Chapter 71: Stepping Out of Uniform for a 24-Hour Date
Today’s the day.
I woke up much earlier than I expected.
Maybe because I had actually slept this time, or maybe because the pressure behind my eyes had finally eased.
The space beside me was empty again.
Jenna was nowhere to be found, not in the kitchen, not in the hallway.
It had been almost a week since I appeared in this world, and the idea of spending an entire day on a date while other people were out there fighting monsters felt strangely calm.
I changed into a white shirt, black overcoat, and dark pants. I styled my hair properly and brushed my teeth three times before deciding it was as good as it was going to get.
"Hah... ha."
My teeth don’t smell.
I sniffed my collar.
It didn’t smell like anything special.
Good enough.
Breakfast was waiting on the counter, still warm. Jenna had prepared it before leaving.
She had been different last night, same care, same practical tone, but something in her eyes had shifted.
I couldn’t pin it down.
Jealousy because I was going out with Gia?
Or something else entirely?
Should I take her on a date too at some point?
Fuck.
Stop thinking and focus.
I took the strip of tablets she had given me, popped one as instructed, and slipped the remaining one into my pocket.
The bracelet on my wrist stayed quiet and green. The monitoring patch under my collarbone was still in place, but Jenna had cleared the schedule for the day.
Low output only. No experiments.
At exactly 10:00, the door chimed.
I opened it and actually stopped short.
Gianna’s hair was no longer in its usual ponytail.
It flowed freely over one shoulder, blue tips catching the hallway light.
Instead of training gear, she wore a casual crop top and dark pants that fit like they had been chosen with intent.
Black sunglasses rested on her forehead, pushed up out of the way.
She looked... different. Softer around the edges, but still unmistakably herself.
"Stop staring," she said, and the small cough that followed did nothing to hide the faint color rising in her cheeks.
I pulled her inside by the wrist and kissed her before either of us could overthink it.
Gianna froze for half a second, then hit my chest lightly with the side of her fist.
"Idiot. We haven’t even begun yet."
I smiled against her mouth before stepping back.
"Sorry. Got carried away. Where were you?"
"Nowhere. Came straight here."
She moved to my side and, without commentary, hooked her fingers through mine.
The contact was deliberate. I looked down at our joined hands, then up at her face.
She didn’t acknowledge the gesture beyond a slight tightening of her grip.
"Ready?" she asked.
"Yeah."
Her civilian hovercar waited in the private bay, sleek, dark, and far less formal than the guild vehicles.
She slid into the driver’s seat while I took the passenger side.
The cabin was smaller than I expected. The moment the doors sealed and the climate system kicked in, I felt the new passive stir.
[Pheromone Trace (Lv. 1) — Passive]
It was subtle.
A low, cooling comfort that filled the enclosed space without any visible glow or system flare.
Gianna started the engine and pulled us up into the traffic lanes, posture professional, eyes on the route.
For the first minute she gave nothing away. Then her grip on the control yoke loosened by a fraction.
She inhaled once, quietly, and her shoulders dropped a millimeter. She noticed me watching and immediately straightened.
"What are you doing?"
"Making you feel good."
The words left my mouth before I remembered how that might sound.
I added quickly, "Do you not like it?"
Gianna kept her eyes on the sky lanes.
"No. It’s fine."
A beat.
"It’s... comfortable. Whatever you’re doing, don’t ramp it up. We’re still in public airspace."
"Wasn’t planning to."
She glanced sideways at me, red eyes half-hidden by the angle of her sunglasses, then returned her attention to the traffic.
"You’re staring again."
"You’re dressed differently."
"It’s a date. People wear civilian clothes on dates."
"You didn’t know what a date was."
"I have my sources."
"I see. At least they are trustworthy."
The corner of her mouth twitched.
She didn’t let it become a full smile, but the attempt was there.
We descended toward the neon-drenched lower commercial districts.
The upper lanes gave way to denser traffic and brighter signage, specialized augmentation clinics with holographic muscle diagrams, rare combat-gear boutiques displaying kinetic shields and adaptive weave jackets, narrow storefronts selling everything from calibrated neural dampeners to custom Vanguard boots.
The air itself seemed to hum with low-level mana advertisements.
Gianna navigated without needing the guidance system.
"This sector used to be all black-market workshops before the Empresses standardized the zoning," she said.
"Now it’s mostly licensed. Still the best place to find gear that isn’t pure guild-issue."
"You come here often?"
"When I need something that doesn’t advertise Everheart on the collar."
She flicked a look at me.
"You’re going to get stared at. Try not to look like a provisional support on his first field trip."
"I’ll try to look like your boyfriend."
"Aim lower."
I laughed under my breath.
The sound felt easier than it had in days. The Pheromone Trace continued its quiet work.
Every few minutes, I caught Gianna’s breathing evening out, the tension in her shoulders easing before she consciously pulled it back.
We parked in a secure civilian bay two levels above a wide pedestrian concourse.
Gianna killed the engine and sat for a second longer than necessary, fingers still loose on the yoke.
"Rules for today," she said without looking at me.
"I’m listening."
"No high-output anything. No chains in public. No techniques. If your core even thinks about spiking, we abort and go straight back to the guild. Clear?"
"Clear."
"And stop looking at me like that."
"Like what?"
"Like you’re already planning the next time you’re going to grab my hand in front of strangers."
I raised both hands in mock surrender.
"Wouldn’t dream of it, Captain."
"I will leave you here."
"Yes, Gia."
She exhaled through her nose, pushed the sunglasses back down over her eyes, and opened her door.
"Come on. You wanted to see the city. Try not to embarrass me in the first ten minutes."
