Chapter 62: Swapping Digital Digits and Putting On a Magical Dog Collar
The door slid shut behind him. Silence settled over the lab.
I turned to Jenna.
"You could have warned me."
"I wanted your unfiltered reaction," she said.
"You didn’t."
Mira was already pulling new readings on her tablet, expression tight.
"His signature is still interacting with yours," she muttered.
"That’s not normal for a first meeting."
I looked down at my own hands. The faint heat from the redirection loop hadn’t fully faded.
Underneath it, something else had stirred, a quiet, instinctive recognition that felt entirely too similar to the way the system responded to high-compatibility targets.
Another male support.
Three bonded partners.
And a warning about the voice that had already spoken through me once in the dark.
I met Jenna’s eyes.
"How dangerous is he?"
"Shen’s a great support," Jenna answered without hesitation.
"S-rank potential. He’s three years older than you and occasionally visits the academy to guide new students. Stable record. No major incidents. He maintains independence by keeping his contracts limited and his partners carefully chosen."
"Is he promiscuous?"
"Every male is promiscuous. Shen knew how to keep himself in check."
I sat in the chair beside her, still turning the encounter over in my head.
"Don’t tell me the men remaining in this world get some strange sensation of pulling toward each other."
Jenna actually laughed, a short, genuine sound.
"That’s not how it works. What you felt was your core reacting. Male cores are larger and denser than what most women carry. They’re built to loan power, recharge, and boost. When one recognizes a similar high-capacity core nearby, the body registers it and starts processing the information. It’s recognition, not attraction."
I nodded slowly, filing that away.
"I’ve wanted to ask for a long time. How do other supports actually work? There isn’t much clear footage online. I use the chains, but that’s mostly improvisation on my part."
Not including the kiss.
Jenna leaned back, considering how to explain it cleanly.
"Most standard supports operate through direct mana tethering," she said.
"The common method is a contact-based link, hand on the shoulder, palm against the back, sometimes a short-range projected thread if the support has the right affinity. Once the link is active, they push a steady stream of refined mana into the Vanguard’s core. It raises output, accelerates recovery, and can temporarily expand skill ceilings."
She tapped a finger against her chair arm.
"The better ones can split the mana across two or three partners at once, but the efficiency drops with each additional link. High-end supports like Shen can maintain multiple stable channels without much loss because their cores are large enough to handle the division. Average supports burn out faster and need longer recovery windows between deployments."
"And the intimate side?"
"Sex increases circulation and compatibility," Jenna said plainly.
"Physical intimacy lowers resistance between cores. The mana flows cleaner, the temporary boosts last longer, and repeated pairing can create a semi-permanent resonance that makes future transfers more efficient. That’s why bonded partners are valued. It’s not only politics or preference. It’s measurable performance."
I nodded, then felt heat rise to my face before I could stop it.
Jenna noticed immediately.
"What is it?"
"You see... can I get a phone?"
There was a brief pause. Then Jenna laughed again, softer this time.
"Mira. Get one from storage."
Mira looked up from her tablet, expression unreadable, and disappeared into the side room.
She returned a minute later with a slim device and something else: a plain metal bracelet, its screen completely blank, almost like a watch.
Jenna took the bracelet and held it out.
"Try this first. Standard issue for registered male supports under guild protection. It monitors core output, flags instability, and gives you a private channel to the guild network."
I took it. The metal was cool against my fingers. The moment I brought it near my wrist, the band flexed on its own, locked into place with a soft click, and the blank screen flickered to life.
[Male Detected]
[Accessing Biological Information...]
[Core Signature: Confirmed]
[Class Designation: Unknown — Provisional Clearance]
[Host Detected: Revien]
[Baseline Output Mapping in Progress...]
A pulse ran through the band as it synchronized.
[Synchronization Complete]
[Current Core Status: Stable — Heat 18%]
[Mana Redirection Efficiency: 71%]
[Partner Mapping: Active (Basic)]
[Warning Thresholds: Standard Guild Protocol]
[Private Channel: Everheart Guild - Encrypted]
I turned my wrist, watching the small display settle into a clean interface. Core temperature, output graph, a muted alert line that stayed green.
"It will tighten if your output spikes beyond safe parameters," Jenna said.
"It can also send a priority signal to Mira or me if something starts overriding your control for more than a few seconds. Think of it as a leash you agreed to wear."
"Comforting."
"It’s protection," she corrected.
"For you and for everyone around you."
Mira handed me the phone next. It powered on with a simple setup screen already linked to the guild network.
No public number yet, internal only until Jenna cleared broader access.
I exhaled and leaned back in the chair.
"So standard supports feed mana through contact or short tethers. Intimacy makes the connection cleaner and longer-lasting. And my chains are... nonstandard."
"Highly nonstandard," Jenna agreed.
"Most supports can’t form solid constructs or share sensory input the way you do. Your class is improvising tools that others simply don’t have. That’s part of why Shen was curious. And part of why Rei is already circling."
I flexed my wrist once more. The bracelet stayed quiet, the green status line steady.
"One more question."
"Go on."
"If male cores recognize each other... does that mean Shen can feel the same thing I did?"
Jenna’s expression didn’t change, but something thoughtful moved behind her eyes.
"Almost certainly. Whether he decides that recognition is useful, threatening, or irrelevant is a different matter. Shen survives by reading those distinctions carefully. You should do the same."
Mira spoke without looking up from her updated readings.
"His signature is already fading on your end. Slow, but clean. No aggressive latch. That’s a good sign."
It’s not like I was scared of him. But it’s good to be wary.
"Can I get Gia’s number?"
