Chapter 58: Failing a Simple Hand-Holding Sub-Quest
I nodded.
Then I followed her out.
The drive to the training hall was quiet, the way most of our early mornings had been.
No unnecessary conversation. Just the low hum of the hover vehicle and the city moving past the windows.
We reached the guild basement; she registered the private room, and the reinforced door sealed behind us with a soft hydraulic hiss.
Before we could start, a blue screen flashed directly in front of my vision.
[Sub-Quest Triggered: The Hand-Holding Compromise]
Objective: Conclude the spar by successfully trapping her hand in a locked-fingers grip for ten seconds without her immediately threatening to punch you in the balls.
System Prompt: She corrected "being" to "training."
Re-establish the domestic boundaries by turning a standard combat wrist-lock into an intimate palm synchronization.
Rewards: 1x Bronze Roulette Ticket, +5 Gianna Favorability.
Penalty for Failure: This session’s favorability progress is discarded. The Host’s control over unscripted vocalization decreases by a marginal, untracked amount.
Time Limit: 5 Days
Now?
Of all times?
Gianna was already stretching her shoulders near the center of the mat when she noticed I hadn’t moved.
"What are you looking at?"
I dismissed the window and met her eyes.
"Do you want to hold hands?"
"Fuck off."
I smiled despite myself and stepped onto the mat.
"Partner Mapping drill," I said.
"Mira’s parameters. Low output. I read the flow. You try to break my timing."
Gianna’s red eyes narrowed slightly, but she nodded and dropped into a ready stance. No chains. No weapons. Just footwork, leverage, and the new micro-adjustment I had picked up the night before with Jenna.
We started slow.
I kept the redirection loop tight and focused on the sensation the system had labeled Partner Mapping, the faint ability to feel where her mana sat open and where it resisted.
Gianna came in with a clean right jab. I slipped it, caught her wrist, and tried to read the tension running up her forearm.
She twisted out of the hold harder than necessary and nearly clipped my jaw with the follow-up elbow.
Bam.
"Too slow," she said.
"You’re heavier on the exits today."
"Then adapt."
We reset.
The second exchange was faster.
She pressed me with a combination that forced me backward across the mat.
I caught her lead wrist again, this time applying the mapping more deliberately, searching for the moment her weight shifted.
For a fraction of a second I felt it, the exact point where her guard was committed, and used it to turn her momentum past me.
Gianna clicked her tongue and disengaged.
"You’re actually reading it."
"That’s the point of the drill."
"Don’t get comfortable."
She came in harder the third time.
The jealousy she wasn’t naming sat in the sharpness of her movements.
Every time I got close to a clean control, she broke it with extra force, as if punishing the idea that someone else had already received a high-output transfer from me.
I didn’t call it out. I wasn’t sure she even realized how obvious it was.
[Partner Mapping: Efficiency 11% → 23%]
[Mana Redirection Loop: Stable under moderate stress]
"You’re leaking irritation," I said as I blocked a low kick and stepped inside her guard.
"I’m not irritated."
"You’re overcommitting on the counters."
"And you’re talking too much."
She hooked my ankle and nearly put me on the floor. I recovered, caught her wrist a third time, and this time held the mapping long enough to feel the pulse of her mana stutter when I refused to let go immediately.
Gianna’s eyes locked on mine.
"Release."
My fingers slid between hers, locking our palms together in a deliberate grip.
Not a combat hold. Something closer. More personal.
Gianna’s eyes snapped to mine.
She didn’t pull away immediately.
For a few seconds she just stared at me, red eyes sharp, the tension in her hand clear. I could feel the instinct to break contact running through her, along with something else underneath it, a thin, reluctant familiarity left over from the night before.
One second. Two. Three. Four.
On the fifth, she shoved me back hard enough that I had to take a step to keep my balance.
A faint flush had risen across her cheeks.
"We kissed," she spat.
"What is this hand-holding shit?"
I raised both hands, palms open.
"Testing a theory."
"Test it on someone else."
She flexed her fingers once, as if erasing the sensation, and reset her stance.
"We’re here to train, not whatever that was."
"Understood."
We reset.
The next several exchanges were cleaner, but the edge in her movements hadn’t fully disappeared.
She remained sharper than usual, still carrying whatever she had felt while watching the simulation footage.
I kept the Partner Mapping active, learning the difference between her feints and her real weight shifts.
Each time I successfully predicted an angle, the efficiency number ticked upward in the corner of my vision.
[Partner Mapping: 61%]
[Redirection Loop: Holding under elevated heart rate]
After a particularly close clinch, she shoved me back again and wiped sweat from her forehead with the back of her wrist.
"You’re improving faster than the logs predicted."
"Is that a compliment?"
"It’s an observation."
She circled me slowly.
"Don’t let it make you careless. Rei will come in looking for exactly this kind of opening."
"Stop talking about her."
"Don’t act like you don’t like it."
"I don’t."
"Don’t you?"
Gianna stopped.
"Because the version of you that kissed her under pressure and the version of you running this drill are not the same person. One of them asks permission. The other one makes decisions first and justifies them later."
I didn’t argue.
She was right.
We continued for another twenty minutes. No chains. No high output. Just footwork, leverage, and the steady practice of reading her flow without forcing anything.
By the time she called the session, both of us were breathing harder, and the mapping efficiency had climbed into the low seventies.
Gianna grabbed her water bottle and drank in silence for a moment. Then she glanced at me over the rim.
"You’re thinking about something else."
"The date."
She lowered the bottle.
"What about it?"
"Before the week is up. Before Rei starts pushing official sessions. Drive-in. No crowds. No guild politics. Just what we already agreed on."
Gianna was quiet for a few seconds, capping the bottle with deliberate care.
"You’re using a training session to schedule personal time."
"I’m using the only window where you’re not actively trying to put me on the floor."
A faint, reluctant almost-smile touched the corner of her mouth before she suppressed it.
"Fine. After the next redirection block with Mira. You clear that without an output spike, we go. You spike, we cancel, and you spend the evening running drills until your arms fall off."
"When?"
"In three days. Or four. Or five. Depends on my mood."
"You’re taking me for granted."
"I will. Because I’m the emotionally invested one. Not you. I control my feelings, unlike you."
Huh?
