The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 53: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead

The room was quieter than usual.

Not silent.

That would have been impossible with Rafael around.

But quieter.

Most of the team had already finished dinner. Their bags were beside their mattresses, boots lined up near the wall, and tomorrow's uniforms had been folded neatly on top of their things.

Nobody had to say what they were thinking.

Tomorrow was the match.

Kai sat on the edge of his mattress and tightened the laces on one boot.

Then loosened them.

Then tightened them again.

Across the room, Rafael noticed.

"You've been doing that for five minutes."

Kai looked down.

"Have I?"

"Yeah."

Rafael leaned back against the wall.

"You nervous?"

Kai considered the question.

"A little."

Rafael nodded.

"Me too."

Kai looked at him.

That answer was unexpected.

Rafael usually had something funny to say.

Instead, he stared at the ceiling.

"First regional match," he said quietly. "Feels different."

Kai understood.

The school championship had been big.

But this was bigger.

There were more teams.

More coaches.

More people watching.

And somewhere outside this building, players from other schools were probably having the same conversation.

Wondering if they were ready.

Kai finished tying his boot.

"We'll be fine."

Rafael looked at him.

"You sure?"

"No."

Rafael laughed.

"At least you're honest."

Kai smiled.

"But we'll find out tomorrow."

Rafael nodded.

"Fair."

---

Coach Ramirez entered the room a few minutes later.

Everyone slowly sat up.

Ramirez looked around.

"Lights out in thirty minutes."

A few players groaned.

Rafael raised a hand.

"Coach."

Ramirez already knew.

"What?"

"Can I have ten more minutes?"

"No."

"Five?"

"No."

"One?"

Ramirez stared at him.

Rafael lowered his hand.

"Understood."

Leo appeared behind Ramirez.

"Good. Because we're checking rooms."

Rafael looked horrified.

"Checking?"

Leo nodded.

"Making sure nobody stays awake."

Rafael pointed at Kai.

"He looks suspicious."

Kai stared at him.

"Why me?"

"You've been tying your shoes for five minutes."

Coach Ramirez shook his head.

"Sleep."

He turned toward the door.

Then stopped.

"One more thing."

The room became quiet.

"Tomorrow, don't try to win the whole tournament in the first ten minutes."

Kai listened.

"Play the match in front of you."

Ramirez looked at each player.

"Simple passes."

"Good communication."

"Stay disciplined."

"And trust your teammates."

His eyes briefly settled on Kai.

"Don't force things."

Kai nodded.

"Yes, Coach."

Ramirez left.

The door closed.

Rafael looked at Kai.

"He was definitely talking about you."

Kai smiled.

"Probably."

---

At 8:42 that evening, Kai's phone vibrated.

A message from Maria.

Mom: Are you free?

Kai smiled.

He immediately replied.

Kai: Yeah.

Another message came.

Mom: Video call?

Kai looked around the room.

Most of his teammates were already getting ready for bed.

He put on his earphones.

Kai: Sure.

A few seconds later, the screen lit up.

Maria appeared first.

Then Sofia pushed her way into the frame.

"KUYA!"

Kai pulled the phone slightly away from his ear.

"You're loud."

"I missed you."

"You saw me three days ago."

"That's long."

Maria laughed from behind her.

"Let your brother breathe."

Sofia ignored her.

"Show me where you are."

Kai turned the camera around.

The room appeared on the screen.

Mattresses.

Bags.

Football boots.

Rafael happened to walk behind him.

Sofia immediately recognized him.

"Rafael!"

Rafael stopped.

He looked at Kai.

"Is that your sister?"

Kai nodded.

Rafael leaned toward the phone.

"Hi, Sofia."

"Are you going to play tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Are you good?"

Rafael placed a hand over his chest.

"Very."

Kai laughed.

Sofia looked at him.

"Kuya, don't let him lie."

Rafael looked offended.

"I am good."

Kai shook his head.

"She's known you for five minutes."

"She's smart."

Maria smiled.

"How are you, Kai?"

The question was simple.

But Kai paused.

"I'm good."

Maria studied his face through the screen.

"Really?"

Kai smiled.

"Really."

Daniel's voice came from somewhere behind them.

"Ask him if he ate."

Maria turned.

"You heard your father."

Kai laughed.

"I ate."

"What did you eat?"

"Rice. Chicken. Vegetables."

Daniel appeared briefly beside Maria.

"Enough?"

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

His father looked at him for a second.

Then nodded.

"Good."

That was all.

But Kai knew what it meant.

---

Sofia moved closer to the camera.

"Kuya."

"What?"

"Did you bring the thing I asked for?"

Kai frowned.

"You asked for food from Tuguegarao."

"Yes."

"I haven't bought anything yet."

Sofia looked disappointed.

"You promised."

"I said I'd bring something."

"Same thing."

"It's not."

"It is."

Kai laughed.

Maria shook her head.

"Don't worry about that. Focus on your game."

Sofia crossed her arms.

"But I want pasalubong."

Daniel sat down beside Maria.

"Just bring yourself home."

The room on Kai's side seemed to become quieter.

Kai looked at his father.

Daniel didn't smile.

He didn't need to.

Kai nodded.

"I will."

---

Maria looked at the time.

"You should sleep soon."

"I know."

"Don't stay up talking."

Kai glanced toward Rafael.

Rafael immediately pointed at himself.

"Not me."

Maria laughed.

"Good luck tomorrow."

Kai hesitated.

"Thanks, Mom."

Sofia waved both hands.

"GO KUYA!"

Kai smiled.

"Thanks."

"Score a goal!"

Kai laughed.

"I'll try."

"Two!"

"One is enough."

"Three!"

"You're asking too much."

Sofia grinned.

