The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 52: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead

The schedule stayed on the whiteboard long after everyone else had stopped looking at it.

GROUP A

San Isidro High School

Lal-lo National High School

Maddela National High School

Aparri National High School

And underneath them—

FIRST MATCH: SAN ISIDRO VS. MADDELA

Kai sat on the edge of the bench, elbows resting on his knees.

The afternoon heat had settled over the training ground. Even under the shade, the air felt thick. Somewhere behind the field, a whistle blew from another sports venue, followed by a burst of cheering.

He could still see Maddela's name in his head.

Their first opponent.

Not someday.

Not later.

First.

Rafael dropped onto the bench beside him.

"You've been staring at that board for five minutes."

Kai glanced at him.

"Have I?"

"Yes."

Rafael leaned forward.

"I counted."

Kai smiled.

"You need better hobbies."

"I have hobbies."

"Like?"

"Counting how long you stare at things."

Kai laughed under his breath.

Before Rafael could say anything else, Coach Ramirez walked toward them carrying a folder.

The smile disappeared from Rafael's face.

"Uh-oh."

Coach stopped in front of the team.

"Meeting room."

Rafael looked at Kai.

"See?"

Kai stood.

"You did this to yourself."

"I didn't do anything."

"You talked."

"That's not illegal."

"Depends on Coach."

Rafael sighed.

"Fair."

---

The room assigned to the football team was small.

A whiteboard covered most of one wall.

There were several plastic chairs, a long table, and a projector that took Leo almost five minutes to make work.

When the screen finally lit up, the players settled down.

Coach Ramirez placed the folder on the table.

"Nobody is here to scare you."

He paused.

"But nobody is here to make you comfortable either."

Rafael leaned back.

Miguel sat forward.

Kai kept his eyes on the screen.

Coach clicked the remote.

The first image appeared.

MADDELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Below the name was a short list of their recent results.

Kai read the numbers.

Then another slide appeared.

A few photographs.

The Maddela players warming up.

Their midfielders passing.

Their defenders forming a line.

Their goalkeeper standing near the penalty area.

Kai studied the pictures.

They didn't look extraordinary.

That was probably the point.

A team didn't need to look dangerous in a photograph to cause problems on a football field.

Leo began the analysis.

"Maddela plays compact."

He circled their midfield.

"They don't like leaving large spaces between these lines."

Another image appeared.

A defensive shape.

"Notice this."

Kai leaned closer.

The four defenders were close together.

The midfielders were only a few meters ahead of them.

Leo continued.

"If you attack through the middle without moving them first, you're going to run into bodies."

Rafael raised his hand.

"So... don't attack through the middle."

Leo looked at him.

"Not exactly."

Rafael lowered his hand.

"Okay."

"Move them first."

Leo pointed at the screen.

"Make them shift. Then attack the space they leave."

Kai understood.

It sounded simple.

But simple things became difficult when eleven players were moving at full speed.

Coach Ramirez changed the slide.

A short clip started playing.

Maddela in possession.

Their left midfielder received the ball.

One touch.

Two.

Then a pass toward the wing.

The winger moved forward.

The defense followed.

The clip stopped.

Ramirez paused it.

"Look."

He pointed toward the opposite side.

A large space had appeared.

Kai saw it immediately.

"They switch late."

Coach looked at him.

"Exactly."

Kai felt a small spark of excitement.

This was different from simply watching football.

They were looking for weaknesses.

Patterns.

Habits.

Mistakes that might appear again.

Coach restarted the clip.

The sequence continued.

Maddela's winger crossed.

The striker missed.

The video ended.

Ramirez turned off the projector.

"That's one thing."

He faced the players.

"Don't expect them to make the same mistake because you saw it once."

Miguel nodded.

"They'll adjust."

"Good."

Ramirez looked around.

"That's why we need our own plan."

---

Leo moved toward the whiteboard.

He drew two lines.

Then another.

"Defensively, we stay narrow."

He wrote three names underneath.

"Miguel."

Miguel looked up.

"Rafael."

Rafael pointed at himself.

"Me?"

"And Kai."

Kai straightened.

Leo continued.

"Miguel controls the center."

He tapped the board.

"Rafael, when we lose the ball, you recover inside first. Don't chase the full-back immediately."

