Chenyang asked curiously, "How do you know? And what the hell is ’Little Master Extinction’?"
Director Liu chuckled dismissively. "Wen Xiaoke is a top student the hospital president recruited last year. Even before graduating, she’d built up quite a reputation from volunteering at a few free clinics. Once she got to the hospital, it was like a dragon returning to the deep. Her growth rate was nothing short of monstrous.
She also has a very independent personality. She’s quiet but a real stickler for the facts. When she first joined the hospital, all the department heads were fighting over her.
The hospital president couldn’t decide which department to put her in, so he let her choose for herself. She had absolutely no clue about social etiquette back then.
In front of all those department heads, she said that surgery was all for show, internal medicine was full of slaves to their equipment, and only the emergency department was right for her.
But as it happened, Liu Yun was the only director at the time who wasn’t interested in her. When she heard Liu Yun’s refusal, Xiaoke exploded on the spot. Not only did she make a one-month bet with Liu Yun, she also told the hospital president to either let her into the emergency department, or she would walk out the door that very instant."
Chenyang asked, confused, "A one-month bet?"
"The gist was that she asked Liu Yun to give her one month. If she managed to see the most patients in the ER and get the lowest complaint rate within that month, Liu Yun would have to let her in. And on top of that, she would be granted every privilege allowed within the department’s rules."
Chenyang sucked in a sharp breath. "She dared to make such an outrageous claim as an intern?"
"It was outrageous, but she really had the talent to back it up. A month later, she actually became the doctor who had seen the most patients that month."
"When patients come to our City Hospital’s emergency department, aren’t doctors assigned to them? Logically, every doctor’s patient load should be more or less the same. For her to see more than everyone else, the only way I can think of is if she just waited around to grab patients without eating, drinking, or even going to the bathroom, right?"
Director Liu shook his head. "No, her patient volume wasn’t high for the reason you think. It was... she straight-up snatched them!"
"Snatched them? The other doctors just let her get away with a nasty habit like that?"
"Of course they didn’t. The problem was, they couldn’t win an argument against her. Every time a patient came in, just as another doctor was about to see them, she would follow right behind and ask how they planned to treat the patient. Because the other doctors hadn’t fully diagnosed the issue or needed assistance from equipment, their answers would be vague. She, however, could provide a precise and accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan on the spot.
When patients heard how much more professional she sounded, they naturally chose her to treat them. In the beginning, some doctors who wouldn’t take it lying down tried to compete with her, to test their skills against hers. But eventually, whenever they saw her rush forward, everyone else would basically give up and go find patients she didn’t want."
Hearing this, Chenyang’s face filled with curiosity. "Without help from equipment, and without much experience, she could accurately diagnose the condition and lay out a treatment plan after just an initial examination?"
"Yes."
"That... that’s a bit too incredible, isn’t it? Even you or Liu Yun probably couldn’t do that, right?"
"The emergency department mostly receives patients with acute illnesses or people injured in accidents. The injured ones are easy to assess. You just treat the injury; it’s straightforward.
As for acute illnesses, most patients have a medical history, so you can figure out most of it just by asking some questions. For the small remainder who have no medical history and no external symptoms, that’s where you have to rely on pure knowledge."
"Knowledge?"
"You might not believe this, but that girl, Xiaoke, has practically stuffed every piece of medical knowledge from every current textbook into her brain. No matter what kind of theoretical knowledge it is, you can ask her one second, and she’ll give you a perfectly accurate answer the next."
"A super brain?" Chenyang said, stunned. "Calling her a ’genius’ probably isn’t enough. You’d have to call her a prodigy of the medical world, wouldn’t you?"
"That’s what we think, too. Of course, theory and practice are ultimately two different things. She can state the patient’s condition and outline a general treatment plan, but she’s still lacking when it comes to the detailed, practical procedures.
It’s because of these shortcomings that Liu Yun was able to reluctantly take her under her wing. Otherwise, with that girl’s personality, she probably would have kicked Liu Yun out and taken over as the director of the emergency department herself."
Chenyang grinned. "In terms of ability, you could call her a genius. In terms of personality, she’s a total spitfire."
"Nah, we all feel ’Master Extinction’ fits her better. In her very first month on the job, she nearly put the other ER doctors out of business. That’s more absolute than Master Extinction herself."
Director Liu paused for a moment before adding, "Geniuses all have big personalities, and they don’t bow their heads to just anyone. In the year she’s been at the hospital, she hasn’t shown a shred of respect for anyone—except Liu Yun.
At the same time, she sees Liu Yun as her mentor and her only superior. If anyone gets in the way of her learning from Liu Yun, she’ll make their life hell."
"So because my situation kept her from her studies with Liu Yun, that’s why she chewed me out on the way here?"

Director Liu gave a wry smile. "But the girl doesn’t have a bad bone in her body."
