Chapter 51: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead
The morning after the opening ceremony felt different.
There was no parade.
No music.
No banners moving through the streets.
Just the sound of football boots against the concrete floor outside the room.
Kai woke before his alarm.
For a moment, he stayed on his mattress and listened.
Someone was already moving around.
A bag zipped shut.
A chair scraped against the floor.
Then Rafael's voice came from across the room.
"What time is it?"
Kai reached for his phone.
"Five forty."
Rafael groaned.
"Why does football always start when the sun is still asleep?"
Kai sat up.
"Because Coach doesn't care about the sun."
Rafael pulled the blanket away from his face.
"That's true."
Kai smiled.
He reached for his training shirt.
Today wasn't a match.
Not yet.
But something important was happening.
The football managers were holding their technical meeting.
And after that meeting, the teams would finally know how the competition would be played.
---
By six-thirty, the football team was already outside.
Coach Ramirez stood near the entrance with Assistant Coach Leo.
Leo checked the names on his list.
"Kai."
"Here."
"Miguel."
"Here."
"Rafael."
Silence.
Leo looked up.
Rafael raised his hand from behind the group.
"Here."
Leo stared at him.
"You were standing there the entire time."
"I wanted to make sure you remembered me."
Leo sighed.
"Don't test me this early."
Rafael grinned.
Kai tried not to laugh.
Coach Ramirez looked at the team.
"Training first."
A few players exchanged surprised looks.
Rafael whispered,
"I thought we were going to the meeting."
"We are."
"Then why are we training?"
Ramirez looked directly at him.
"Because the meeting doesn't make you better."
Rafael immediately stopped talking.
Miguel nodded.
"Fair."
---
The training session was shorter than usual.
Coach focused on ball movement.
Quick passing.
Movement without the ball.
Defensive transitions.
Nothing complicated.
But Ramirez stopped them more often.
"Again."
The players reset.
"Faster."
They moved again.
Leo watched the midfield.
"Don't stand after you pass."
Kai received the ball.
He released it to Miguel and immediately moved into space.
Miguel returned it.
Kai took one touch.
Rafael was already running.
Kai slipped the ball forward.
Rafael reached it and crossed.
Jared attacked the near post.
The ball went just beyond him.
"Good idea," Leo called.
"Better timing next time."
Kai nodded.
The team was slowly finding its rhythm.
They didn't know their opponents yet.
But they knew one thing.
The level would be higher than the school tournament.
---
After training, the players changed and followed Coach Ramirez to the technical meeting.
The room was inside the sports administration area.
Several other football teams were already there.
Kai slowed when he entered.
For the first time, he could put faces to some of the names.
Different uniforms.
Different school colors.
Different coaches.
Some players looked older.
Some looked physically stronger.
Others were quiet, sitting together with their teammates.
Rafael leaned toward Kai.
"Which one do you think is the strongest?"
Kai looked around.
"I don't know."
"Good answer."
Miguel sat on Kai's other side.
"Don't judge them yet."
Rafael nodded.
"Fine."
Then he pointed toward a tall player across the room.
"What about him?"
Miguel looked.
"Definitely taller than you."
Rafael frowned.
"That's not what I asked."
Kai laughed quietly.
---
A tournament official stepped toward the front.
The room gradually became silent.
A projector turned on.
The CAVRAA football competition title appeared on the screen.
SECONDARY BOYS FOOTBALL
Below it was the list of participating teams.
Kai read each name carefully.
San Isidro High School — Nueva Vizcaya
Tuguegarao East National High School — Cagayan
Lal-lo National High School — Cagayan
Ilagan City National High School — Isabela
Maddela National High School — Quirino
Aparri National High School — Cagayan
Santiago National High School — Isabela
Bayombong National High School — Nueva Vizcaya
Kai paused.
Another Nueva Vizcaya school.
He looked at Coach Ramirez.
Ramirez noticed.
"Different football division."
Kai nodded.
That made sense.
The delegation could have athletes from several schools, but San Isidro remained the football team representing their designated slot in this storyline.
The official continued explaining the competition.
There would be a preliminary stage before the knockout rounds.
The teams would be divided into groups.
Each team would play the others in its group.
Points would determine the standings.
The top teams would advance.
The exact advancement rules were displayed on the next slide.
Kai leaned forward.
Now it was becoming real.
---
The official continued.
"For today's draw, the teams will be separated into two groups."
The room became quieter.
"Each group will contain four teams."
Rafael whispered,
"Here we go."
Kai looked at the screen.
The draw began.
One team at a time.
The first name appeared.
Then the next.
The room reacted differently to each result.
Some players smiled.
Others exchanged serious looks.
Finally, the official announced the first group.
Group A
San Isidro High School — Nueva Vizcaya
Lal-lo National High School — Cagayan
Maddela National High School — Quirino
Aparri National High School — Cagayan
Rafael leaned closer to Kai.
"Not bad."
Kai looked at the names.
"I don't know."
"You always say that."
"Because we don't."
