Naruto: Kurotsuchi Mayuri

Chapter 477 - 373 : The Name In My Own Hand!!

The gold light didn’t curdle the way the dark had.

It thickened instead, warm and slow, the way honey pools before it moves.

Kagetsu’s hand-connection was still seized around that impossible almost-name, and the closer the light came, the more the shape of it sharpened — not a word exactly.

A frequency. His own, played back at him from somewhere he’d never been.

The detached hand, still locked around the figure’s wrist, twitched once. Not a struggle. Something closer to recognition — a limb reaching, however uselessly, toward a sound it already knew.

"Kagetsu." Orochimaru’s grip on his shoulder hadn’t loosened since the evacuation order. "Whatever that is, it isn’t Black Zetsu. Your face just did something Black Zetsu never got out of you."

"It’s not." Kagetsu’s voice came out thinner than he wanted. "It feels like—"

He didn’t finish, because the light finished it for him.

---

A figure stepped through the gold, unhurried, and for the second time in two Chapters the room went quiet around a face that shouldn’t have existed.

Older. Maybe thirty, thirty-five. Same jaw, same restless hands Kagetsu had spent his whole life not knowing what to do with. Silver eyes instead of brown — the only real difference, and somehow the only one that mattered.

He wore no mask, no scar, nothing borrowed from anyone else’s face the way Obito’s had been. Just Kagetsu’s own bone structure, worn a decade and a half further into itself, carrying itself like a man who’d had a long time to get used to standing still.

[Divergent Expression — Emergency Read]

World: Bleach / Talent Card System

Subject: New arrival, gold threshold

Cross-Match: 91% — Nara Kagetsu (self), direct structural read, not overlap

Secondary Match: 34% — the Corridor Seven wall-seal itself

Confidence: Rising

Advisory: This is not possession, echo, or ancestor. This reads as a preserved fragment of Kagetsu’s own signature, split off and independently developed since the mark’s very first activation — Ch. 336. Fifteen years is not the relevant number here. Thirty-six Chapters is.

"Thirty-six," Kagetsu said out loud, before he understood why the number mattered. "That’s — that’s how long it’s been since the mark first activated."

"That’s how long I’ve been standing on the other side of a door you never once asked to open from your end," the figure said, and the voice was his, roughened by years he hadn’t lived. "You’d think that’d earn a person something."

---

Hiruzen made a sound that had, by now, become the corridor’s unofficial rhythm section.

"Another one," he said, mostly to himself. "How many more doors does this seal have. I came into this corridor tonight expecting a disclosure deadline, not an inventory."

"I don’t think it’s a door problem, sensei." Obito’s human eye had gone wide, and for once the fear on his face wasn’t aimed at himself. "That’s not one of mine. I never touched that signature. I wouldn’t have known how — everything I built came from Uzushiogakure. This didn’t."

The source candidate had gone very still, staring at the newcomer with something that wasn’t recognition exactly — closer to a woman doing arithmetic she didn’t like the answer to.

"He’s not from Uzushiogakure," she said slowly. "He’s not from anything I did either. Whatever this is, it happened without either of us in the room."

Even Black Zetsu, unbothered through everything so far, tilted its not-face a fraction toward the gold light.

"Curious," it said, and for the first time all night, the flat certainty in its voice had a crack in it. "I did not know this was living in the walls."

---

The older Kagetsu — because there was no other honest way to think of him — looked around the room with the calm of someone who’d had a very long time to plan exactly this entrance.

"You," he said, nodding once to the figure. "You held my hand for six Chapters and never once asked what it wanted."

"It didn’t feel like it wanted anything." The figure’s voice cracked. "It felt like a tether. I didn’t know—"

"I know you didn’t. That’s not an accusation." He turned, slow, taking in Kushina’s chains, Minato’s kunai, Orochimaru’s hand still locked on the younger Kagetsu’s shoulder. "None of this is an accusation. I just got tired of being the part of him that watched everything happen and never got asked what it thought."

---

"What do you think." Kagetsu made himself say it, even though his own voice in someone else’s mouth was the strangest thing he’d heard all arc, worse than the shape, worse than the boy, worse than anything with a face that wasn’t supposed to exist. "You’ve been — what, watching? This whole time?"

"Every Chapter." Something that might have been a smile crossed the older face, tired and real. "Every time you got knocked down and got back up anyway. Every time you let yourself get talked into being the reasonable one in a room full of people who’d stopped being reasonable Chapters ago. I watched all of it from a door you built and never checked twice."

"That’s not—" Kagetsu’s throat tightened. "That’s not fair. I didn’t know you were there."

"I know." The older Kagetsu’s silver eyes softened, just slightly. "I’m not angry about that. I stopped being angry about that a long time ago, somewhere around the point I realized being angry at a version of myself who didn’t know any better was a waste of the only company I had. I’m here about something else."

---

Orochimaru’s kunai was already up, angled between Kagetsu and the newcomer, precise as ever.

"Then say what," he said, flat. "Plainly. The way we’ve made everyone else in this corridor say it eventually."

The older Kagetsu’s gaze slid to him, unbothered by the blade.

"You caught him every time he fell," he said. "I watched that too. Thank you. Genuinely." His eyes moved back to Kagetsu. "But there’s a version of tonight where he doesn’t get caught next time. Where the split doesn’t just widen — it finishes. I’ve spent thirty-six Chapters learning exactly what that would look like, and I came through that door specifically to make sure it doesn’t happen."

---

Kushina’s chains, still leveled at Black Zetsu, wavered for the first time all night — torn between two directions that both mattered.

"Wait." Her voice was sharp. "You’re saying Kagetsu could — what, come apart completely? Worse than the hand?"

"I’m saying the hand was the warning." The older Kagetsu’s calm cracked, just once, into something closer to grief. "And nobody in this corridor has been listening to warnings tonight. Not from him." A nod to Obito. "Not from her." A glance at the source candidate. "Not from the thing made of nothing standing in the corner being smug about how much it already knows."

Black Zetsu’s not-face didn’t so much as flicker.

"I’m always listening," it said. "Nobody said I had to act on it."

Minato had lowered his kunai an inch without seeming to notice he’d done it, attention fully on Kagetsu now instead of any of the room’s louder threats.

"If this is real," he said, quiet, "then it’s the first warning tonight that isn’t about somebody else’s fifteen years. It’s about his. Right now."

---

"So act on it now," the older Kagetsu said, and turned fully toward his younger self for the first time. "Because I didn’t cross a threshold I’ve spent thirty-six Chapters learning how to open just to introduce myself."

He raised his hand — the same hand, the same scar Kagetsu had never told anyone about — and pressed it flat against the air between them.

Not toward Kagetsu’s chest.

Toward the detached hand still gripping the figure’s wrist, six Chapters silent, six Chapters split from the body it belonged to.

The hand twitched a second time, harder, straining faintly against the figure’s grip like it recognized exactly what was being asked of it.

"I came to finish what that door started," the older Kagetsu said. "And I need every one of you to understand that finishing it is going to hurt."

Kagetsu felt something answer in his own chest before he’d decided to let it — a pull, low and certain, running from his ribs straight down to a hand he hadn’t fully controlled in six Chapters.

"Finish it how," he said, and his voice didn’t sound steady anymore. "You still haven’t said how."

The older Kagetsu didn’t answer.

He simply closed the last of the distance between them, silver eyes locked on Kagetsu’s, and reached.
