Chapter 56: Encountering the Phantom Voice in the Dark
Jenna leaned in and pressed one last, brief kiss to the corner of my mouth.
"Now go shower. You’re running hot."
Both of them went to bed.
She wasn’t disappointed.
If anything, she was glad he had been brave enough to voice his thoughts instead of simply taking what was offered.
Most supports in his position would have accepted the invitation without hesitation. The fact that he hadn’t made him more dangerous in some ways and more valuable in others.
His arm wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her close as they lay in the dark. The city lights filtered weakly through the curtains, enough to outline the shape of his hand against her stomach. The contact was warm. Steady.
This isn’t intimacy, she told herself.
She doesn’t get to fall in love with a boy her daughter’s age. More importantly, she still wasn’t certain whether the pull she felt toward him was real or simply the natural response to a high-output support whose class was designed to create attachment.
"Are you angry?" Revien’s voice came quietly in the dark.
"No."
"You can be if you want. I know I was supposed to be some miracle boy who gets to sleep with everyone and power you up. I understand the role. But I’m afraid that once I start doing that, I won’t be myself anymore."
Jenna turned in his arms so she could see his face. The yellow eyes were still open, watching her in the low light.
"Tell me what you’re afraid of."
"I’m afraid of losing my feelings," he said.
"Afraid of becoming a person I would despise. Afraid of hurting you or the people I care about."
She remained quiet, letting him continue.
"I know it sounds stupid," Revien went on.
"But I really want to keep my morals intact until I figure out how to control this power properly."
"And do you think there’s enough time for that?"
"I don’t know. I heard on the first day that dungeon activity is increasing."
"They are," Jenna answered.
"But as I told you before, no one expected a miracle in the first place. You are an anomaly that I chose to take responsibility for. That choice still stands."
Revien moved first this time.
He leaned in and kissed her.
It was slower than the earlier exchange on the sofa, less driven by heat and more by something quieter.
Jenna felt the familiar rise of his mana against her own, the careful way he kept the redirection loop active instead of dumping everything at once.
She responded, kissing him back, one hand resting against the side of his neck.
A system window only she could see flickered at the edge of her vision.
[Jenna Everheart – Status]
[Level: 147]
She noted it calmly. The prolonged contact on the sofa earlier had given her a single level.
This kiss, controlled and deliberate, produced nothing measurable. The difference confirmed what she had already begun to suspect.
There was a clear limit to how much he could raise someone through these partial methods.
The thought should have frustrated her.
Instead, it settled into the same pragmatic place where she kept most difficult truths. Full bonding remained the threshold.
Full bonding remained the threshold. Whatever waited beyond it could change everything.
Everything else was preparation.
Revien’s hand tightened slightly on her waist. For a moment the quality of his presence shifted.
The careful restraint thinned, and something older and hungrier rose underneath it.
When he spoke next, the voice was still his, but the tone was not.
"You taste like someone who has been starving herself for years," he murmured against her mouth, low and almost amused.
"All that power, all that control, and you still open so easily when someone finally pushes."
Jenna’s eyes opened.
The words were wrong. Not in content. The observation was uncomfortably accurate, but in the way they were delivered. There was no hesitation in them. No remnant of the man who had just admitted he was afraid of losing himself.
Then the moment passed.
Revien pulled back slightly, blinking once as if he had only just heard himself. The yellow eyes looked unsettled.
That was weird.
"...Sorry," he said, voice normal again.
"That wasn’t—"
"I know," Jenna interrupted quietly.
"I didn’t want to say that."
"I’ve seen fragments of it before. The class speaks when your control slips, even a little."
She did not move away from him. Her hand remained against his neck.
"That is the part you are actually afraid of," she said.
"Not the sex. Not the politics. The possibility that the voice becomes the default."
Revien didn’t deny it.
"Yes."
Jenna studied him in the dark for several seconds.
"Then we treat it like any other high-risk ability," she said.
"We map the triggers. We build tolerance. We do not pretend it isn’t there, and we do not give it unsupervised access to people who can’t survive it."
"Including you?"
"Especially me." A faint, dry note entered her voice.
"I’m useful to you alive and intact. Remember that when the voice starts offering simpler solutions."
He let out a breath that was almost a laugh and rested his forehead against hers.
"You’re taking this more calmly than I expected."
"I have spent years managing unstable assets and ambitious Vanguards," Jenna replied.
"A support who is afraid of his own power is still preferable to one who is not. Fear keeps people careful. Arrogance gets them killed."
They lay in silence for a while after that. His arm remained around her. Her hand stayed loosely against his neck. The city continued its low, constant hum beyond the windows.
Jenna allowed herself one private, inconvenient thought:
The feelings might be real.
She dismissed it just as quickly.
Real or not, they were secondary. Her responsibility was to keep him functional, keep her daughter safe, and prevent Sector 7 from tearing itself apart over a single high-output anomaly.
Attachment could wait. Or it could be managed the same way she managed everything else, with clear limits and no illusions.
"Sleep," she said eventually.
"Tomorrow we review the full simulation data, and I start preparing the paperwork to keep Rei Lawless at a controlled distance for as long as possible."
Revien’s voice was already heavier with exhaustion.
"And me?"
"You made a choice. I will hold you to it. In return, you will continue the controlled exchanges and the redirection drills. When the time comes, you will be ready for my daughter, or you will tell me honestly that you are not."
"Understood."
She felt him settle more heavily against her back once she turned again. His breathing slowly evened out.