Miguel looked at the screen.
"We'll find out."
The second group appeared.
Group B
Tuguegarao East National High School — Cagayan
Ilagan City National High School — Isabela
Santiago National High School — Isabela
Bayombong National High School — Nueva Vizcaya
Kai studied the groups.
Tuguegarao East wasn't in theirs.
That meant their opening match wouldn't
come with the pressure of facing one of the tournament favorites.
It didn't make things easier.
It simply meant they had one less thing to
think about..
Rafael let out a quiet breath.
"Good."
Kai glanced at him.
"Why?"
Rafael shrugged.
"I'd rather not face one of the favorites right away."
Miguel gave him a look.
"Sooner or later, you'll have to play them."
Rafael scratched the back of his neck.
"Yeah... but 'later' sounds a lot better than
'first day.'"
Kai couldn't help but smile.
Miguel shook his head.
"One match at a time.".
Kai nodded.
Maddela came first.
Everything else could wait.
---
The official explained the schedule.
Each team would play three group-stage matches.
A win would earn three points.
A draw would earn one.
A loss would earn none.
The top two teams from each group would advance to the semifinals.
Kai looked at the bracket on the screen.
So there was no room for careless games.
Three matches.
Three chances to prove themselves.
Then, if they survived, one semifinal.
And one final.
Rafael counted quietly.
"Five matches if we reach the final."
Miguel corrected him.
"Four."
Rafael frowned.
"Three group games, semifinal, final."
Miguel paused.
"That's five."
Rafael pointed at him.
"See?"
Miguel shook his head.
Kai laughed.
Even in a regional competition, Rafael remained Rafael.
---
Then came the match schedule.
The official displayed Group A.
Kai's eyes immediately moved to the first match.
Match 1
San Isidro High School vs. Maddela National High School
The room around him seemed to become quieter.
Kai stared at the screen.
Maddela.
That was their first opponent.
Not the strongest-looking name.
Not the weakest.
Just the first team standing between them and the points they needed.
Coach Ramirez leaned slightly toward the players.
"Remember this."
Everyone looked at him.
"The group doesn't matter if you don't respect every opponent."
Kai nodded.
Leo added,
"And don't look beyond the first match."
Rafael raised his hand.
"What if we win?"
Leo looked at him.
"Then we prepare for the second."
"And if we lose?"
"Then you learn from it."
Rafael nodded slowly.
"Okay."
Leo smiled faintly.
"That's the answer."
---
The meeting continued for another thirty minutes.
Ground rules.
Match procedures.
Uniform requirements.
Warm-up schedules.
Player registration.
Officials.
Medical protocols.
The details were boring to some players.
But Kai listened.
Every detail mattered.
This wasn't their school tournament anymore.
Nobody would make things easier because they were young.
Nobody cared about their championship medal.
The whistle would decide everything.
---
When the meeting ended, the teams began leaving.
Kai stood and looked once more at the screen.
Group A.
San Isidro.
Lal-lo.
Maddela.
Aparri.
Three matches.
One goal.
Advance.
That was all.
Rafael came beside him.
"You're staring again."
Kai smiled.
"Thinking."
Rafael laughed.
"Same thing."
Kai looked at him.
"You stole that from Belle."
"Maybe."
They walked out together.
---
Outside the building, Belle was waiting.
Her camera was already in her hands.
She looked at their faces.
"So?"
Rafael answered first.
"We have a group."
Belle's eyes widened.
"Already?"
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
"Who are you playing?"
"Maddela first."
Belle immediately lifted her camera.
"Hold on."
Click.
Rafael laughed.
"You didn't even ask us to pose."
"I don't need to."
She looked at Kai.
"How do you feel?"
Kai thought for a moment.
His stomach felt tight.
Not from fear exactly.
Something else.
Anticipation.
"I want to play."
Belle smiled.
"That's a better answer."
She lowered the camera.
"Then I guess I know what I'm documenting next."
---
That afternoon, the team returned to the field.
Coach Ramirez placed the group schedule on the whiteboard.
Nobody joked.
Nobody complained.
The names were there now.
Real opponents.
Real matches.
Real points.
Kai stood in front of the board.
Maddela National High School.
Their first test.
He remembered how he had felt before the school final.
Back then, he had wondered whether he was good enough.
Now the question felt different.
Not whether he belonged.
But how far he could go.
Coach Ramirez blew the whistle.
"Enough looking."
Everyone turned.
"Get on the field."
Kai tightened the laces on his boots.
Rafael jogged past him.
"Ready?"
Kai stood.
"Yeah."
Miguel called from the center.
"Let's go."
Leo raised his voice.
"Move!"
The team stepped onto the field.
The sun was already high.
The heat pressed against their skin.
Sweat appeared almost immediately.
But nobody complained.
Their first match had a name.
Their group had a shape.
And for the first time since arriving in Tuguegarao...
the road ahead had a clear direction.
San Isidro High School vs. Maddela National High School.
The regional stage had begun.
End of Chapter 6.5
