Fractures of Eternity

Chapter 46: The Goddess Breaks

Why are matters of the heart so hard to handle? Why are you so hard to handle, Loki? None of that matters anymore; this is the place where this mortal heart dies once and for all.

“Hah!? Tongue-tied? Give me a break! You think that would affect me?” I smirked, hiding all of the pain that was wishing to burst out of me.

My chest hurts… It hurts so much yet… Fight the emotion! Destroy it! This is never meant for me!

“You fucked me because you owed me for saving you?” I broke out in a fit of laughter soon after those words left my mouth.

This is gold. Pure luxurious gold. A new one, Loki, you’re utterly hilarious. You know nothing of me. Rem knows nothing of me! No one knows me! I…

“If that was the case, then you should’ve just let me suffer the entire time! Imprudent mortal! Do you think I’m going to thank you for that?!” I suddenly screeched, leaving me almost without breath to spare.

My voice was still hoarse from yesterday, and my scream had made it a hundred times worse, yet I stood against the strongest vampire who ever lived in this era. Usually, royal vampires had a death range of two meters, but this one’s was six meters.

In this range, he could make my brain melt down before I could even flick my finger. The only way to fight a fed blood sucker like him was to throw bodies at him.

But who’d run into instant death willingly?

Thankfully, Loki couldn’t kill me because of our bond, but he could destroy my limbs, or worse.

I still remember when you said you could make me into a blob of flesh if you wanted. Truly horrific.

However, the true extent of his magic was worse. He could create blood from thin air to use as a weapon, much like the cages and spikes he had used to subdue the demons from before. One slight miss of concentration while he used his magic, and someone nearby might’ve died instantly.

Though using such power drained them, which was why vampires carried a blood pack around to refill their power. This also applied to Loki, but to a tenth degree, since he would have to drink more to keep his magic going. Something he had done since he had filled himself with my divine blood, making him a complete menace.

I could feel the magical energy radiating from him, even if he didn’t have any active spells. He was truly the first vampire to possess magic in thousands of years.

You… are magnificent and are probably my death.

This mortal stood against the strongest being who ever existed, since I had inherited my divine power from my ancient soul. It possessed both destructive and creative properties, as well as the power to predict future events.

Much like him, I was limited in what I could do and couldn’t since any burst of energy bright enough could alert the living gods to my presence.

That would also mean your end, but you don’t need to know that.

At all times, I used my magic; the brooch kept me from losing control, alerting me when I was approaching the limit of a mortal. In the end, though, Loki and I were harmless to each other.

I have no desire to hurt you. No… I don’t want to hurt you. Hah… These feelings are… making me irrational. I never wanted this to happen. I was supposed to save you and leave your life without making an impact, and now… I’ve ruined… I’m sorry.

“You all think you know me when, in reality, you mortals know nothing about me!” I screamed as the jar I tried so hard to keep covered spilled out of me.

Why do your words hurt so much? Why does my heart ache so much? I thought I killed it long ago! Why… does it…

I probably was playing right into his hands, but I didn’t care. In the end, nothing would matter anymore. If it came to it, I would destroy this city and take him and his brother, Oswald, with me if I had to.

“Everyone just sees me as a fucking abomination!” Everything was slipping out of me.

Is it fair to be seen that way, even though I never wanted to be? All I wanted was to live an everyday life with Nene! Why do I have to be this god?! Why can’t I be…

I grabbed my brooch, ready to tear it off.

But what if I hurt you? I…

That thought alone caused a throb in my heart, tightening my grip on the small accessory.

No! I can’t be weak. So, what if you get hurt!? You don’t give a crap about me or what I feel! I need to be better! To be more than a simple girl!

“I’m an abomination that doesn’t deserve to fucking roam the world like I am! Even so, I want to live, and no one will take that from me!” I shriek, feeling liberated by everything that spilled out.

It was the first time I had ever worked everything out since that day six years ago. Never once had I allowed my feelings to run wild like this.

All I have to do is rip this brooch off and take you down before you do anything to damage me. But… in this range…

That was when I locked eyes with the vampire before me, and I couldn’t feel a single ounce of animosity out of him.

Eh? Why are you…

Shook my head, biting my lip as I shook away that thought.

Are you looking down on me? You dare pity me?! I don’t need it! How dare you?!

“All you people do is hate me for what I am! I bet you feel disgusted by what you allowed me to do to you last night! Are you filled with regret?! Is that it?! Pitiful! You should be grateful you lay with a goddess!” I laughed maniacally, unable to stop my emotions anymore.

Ah… I don’t want to stop them. See me for who I am. Hate me… Detest me so I can put this to rest. So… please stop looking at me like that! I… I’m a monster! Stop looking at me like I’m a normal human being breaking down in front of you!

“Your parents are only two of the casualties that were caused because I exist! Does that disgust you, Loki?!” I continued to rant, triggering the vampire’s blue, purplish gaze to soften as his expression relaxed.

Why… are you… Stop!

“Vivian,” Loki called my name out, taking a step towards me.

How dare you take a step towards me! I’m a monster! You should step away! Running away! Calling for backup! Anything but walking towards me unarmed!

This vampire was in no battle pose, nor did I feel any magical energy gathering from him. His approach, though, caused me to go haywire as I couldn’t help but feel he was undermining my authority.

Why?!

“Shut up and stay away from me! You’ve got nothing to say to me, pathetic mortal! The only reason I’m here is that I’m bound to you for life, and that you’re destined to die! You’re nothing to me! Nothing but a link I need to protect!” I continued on my verbal assault, taking a step back from him.

No… I don’t… mean a word of that. You… You are…

He meant something, even though I didn’t want him to. I cared for him, but I couldn’t love him or anyone else.

“You’re nothing to me,” I whimpered as teardrops fell from my stinging eyes.

Eh? Why? I…

I reached towards my cheeks only to feel the moisture from them streaming down.

When was the last time I ever cried like this? I thought they had dried up. Why have they returned for someone like you? You… make me something I’m not! I…

“Vivi,” Loki breathed, as his gaze softened even more.

No! Don’t look at me like that! I’m a monster! I can’t be anything else but that!