Rafael frowned.

"But if he gets forward—"

"Let him."

Rafael stopped.

Leo looked at him.

"The dangerous space is here."

He pointed toward the middle.

"If you leave it to chase someone near the line, they can play through us."

Rafael nodded slowly.

"Got it."

Leo turned to Kai.

"And you."

Kai waited.

"When we defend, don't stay too high."

Kai glanced at the board.

"So I drop?"

"Not all the way."

Leo drew another arrow.

"Stay close enough to the midfield that you can help, but far enough that you're ready when we win the ball."

Kai understood.

He would have to balance both sides.

Defend.

Then attack.

The thought made his stomach tighten.

Not because he was afraid.

Because there would be almost no time to think once the match started.

He would have to recognize the moment.

---

Coach Ramirez took over.

"When we have the ball, we don't force it."

He looked directly at the players.

"If the pass isn't there, don't invent one."

Rafael raised his eyebrows.

"Coach, that's directed at me."

Ramirez didn't smile.

"Good."

The room broke into quiet laughter.

Even Miguel couldn't hide his grin.

Rafael placed a hand over his chest.

"I feel targeted."

"You should."

Kai laughed.

Coach waited until the room settled again.

"Possession isn't about passing for the sake of passing."

He tapped the table.

"It's about moving them."

That word again.

Moving them.

Kai thought about the final back home.

The space that had appeared when San Pedro pushed too many players forward.

The moment he had waited instead of rushing.

He had learned that patience could create opportunities.

Now he had to prove he could use it against a completely different opponent.

---

The next part of the meeting was player assignments.

Coach Ramirez wrote the starting lineup on the board.

Goalkeeper — Enzo

Right Back — Jared

Center Back — Carlo

Center Back — Nico

Left Back — Adrian

Central Midfield — Miguel

Central Midfield — Leo Jr.

Right Wing — Kai

Left Wing — Rafael

Attacking Midfield — Tomas

Striker — Marco

Kai stared at the board.

Right wing.

He had played there before, but the responsibility felt different now.

Coach pointed toward him.

"Kai."

"Yes, Coach?"

"You'll have freedom when we attack."

Kai waited.

"But not when we defend."

He nodded.

"Understood."

"Your first job is to stretch their back line."

Kai looked at the diagram.

"If their left-back follows me?"

"Good."

Coach pointed toward the middle.

"Then the space opens."

"And if he doesn't?"

"Then you attack him."

Kai smiled slightly.

That made sense.

Simple.

But dangerous.

Leo added another instruction.

"Don't spend the whole game trying to beat him."

Kai looked over.

"You mean the full-back?"

"Yes."

Leo folded his arms.

"If you beat him once and lose the ball three times after that, you haven't helped us."

Kai nodded.

The words stayed with him.

He didn't need to prove he could dribble past someone.

He needed to make the right decision.

That was different.

---

Training began again before the sun had a chance to soften.

The grass was warm beneath Kai's boots.

Sweat ran down his back within minutes.

Coach Ramirez divided the team into two groups.

One side played as San Isidro.

The other was instructed to copy Maddela's defensive shape.

They crowded the center.

They stayed compact.

They waited.

Kai received the ball near the right touchline.

A defender stepped toward him.

Kai slowed.

The player slowed too.

Kai looked inside.

Nothing.

He rolled the ball backward to Jared.

Jared returned it.

Kai moved again.

This time, the defender followed him farther.

Miguel immediately pointed toward the space.

"Now!"

Kai cut inside.

The ball came toward him.

One touch.

He played it to Tomas.

Tomas turned.

Rafael was running behind the defense.

The pass went through.

Rafael reached it.

He crossed.

Marco missed.

The ball went out.

Coach Ramirez blew the whistle.

"Again."

Everyone reset.

Rafael put his hands on his hips.

"We almost had it."

"Almost doesn't count."

Rafael sighed.

"Coach really loves that line."

Kai smiled.

They started again.

---

The second attempt was different.

Kai stayed wider.

Jared moved closer.

Miguel dropped behind them.

The ball traveled from left to right.

Rafael received it first.

Instead of forcing the play, he returned it to Miguel.

Miguel switched the ball.

Jared passed to Kai.

The defender came out.

