Chapter 61: Accidentally Checking Out My Own Species
I let out a long breath and leaned against the wall.
"Date window stays open, then."
"It stays open," Mira confirmed.
"I’ll log the result for Jenna. Get water. Then rest. Your core is still running hot."
I nodded, accepted the water she passed me, and stood there until the worst of the tremor left my hands.
The training was going well.
There was still time to complete both the active quests.
Strangely, I was starting to get accustomed to this world, the constant low-level tension, the political undercurrents, the way every interaction carried weight.
A few women from the guild had tried to speak with me over the past days, but Jenna’s rule remained absolute: anyone who wanted direct access had to clear an S-rank evaluation first.
The protection felt overwhelming at times, but I understood the reason.
There were predators out there.
Rei had already proven that much.
I exited the sphere room in a better mood than I had entered it.
The clean hour-long loop meant the date with Gianna was finally locked in.
I was still turning that thought over when I stepped into the lab and saw Jenna sitting across from someone I had never met.
White hair that almost reached the shoulders. Green eyes that stood out sharply against pale skin. The same pale tone ran down the neck and arms, matching the hair so closely it looked deliberate.
There was visible muscle under the fitted training layer, not bulky, but defined in a way that immediately reminded me of the last person I had met with that kind of build.
I walked forward, still drinking from the bottle, very aware that I smelled of sweat and effort.
Some part of me hoped the newcomer found it appealing.
Wait.
Why did I want that in the first place?
Jenna looked up and smiled.
"I saw the results. You’ve been progressing very fast."
I nodded, then glanced at the stranger again. Too pretty. As pretty as Gianna in a completely different way, and the muscle only made the overall impression stranger.
Jenna had not mentioned anyone new.
She handed me a tablet with the session data.
I scanned it.
[Mana Redirection — Session Log]
Duration: 60:00
Fractures: 0
Micro-corrections: 2 (within threshold)
Efficiency gain: +4.2%
Projected Skill Progress: Approaching Lv. 2
Almost there.
Then the white-haired person spoke. The voice was lower than I expected, thicker, with a calm weight to it.
"Is he the new arrival?"
Jenna nodded but didn’t elaborate.
The stranger turned those green eyes on me fully.
"You’ve been the talk of the sector. I wanted to meet you ever since you came to the guild, but I’ve been busy."
I extended a hand on instinct.
"Hey. Nice to meet you."
"Yes. Indeed."
The handshake was firm.
"I’m so glad I finally get to have a partner to talk with."
I froze.
Partner.
I looked at Jenna, then back at the white-haired stranger.
"Oh. I’m sorry, but I already have a partner."
The green eyes blinked, faintly confused.
"I know. Gianna, right?"
"If you know, then why say that?"
"I have a partner too. Three of them."
Three?
Three guys?
What kind of girl is she?
Jenna’s voice cut in, dryly amused.
"Shen. Rev is probably confused by your appearance."
The white-haired person blinked once, then laughed, a short, genuine sound.
"Ah. That’s right."
Those green eyes met mine again, clearer now.
"Revien. My name is Shen Reinhard. I’m a support. Just like you."
I stared.
"You’re a dude?"
Shen’s mouth curved.
"Last time I checked."
The lab suddenly felt a lot smaller. Another male support. In the same guild building. Sitting across from Jenna like it was the most ordinary thing in the world.
I recovered enough to keep my voice level.
"I haven’t met another one since I arrived."
"Most people haven’t," Shen replied easily.
"There aren’t many of us walking around freely. Jenna’s been keeping you insulated on purpose. Smart of her."
Jenna leaned back in her chair, watching the exchange with the same calm attention she gave to ranking reports.
"Shen requested a meeting once your redirection metrics stabilized. I decided today was acceptable."
"Requested," I repeated.
Shen shrugged. The movement made the white hair shift across one shoulder.
"Word travels when a provisional support triggers a permanent core expansion on a Lawless Vanguard with a single skill. I was curious. And I have information you don’t."
"What kind of information?"
"The kind that keeps people like us from ending up in locked facilities or private collections."
Shen’s green eyes were steady.
"You’re strong, but you’re still new. The sector is already moving pieces around you. Rei Lawless is only the most obvious one."
I glanced at Jenna. Her expression confirmed she had already weighed this conversation before allowing it.
"Why help me?"
Shen’s smile thinned slightly.
"Because the last time a support with your growth pattern appeared, three different guilds tried to carve him up between them. He didn’t survive the year. I prefer not to watch the same thing happen twice."
The air in the lab changed.
Jenna spoke quietly.
"Shen has three bonded partners and full clearance across two cities. He’s one of the few independent supports who never signed exclusive contracts. That independence is expensive to maintain. He’s risking some of it by sitting here."
I looked at Shen again, the pale features, the muscle, the calm green eyes that no longer looked decorative.
"And in exchange?"
"Conversation," Shen said.
"Honesty about what your class is actually doing to you. And eventually, a demonstration. Nothing more for now."
Mira’s voice came from the doorway behind me.
"His core is still running hot from the hour loop. If you’re going to push questions, do it after he cools down."
Shen inclined his head slightly.
"It’s fine. No need to rush"
He stood. The height difference was smaller than I expected, but the presence was not.
Up close, the masculine structure of his face was clearer, something the long white hair and pale coloring had softened at a distance.
"I’ll be in the city for the next several days," Shen said.
"When you’re ready to talk without an audience, Jenna knows how to reach me."
He paused at the door and glanced back once.
"Be careful when you are in public."
