Chapter 475 - 371 : What Crosses Over!!
The knocking didn’t stop.
It got patient instead, which was worse.
Three beats, a pause exactly long enough to make you think it was done, then three more — steady, unhurried, coming from a door that had been sealed shut and silent since Chapter 367.
"Obito." Hiruzen’s voice had gone very quiet. "You said this door doesn’t open from the other side."
"It doesn’t." Obito hadn’t taken his human eye off the seam. "It can’t. I built the failsafe myself."
"Then what’s knocking?"
Obito didn’t answer.
Kagetsu watched him not answer, and understood, for the first time since the mask had come off, that fear on that face looked exactly like fear on anyone else’s. No performance left in it. No composure held in reserve. Just a presumed-dead man standing very still in front of a door he’d sworn was permanently one-way, doing math he didn’t like the answer to.
Danzo’s visible calm hadn’t cracked once through Hiruzen’s grief or the boy’s questions or the reveal of a name off a memorial stone.
It cracked now, just slightly — a flicker of something that might have been recalculation.
The knocking stopped answering questions too, and started answering the door instead.
---
The seam split down the middle in one motion, silent, no grinding stone or torn paper — just there, and then open, the way a held breath just becomes an exhale.
Light came through first. Not gold this time.
White. Flat. Wrong.
[Divergent Expression — Live Read]
World: Bleach / Talent Card System
Subject: Unclassified — signature crossing wall-seal threshold
Confidence: Low, rising
Advisory: Structural profile inconsistent with prior door-crossings (boy, shape, masked man). This entity did not knock to be let in. It knocked because it could already get through, and chose to announce itself anyway.
Kagetsu felt his stomach drop a half second before he understood why.
"It’s not asking permission," he said out loud. "It’s being polite."
That was so much worse than a threat.
---
The shape in the doorway didn’t stir.
The figure did.
Every restraint on it — chakra-woven, physical, incidental — went taut at once, and it made a sound that wasn’t fear exactly.
Recognition.
"No." Barely a whisper. "No, no, not her, not now—"
"Her?" Kushina’s chains snapped fully bright, aimed at the widening seam. "Who’s her?"
The figure didn’t get the chance to answer.
Something stepped through the white light, and the corridor went cold in a way that had nothing to do with temperature.
---
She looked like Kagetsu.
That was the first thing everyone registered, and the wrongest.
Same build, same set to the shoulders, same faint scar under the left eye that Kagetsu had gotten in Ch. 298 and never told anyone about because it wasn’t a story worth telling. But the face wearing it was a woman’s, older, calm in a way that had nothing to do with peace.
Minato’s kunai didn’t waver, but his eyes flicked once to Kagetsu — checking, instinctively, that the boy standing next to him and the shape standing in the doorway were in fact two different people. Kushina’s chains stopped mid-motion, gold light guttering for half a second like even they didn’t know which direction to point. Orochimaru’s stance didn’t change at all, which somehow read louder than if it had.
[Divergent Expression — Emergency Reclassification]
Subject: New arrival
Cross-Match: 91% — "the source candidate," last confirmed active Ch. 358-359
Secondary Match: 76% — Kagetsu (self), structural only, non-hostile overlap pattern consistent with the arc’s known "shared origin point" family
Confidence: High
Advisory: This is not a new entity. This is the source candidate, returned, and no longer hiding what it looks like when it isn’t wearing someone else’s voice.
"You," Obito said, and for the first time since the mask came off, something in him that had stayed composed through Hiruzen’s grief and the figure’s begging and the boy’s question finally, visibly, cracked. "You’re supposed to still be on the other side. I made sure of it."
"You made sure of a great many things." Her voice was quiet, and it didn’t shake at all, which was somehow more unsettling than if it had. "Fifteen years is a long time to be sure of something in the dark, Obito."
"I didn’t put you in the dark to be cruel."
"No." Something almost gentle crossed her face, and it was worse than anger would have been. "You put me there because you couldn’t decide whether I was a person or a problem, and it was easier to leave the question shut behind a door than answer it. I’ve had fifteen years to think about which one you’d have picked, if you’d ever made yourself pick."
---
The figure was shaking.