Kai took one touch forward.

The defender followed.

Kai stopped.

For half a second, nothing happened.

Then he passed backward.

Jared immediately moved into the space Kai had created.

The defender hesitated.

That was enough.

Jared sent the ball forward.

Kai was already running.

He reached it near the corner.

A second defender came across.

Kai looked up.

Marco was inside.

Tomas was arriving at the edge of the box.

Rafael was on the far side.

Three options.

Kai chose Tomas.

The pass was low and quick.

Tomas struck it.

Goal.

The players shouted.

Coach Ramirez didn't celebrate.

He simply pointed toward Kai.

"That."

Kai caught his breath.

"That?"

"That's what I want."

Move them.

Create the space.

Use it.

No unnecessary dribbling.

No forcing the final pass.

Kai nodded.

This time, he didn't need anyone to explain why.

---

The session continued for another hour.

They worked on corners.

Free kicks.

Defensive transitions.

What to do if Maddela scored first.

What to do if San Isidro scored first.

What to do if the game remained tied late.

Every possibility had an answer.

But football was still football.

No plan survived perfectly once the whistle blew.

Kai knew that.

Maybe that was what made him excited.

The plan gave them direction.

The match would demand the rest.

---

Near the end of training, Kai sat on the grass.

His legs were heavy.

His shirt clung to his back.

Rafael dropped beside him with a bottle of water.

"I hate preparation."

Kai took a drink.

"You were complaining during training too."

"I hate everything."

"You don't."

Rafael thought about it.

"Fine. I hate being tired."

Miguel walked past them.

"Then don't run."

Rafael looked offended.

"That's not how football works."

Miguel shrugged.

"Exactly."

Kai laughed.

Rafael pointed at him.

"You're enjoying this too much."

"A little."

---

Belle was standing near the sideline.

She had been quiet throughout the training session.

Her camera clicked occasionally, but she wasn't trying to capture every movement.

She was waiting.

Kai noticed her watching.

He walked over.

"You didn't take many pictures."

"I did."

"Not as many as usual."

Belle lowered the camera.

"I was watching."

"Watching what?"

"How you play when you already know what you want to do."

Kai frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She thought for a moment.

"Before, you reacted."

Kai waited.

"Now you look like you're expecting things to happen."

He wasn't sure what to say.

Belle smiled.

"That's probably good."

Kai looked back at the field.

Maybe she was right.

The game used to feel like something happening around him.

Now he was starting to see the spaces before they appeared.

Not always.

Not perfectly.

But enough.

His phone buzzed in his pocket.

He checked it.

A message from his father.

Daniel: Good luck tomorrow, anak.

Kai stared at it for a moment.

He typed back.

Kai: Thanks, Dad.

Another message appeared.

Daniel: Play your game. Don't worry about the rest.

Kai smiled.

He put the phone away.

---

The sun was beginning to drop when Coach Ramirez finally called the team together.

"That's enough."

Nobody argued.

They were exhausted.

Ramirez looked at them one by one.

"Tomorrow isn't about showing everyone how good you are."

He paused.

"It's about playing the football we've trained to play."

His eyes moved toward Kai.

"Trust your teammates."

Then Miguel.

"Trust the system."

Then Rafael.

"And don't do anything stupid."

Rafael raised a hand.

"Coach—"

"That wasn't a suggestion."

The team laughed.

Even Ramirez smiled this time.

"Go rest."

The players began gathering their bags.

Kai looked once more at the whiteboard.

The lineup was still there.

The opponent's name was still written above it.

MADDELA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

Tomorrow, the name would no longer be printed on a screen.

It would be eleven players standing across from them.

Kai zipped his bag shut.

His boots were still damp with sweat.

His legs hurt.

His mind was tired.

But underneath all of that was something he hadn't felt before.

Readiness.

Not confidence that they would win.

Not certainty that everything would go according to plan.

Just the feeling that they had done what they could.

Tomorrow would answer the rest.

Rafael called from the doorway.

"Kai!"

He looked up.

"You coming?"

Kai stood.

"Yeah."

He switched off the room light.

Then followed his teammates outside.

The first match was waiting.

And now, at least, they knew exactly who was waiting for them.

San Isidro High School vs. Maddela National High School.