"I know."

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

"Play your game."

Kai looked at him.

His father's voice remained calm.

"Don't worry about everything else."

Kai nodded slowly.

"Okay."

The call ended.

The screen went dark.

For a few seconds, Kai kept looking at his phone.

Then he placed it beside him.

He felt lighter.

Not because tomorrow had become easier.

It hadn't.

But because, for a moment, the distance between Tuguegarao and home didn't feel so large.

---

The room slowly settled again.

One by one, the players turned off their phones.

Rafael climbed onto his mattress.

"Your family seems nice."

Kai lay back.

"They are."

Rafael stared at the ceiling.

"Mine would probably tell me to stop eating."

Kai laughed.

"They'd be right."

"You're supposed to disagree."

"You ate three servings at dinner."

"Exactly."

Kai smiled.

The lights went out.

Darkness filled the room.

Outside, a vehicle passed along the road.

Its headlights briefly slipped through the window before disappearing.

Kai closed his eyes.

Tomorrow.

Maddela National High School.

Their first group match.

He pictured the field.

The grass.

The lines.

The goal.

The players waiting on the other side.

He thought about his position.

Right wing.

He thought about Miguel in midfield.

Rafael on the left.

Marco up front.

Tomas behind him.

The back line.

Enzo in goal.

They had spent days preparing.

Tomorrow, preparation would become reality.

Kai took a slow breath.

He wasn't trying to prove he was a star.

Not yet.

He just wanted to play well.

Make the right decisions.

Help the team.

And see what happened.

His breathing gradually slowed.

Then—

A faint sound appeared in the darkness.

Beep.

Kai's eyes opened.

He stared at the ceiling.

Nothing.

His phone was still beside him.

The screen was dark.

He waited.

Silence.

Kai frowned.

Maybe he had imagined it.

He closed his eyes again.

A few seconds passed.

Then a faint blue glow appeared beneath his blanket.

Kai immediately opened his eyes.

His heart skipped.

He pulled the blanket slightly upward.

A small translucent screen hovered above his wrist.

No one else seemed to notice.

The familiar mechanical voice came quietly.

[Football Legacy System.]

Kai froze.

It had been quiet for days.

He had almost forgotten about it.

Then another line appeared.

[Regional Competition Detected.]

Kai stared at the words.

A second message followed.

[First official regional match begins tomorrow.]

His throat tightened.

Then—

[Preparation phase complete.]

Kai swallowed.

A final notification appeared.

[Match evaluation will begin at kickoff.]

The blue light disappeared.

Kai remained completely still.

Across the room, Rafael shifted in his sleep.

Kai slowly pulled his blanket back down.

He stared into the darkness.

The system was awake again.

But this time, it wasn't telling him what to do.

It was waiting.

Kai turned onto his side.

A small smile appeared on his face.

"Tomorrow, then."

He closed his eyes.

Outside, Tuguegarao remained awake.

Cars passed in the distance.

Voices faded through the night.

Somewhere else, another team was preparing for the same match.

But inside the quiet room, Kai finally relaxed.

The night grew quieter.

Most of the team was already asleep.

The room that had been filled with voices only an hour ago was now almost silent.

Kai lay on his mattress, staring at the ceiling.

Tomorrow would be different.

No more ceremonies.

No more meetings.

No more waiting for the draw.

Tomorrow, they would finally step onto the field.

Kai reached for his phone.

A notification was waiting.

A family video call.

He hesitated for a second before answering.

Maria appeared first.

"You're still awake?"

Kai smiled.

"Just about to sleep."

Daniel appeared beside her.

"How was the opening ceremony?"

"Long."

Sofia suddenly pushed her face between them.

"Did you see lots of athletes?"

Kai laughed.

"Yeah. A lot."

"Did Belle take pictures of you?"

Kai paused.

"Why are you asking that?"

Sofia grinned.

"Because you always complain about her."

Daniel chuckled.

Maria smiled.

"Just let her take the pictures."

Kai shook his head.

"You're all on her side."

"Of course," Sofia said.

Kai laughed.

The conversation continued for a few more minutes.

Nothing important.

Nothing dramatic.

Just home.

Eventually, Maria looked at the time.

"Get some sleep."

"I will."

Daniel nodded.

"Tomorrow is your first game."

Kai's smile faded slightly.

"Yeah."

His father looked at him through the screen.

"You don't need to prove everything tomorrow."

Kai stayed quiet.

"Just play your game."

Kai nodded.

"I will."

Sofia raised her fist toward the camera.

"Score a goal, Kuya!"

Kai laughed.

"I'll try."

"Not try. Score."

"Okay, okay."

The call ended.

Kai placed the phone beside his pillow.

For a moment, he stared at the dark screen.

His family was hundreds of kilometers away.

They wouldn't be in the stands tomorrow.

But somehow, knowing they would be watching made the distance feel smaller.

Kai turned onto his side.

The room was quiet again.

Tomorrow would be different.

No more ceremonies.

No more meetings.

No more waiting for the draw.

Tomorrow, there would only be the field.

Grass beneath his boots.

The sound of the crowd.

The whistle.

Ten teammates around him.

And eleven players on the other side trying to take the same three points.

Kai thought about Maddela.

He thought about Coach Ramirez's words.

Respect every opponent.

He thought about Miguel's calm voice.

Rafael's jokes.

Belle's camera.

His father's advice.

Then he exhaled slowly.

For once, Kai wasn't wondering whether he belonged.

He only wanted to play.

Tomorrow, San Isidro would begin its regional journey.

Kai pulled the blanket closer.

His eyes grew heavy.

The sounds outside the room slowly faded.

One last thought crossed his mind.

Let's see how far we can go.

Then sleep finally came.