Not from the restraints. From something underneath them.
"I didn’t call her," it said, to no one, to everyone. "I swear I didn’t call her, I haven’t been able to reach that far since Ch. 359, I don’t have anything left to reach with—"
"I know." The source candidate didn’t look at the figure yet. Her eyes stayed on Obito, and there was nothing kind in them. "You didn’t call me. He kept me on a very short leash for a very long time, and leashes fray."
"Fifteen years." Hiruzen’s voice cracked on the number, doing the arithmetic against everything he’d just learned. "Everything traces back fifteen years."
"Everything traces back to one night," the source candidate said, still not looking away from Obito, "and one promise he didn’t keep."
---
Minato’s kunai had shifted target without anyone telling it to — no longer purely on Obito, splitting attention between two threats that clearly hated each other more than they hated the room.
Orochimaru hadn’t moved from his place between the group and the door.
"I don’t suppose," he said, mild as ever, "either of you would care to clarify which one of you is currently the bigger problem."
"He is." The source candidate’s mouth twitched, not quite a smile. "He’s always been the bigger problem. He just usually has better manners about it."
Obito’s jaw worked once before he answered.
"I didn’t come here for you." His voice had lost the tired-kindness it carried unmasking the boy. "I came for him." A glance at the figure, restrained and shaking. "You weren’t supposed to be a variable tonight."
"I stopped being a variable you controlled the moment you decided fifteen years alone was an acceptable price for someone else to pay." She took one step forward, and the temperature in Corridor Seven dropped again, sharp enough that breath fogged. "You collect broken things when they’re inconvenient to you, Obito. I’m here to collect something too."
---
The boy, silent since Obito had turned to question him, finally spoke.
"Wait." His voice cracked — young again, scared again. "You have my mark. The 76% match, that’s not just Kagetsu-adjacent, that’s—"
He didn’t finish.
He didn’t have to.
Divergent Expression finished it for him.
[Divergent Expression — Cross-Reference]
Subject: The boy / source candidate
Structural Overlap: 68% and climbing
Advisory: The boy’s earlier destabilization under Obito’s proximity was not random drift. It was resolving toward a specific match. This one.
The source candidate looked at the boy for the first time since crossing the threshold, and something in her carefully composed face finally, genuinely broke.
"Oh," she said, very softly. "Oh, they let you out."
"You know me." It wasn’t a question. The boy’s gold eyes had gone wide, twelve years old again in a way he hadn’t looked since Ch. 367. "You know me. Nobody knows me. Even I don’t know me."
"I knew you before either of us had a name for what we were." She hadn’t moved toward him, hadn’t reached for him — kept exactly where she stood, like closing that distance was a decision she didn’t trust herself to make carefully. "I held you before he decided you needed to be held somewhere I couldn’t reach."
Hiruzen made a sound low in his throat. Kushina’s chains had stopped moving entirely, gone taut and silent, every eye in the corridor swinging between the boy and the woman wearing Kagetsu’s scar like the last thirty seconds had rearranged the whole shape of the mystery they’d been chasing since Ch. 326.
---
Kagetsu’s hand-connection — silent since Ch. 365 — lit up all at once, hot and sudden, like a held breath being let go on the other end for the first time in six Chapters.
Not a pulse this time.
A word, pushed straight down the channel into the back of his skull, in a voice that wasn’t the figure’s and wasn’t the boy’s and wasn’t anything he’d catalogued yet.
Run.
He didn’t have time to ask who’d sent it.
The source candidate’s calm broke apart in the space of a single breath — not into rage, into something closer to grief with its teeth bared — and the white light behind her in the doorway surged, filling the seam edge to edge like the door itself had decided it wasn’t finished opening after all.
"He’s not the only thing that got left in the dark for fifteen years," she said, and for the first time her voice wasn’t quiet at all. "And I am done being patient about who else is still in there."
Obito’s human eye went wide.
"That’s not possible." He said it the way a man says something he desperately needs to still be true. "There was only ever one door back there. I built it. I would know if there was a second one."
"You built the one you could see." The source candidate didn’t look away from him. "You never once thought to ask what was on the other side of the side you already knew about."
Behind her, deep in the white light, something else began to move.
