Chapter 72: A Public Territorial Kiss to Keep the Vanguards Away
I stepped out of the hovercar into the dense, neon-soaked air of the lower commercial district and immediately understood why Gianna had warned me.
This was a strictly matriarchal street-level culture.
Squads of women in mixed civilian and light combat wear moved in loose groups, talking, laughing, scanning gear displays.
The moment my violet hair and yellow eyes caught the light, conversations paused. Heads turned. A few open stares lingered longer than politeness allowed.
Rare male supports were one thing. One who looked like me apparently ranked higher on the novelty scale.
I kept close to Gianna without needing to be told.
She noticed the attention, exhaled once through her nose, and hooked her fingers through mine again, firmer this time, deliberate.
The contact read as claim rather than affection to anyone watching.
Most of the people we passed seemed to recognize her. A few offered small nods. One or two gave me a longer evaluating look before deciding I was already spoken for.
We weren’t the only male-female grouping.
Every so often I spotted another support, always at the center of three or four women. Their postures were relaxed, practiced. A couple of them glanced in my direction, exchanged quiet comments with their partners, then looked away.
One woman with short-cropped hair and a partial guild patch on her jacket slowed as she passed us.
"Aren’t you lucky, Gia?" I said.
Gianna’s grip on my hand tightened a fraction.
"Hmm?"
The woman smiled, eyes flicking over me with open appraisal, then left.
"I mean, not only did you get a support, but someone who’s actually handsome enough. I was a little afraid after seeing Shen that most of them would look like girls. Guess he’s an exception."
Gia blinked.
"Does he look like a girl?"
I coughed once.
"More or less."
Gia scoffed.
"Don’t get ahead of yourself. There are handsome guys too."
"Is that so?"
I turned my head toward her, voice low enough that only she could hear.
"But do they kiss as I do? Like how I pinned you in the mirror and sucked your fingers?"
Gia’s cheeks turned pink.
"Speak properly. We’re in public."
She kept walking without paying attention to others.
We stopped at a street vendor selling overpriced holographic street food, glowing noodles that shifted color as they cooked, steam carrying scents that were half real spice and half engineered appetite trigger.
Gianna ordered for both of us without asking, paid with a wrist flick, and handed me noodles that tasted better than they had any right to.
We found a narrow ledge overlooking the lower concourse and ate in relative quiet.
After a while, she set the empty box aside and rested her elbows on her knees.
"You wanna know what my power is?"
I glanced at her.
"I do. I asked you more than once. You never even used it when we trained."
Gianna raised one hand, palm open.
On the small metal table beside us, a discarded spoon trembled, then lifted a few centimeters into the air. It hovered, spinning slowly, before she set it back down with precise control.
Oh.
"Holy shit. You’re telekinetic."
A small, real smile touched her mouth.
"Yes. I must train my mind to work properly. So now you know why I have to keep a certain distance sometimes. If my focus slips, things move. Including people I don’t intend to move."
"Oh. Are you apologizing?"
"No. Fuck off."
I reached out, caught her wrist, and pulled her a half-step closer on the ledge.
She didn’t resist.
"I never said you were annoying," I told her.
"I never thought your behavior was rude. I can see it in your eyes when you’re holding back."
Gianna looked at me for a long second. The red of her irises seemed darker under the neon.
Then she leaned in and kissed me, short, firm, deliberate.
When she pulled back, I raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, now you don’t care if the public sees?"
"I don’t care," she said.
"You’re my support."
I kissed her back, lighter than the first, just enough to feel her breath catch.
We stayed like that for a moment longer than necessary, the noise of the district washing around us.
When we finally stood, Gianna kept her fingers laced with mine and led us deeper into the neon.
The further we walked, the more the stares followed.
A pair of Vanguards in off-duty jackets openly tracked my hair color. Someone muttered the word "provisional" loud enough to carry.
Gianna’s jaw tightened once, then she made a decision.
Right beneath a massive curved advertisement plate that bathed the street in shifting blue and magenta light, she stopped.
She stepped fully into my space, reached up, and gripped the front of my overcoat collar.
The sunglasses still sat on her forehead. Her expression was calm, almost challenging.
"Public enough for you?" she asked quietly.
Before I could answer, she pulled me down and kissed me properly, deep, open-mouthed, unhurried.
There was nothing tentative in it.
One hand stayed fisted in my collar. The other settled against the side of my neck. The Pheromone Trace and the anchor of her own energy mixed in the small space between us until the rest of the street noise faded to a dull background hum.
I could hear the whispering of others.
But I didn’t care.
It’s the first time Gianna reacted like this.
And I liked it.
When she finally released me, her breathing was only slightly uneven.
Mine was worse.
A few people had slowed to watch. Gianna didn’t look at them. She simply adjusted my collar as if she had every right to, then took my hand again.
"Come on," she said.
"There’s a gear boutique two blocks down that doesn’t ask for guild affiliation. Try not to get us both arrested for public indecency before we reach it."
I let her pull me forward, the taste of her still on my mouth, the neon advertisement still glowing overhead, and the clear knowledge that whatever careful distance she had been maintaining was starting to erode in real time.
The city kept moving around us.
