Chapter 59: Demanding Normalcy in a Controlled Environment
That stings.
"...Sorry. I don’t know what’s up with me today."
Gianna’s voice had lost some of its earlier edge. She looked away for a second, jaw tight, as if the admission itself irritated her.
"No worries," I said.
"I’m glad you’re taking it out on me. Not the hurtful words — the feelings."
Silence stretched between us for a few seconds. The training room felt smaller than it had a moment ago.
She pointed at me with the water bottle.
"And Rev."
"Yeah?"
"If you try that hand thing again, I will follow through on the earlier threat."
I raised both hands in surrender.
"Understood."
"Good."
She shook her head once, gathered her gear, and headed for the door.
"You’re leaving?"
At the threshold, she paused without looking back.
"Yes."
I closed the distance before she could step through. My voice came out quieter than I expected.
"Kiss me."
Gianna turned her head. Red eyes met mine, searching.
"Desperate, aren’t you?"
I didn’t answer. My attention had already dropped to her mouth.
She let out a short breath.
"You’re making this hard."
"I want this to be hard," I said.
"I know I’m going to have other women beside you. I know my body reacts in ways that go against what I actually want. But let me tell you something, Gia."
I kept my voice steady even though my pulse wasn’t.
"I want you. I want you in a way that has nothing to do with the system or my powers. Yes, we barely met two days ago. I don’t know if what I’m feeling is love or just the beginning of something that could become that. But the moment I kissed you, I wanted more of it. I wanted it to feel normal between us. No more asking permission every time. No more acting like we’re strangers who happen to share a training mat."
Her expression didn’t soften, but it changed. The usual defensive sharpness was still there, yet something underneath it had gone still.
"Get jealous all you want," I continued.
"Hate me for the situation. Say whatever you need to say. Just know that none of this is fake. Nothing I’ve done is meant to hurt you or anyone else. I’m trying to stay myself in a class that’s designed to turn me into something else. And when I’m around you, that feels possible."
Gianna stared at me for a long moment. The water bottle hung forgotten in her hand. I could see her weighing the words, looking for the angle, the manipulation, the system-driven line.
She didn’t find one clean enough to dismiss.
"You’re an idiot," she said finally.
"Probably."
"You’re also dangerous. And complicated. And the worst possible person for me to get involved with."
"I know."
She stepped back into the room and let the door seal again behind her. The soft hydraulic sound felt louder than usual.
"I watched you kiss her," Gianna said.
"I watched the way she looked at you afterward. I watched my mother handle the political fallout like it was just another scheduling problem. And through all of it, I kept telling myself it was fine because we are only training partners."
"And now?"
"Now you’re standing here telling me you want normal."
She let out a short, humorless breath.
"There is no normal with you, Rev. There’s power, and politics, and a class that makes people want to own you. There’s Rei already counting the days. There’s my mother calculating risk. And there’s me, standing in a training room, listening to you say you want me without the system’s permission."
I didn’t move closer.
I waited.
Gianna set the water bottle down on the bench with deliberate care.
"I don’t trust easy feelings," she said.
"Especially not ones that appear in two days. Especially not with someone whose power is built on intimacy. But I’m also not going to stand here and pretend that kiss meant nothing to me either."
She closed the remaining distance herself.
"This still doesn’t make us anything official," she said, voice low.
"It doesn’t cancel the risks. It doesn’t stop the other women who are going to come after what you can give them. And it doesn’t mean I’m suddenly fine with any of it."
"I wasn’t asking for fine."
"What were you asking for, then?"
"Honesty. And this."
I didn’t have to move first this time.
Gianna reached up, gripped the front of my training shirt, and pulled me down into a kiss that was nothing like the careful, testing one from the apartment.
This one was rough from the start, teeth, heat, the sharp edge of someone who had been holding tension for too long and had finally decided to stop pretending it wasn’t there.
My hands found her waist.
She backed me into the wall beside the door hard enough that my shoulders hit the reinforced panel.
The kiss deepened, messy and urgent. I could taste the adrenaline from training and something sharper underneath it, frustration, want, the reluctant acceptance that whatever this was, it had already moved past the point of easy denial.
When she finally broke the kiss, both of us were breathing harder than we had during the spar.
Gianna’s forehead rested against mine for a second. Her fingers were still twisted in my shirt.
"You’re going to make this complicated," she muttered.
"It already is."
"I know."
She pulled back just enough to look at me. The flush across her cheeks hadn’t faded.
"Three or four days. After Mira’s block. We go to the drive-in. You keep your output clean until then. And if Rei shows up early and tries anything, you do not handle it alone. You call me."
"Agreed."
Gianna released my shirt and stepped back, smoothing her expression into something closer to her usual control.
It didn’t fully land. The heat in her eyes was still too close to the surface.
"Same time tomorrow," she said.
"Don’t be late."
She opened the door, paused once more, and added without looking at me:
"And Revi... the next time you decide to say something like that, give me warning first. I’m not good at reacting in the moment."
Then she left.
I stayed against the wall for a while after the door sealed, the taste of her still on my mouth, the system uncharacteristically quiet, and the clear knowledge that the line between "training" and everything else had just gotten thinner than either of us had planned for.
Three or four days.
A date.
