Chapter 57: Reviewing the Playback of a Foreign Kiss
I don’t remember how I fell asleep again.
That’s the second time this has happened.
I opened my eyes to morning light pressing against the curtains and a space beside me on the bed.
Jenna was nowhere to be seen, not in the bedroom, not in the hallway, not in the kitchen where she usually moved around with quiet efficiency while the coffee finished brewing.
Guess she really was disappointed after all.
I sat up slowly, rubbed my face, and walked to the bathroom.
The mirror showed the same violet hair, the same yellow eyes, the same face I still hadn’t fully accepted as mine. I braced my hands on the sink and stared at the reflection.
Who is this guy, actually?
"System."
[Yes?]
"Last night. When I spoke to Jenna. That wasn’t me."
[Correct. A residual expression of the Succubus core surfaced briefly during lowered conscious control.]
"She said she’s heard it a few times before. Do I talk in my sleep?"
[Minor vocalizations have been logged during deep rest cycles. Full articulation is rare and currently tied to moments of emotional vulnerability combined with physical proximity to a high-compatibility target.]
I let out a long breath and splashed cold water on my face.
This was all so much scarier than I had expected.
I had woken up in a world full of women with a power built around intimacy and somehow convinced myself the biggest problems would be jealousy and awkward mornings.
Instead, I was dealing with a part of myself that could surface without permission and speak in a voice that didn’t feel like mine.
My body could move and talk without my full control.
That single fact sat heavier than any level-up notification.
I got ready in silence, pulled on training clothes, and walked out to the kitchen. Breakfast was waiting, simple, still warm, clearly prepared before she left.
The quiet consideration in the gesture made the earlier assumption feel a little childish.
Disappointed or not, Jenna hadn’t left me to fend for myself.
I ate.
A few minutes after I finished, the front door opened.
Gianna stepped inside. No training jacket thrown over one shoulder, no immediate sarcasm.
She wore practical gear and an expression that was calmer than usual, more focused. She closed the door behind her and looked at me for a second before speaking.
"You’re up."
"Yeah."
"My mother left early. Sector meeting. She said not to wait."
I nodded. That explained the empty apartment.
Gianna walked further in, set a small data slate on the counter, and leaned against it with her arms loosely crossed.
"We need to talk properly," she said. "No jokes. No sparring talk. Just development."
"Alright."
She studied me for a moment, red eyes steady.
"Your control inside the simulation was better than the first training logs. The redirection loop held even when you forced a high-output transfer. That’s progress. But the mutation you triggered on Rei is going to create problems we can’t ignore."
"I know."
"Do you?" Gianna’s voice stayed even.
"Because people are already asking questions. Not publicly yet, but inside the guild. A provisional support producing a permanent core expansion with a single skill use is the kind of result that makes ranking boards and family heads start making plans. Rei is only the first one who decided to be direct about it."
I leaned back against the opposite counter.
"Your mother is handling the political side."
"She is. That doesn’t mean you get to stay passive."
Gianna tapped the data slate once.
"You need a clearer training structure. Combat application of the chains, tighter output thresholds, and a hard rule about when high-intensity transfers are allowed. If you keep reacting in the moment the way you did with Rei, someone is eventually going to get permanently damaged. Or worse."
"I’m working on it."
"Work faster."
There was no heat in the words, only urgency.
"The academy evaluations aren’t going to care that you’re still figuring yourself out. They will measure results. And every ambitious Vanguard who hears about that mutation is going to want to test whether you can repeat it."
I was quiet for a few seconds.
"You’re treating this like I’m a strategic asset."
"You are one."
Gianna met my eyes without flinching.
"That doesn’t mean I like it. It means I’m not going to pretend the situation is simpler than it is. You have a class that creates dependency and growth through intimacy. The safer you become with it, the more valuable you are. The more valuable you are, the more people will try to control the access."
She paused, then added more quietly:
"Including people I actually respect."
The implication sat between us. Rei. Possibly others later.
I nodded slowly.
"What do you want me to do differently?"
"Three things."
Gianna held up a finger.
"One: no high-output skills on anyone without a clear medical or combat emergency. Two: you continue daily redirection drills with Mira’s parameters until the loop is automatic even under stress. Three: when the joint sessions with Rei start, you do not let her dictate the terms. We set the distance, the monitoring, and the limits. You follow them."
"Understood."
She watched me for another moment, as if checking whether I meant it. Whatever she saw seemed to satisfy her enough to continue.
"There’s one more thing."
"What?"
Gianna’s expression didn’t change, but something in her posture shifted slightly.
"I watched the simulation video."
The words landed cleanly. No accusation. No raised voice. Just a statement of fact that carried more weight than volume ever could.
I held her gaze.
"All of it?"
"Enough."
She uncrossed her arms and rested her hands on the edge of the counter.
"I saw the moment you decided to use the kiss. I saw her reaction afterward. I saw the way you looked at her when she walked out of the observation floor. I’m not going to pretend it was simple teamwork and nothing else."
"It wasn’t simple," I admitted. "But it also wasn’t what happened with you."
Gianna was silent for a few seconds. Then she gave a small, humorless breath.
"I’m not asking you to rank us. I’m telling you that I watched it, so you don’t have to wonder whether I’m operating on incomplete information. I know what the skill looks like when you use it under pressure. I know what it did to her. And I know you’re still carrying the effects."
She pushed off the counter and straightened.
"We train today. Controlled. No chains unless I say so. No output spikes. I want to see how stable you actually are when no one is bleeding out in front of you."
"Yes."
Gianna turned toward the door, then stopped with her hand on the frame.
"One last thing, Revi."
"Yeah?"
"I’m willing to work with the part of you that still asks permission. I’m less interested in the part that doesn’t."
