entity may function as an extension, observer, or direct communication channel. Treat any information given to it as information given to him.

"Everything you’ve seen here," Kagetsu said slowly, "you’re about to hand straight to Madara."

"Everything I’ve seen here," Black Zetsu agreed, "I already have."

---

The figure’s restraints snapped.

Not from any outside force — from the inside, gold light flooding the crack in its face until the seams themselves gave way, like something had finally stopped holding on because holding on had stopped mattering.

It didn’t lunge, didn’t attack. It simply stood, unrestrained for the first time since Ch. 360, and every line of it read as fear rather than freedom.

"Get them out," it said, voice raw, staring at Black Zetsu the way a person stares at a debt they thought had been paid off years ago. "All of them. Kushina, the boy, Kagetsu — get them out of this corridor, right now, because whatever it just decided to report, it decided it in front of every one of them."

Orochimaru didn’t ask for elaboration.

He simply moved, one hand already closing on Kagetsu’s shoulder, angling him bodily toward the corridor’s mouth.

---

"No." Kushina’s chains flared, gold and absolute, cutting across the space between the group and the door instead of retreating with them. "I am done being the one who leaves before the truth finishes talking."

"Kushina—" the figure started.

"You don’t get to decide that for me either." Her eyes hadn’t left Black Zetsu once. "Not you. Not him. Not whatever’s wearing a face made of nothing."

Something that might have been respect crossed the not-face, brief and unreadable.

"Your mother stood exactly where you’re standing, once," Black Zetsu said, and for the first time its voice carried something other than flat amusement. "She used almost the same words. It didn’t end the way she expected either."

Kushina’s breath caught, just once, before she forced her chains back level.

Black Zetsu’s not-face turned toward her fully, slow, almost delighted.

"There she is," it said. "The other half of the promise, right on schedule."

The words landed wrong in the room, and Kagetsu watched Kushina’s chains falter for just a half-second — the same falter Ch. 371 had left unresolved — before she forced them steady again through sheer will.

The white light behind Black Zetsu — still curdled, still wrong — split down the middle a second time.

Not into more darkness this time.

Into gold.

Kagetsu’s hand-connection seized so hard he nearly went to his knees, and this time it wasn’t a word.

It was a name he’d never once let himself think, forming somewhere behind his own eyes in a voice that felt, impossibly, like it belonged to him.

And something his hand-connection had never once tried to name before started, very deliberately, walking toward the seam from the other side.
