The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 50: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead

Kai woke up before the alarm.

For a few seconds, he didn't remember where he was.

The ceiling was different.

The fan sounded different.

Even the morning light coming through the classroom windows felt unfamiliar.

Then he heard someone groan from the other side of the room.

"Five more minutes."

Rafael.

Kai closed his eyes again.

"You're awake."

"No."

"You just answered me."

"That wasn't me."

Kai laughed quietly.

Around them, the room was slowly coming alive.

Mattresses moved.

Bags opened.

Someone searched for a missing shirt.

Another player was already fixing his hair using the reflection of his phone.

Then Leo appeared at the doorway.

"Up."

Nobody moved.

Leo folded his arms.

"Now."

Rafael pulled the blanket over his head.

Leo sighed.

"Rafael."

A muffled voice came from underneath.

"Yes?"

"Get up."

"Why?"

"Because we're leaving."

Rafael slowly sat up.

"Already?"

Leo checked his watch.

"You have twenty minutes."

Rafael stared at him.

"That's not enough."

"You only need to put on a shirt."

"Exactly."

Kai shook his head.

Some things never changed.

---

Outside, the compound was already busy.

Athletes moved between buildings wearing their delegation uniforms.

Teachers were carrying folders.

Volunteers were giving directions.

Buses arrived one after another.

The atmosphere was completely different from the quiet school they had entered the previous afternoon.

Today, everyone seemed to have somewhere to be.

Kai adjusted the collar of his delegation shirt.

The Nueva Vizcaya name was printed across the back.

He ran his fingers over it.

For some reason, seeing it there felt heavier than he expected.

Rafael stood beside him.

"Looks good."

Kai looked at him.

"You finally fixed your hair."

"Important day."

Miguel walked past.

"You should have done that yesterday."

Rafael frowned.

"Yesterday was travel day."

"Excuse."

"Truth."

Kai smiled.

---

Belle arrived with her camera hanging around her neck.

She wore the same student media jacket from the previous day.

Her camera bag was secured across her shoulder.

She stopped in front of the group.

"Everyone ready?"

Rafael pointed at her camera.

"You're not going to take pictures of me sleeping again, right?"

Belle smiled.

"No promises."

"Belle."

Click.

Rafael stared at her.

"You already took one!"

"Exactly."

Kai laughed.

Belle looked at him.

"Don't encourage him."

"I'm not."

"You are."

Kai shrugged.

She raised the camera again.

Click.

"Stop."

"No."

Kai shook his head.

He was starting to understand that there was no winning against Belle.

---

The delegation gathered outside the compound.

Different groups were being arranged.

Basketball.

Volleyball.

Athletics.

Swimming.

Badminton.

Table tennis.

Football.

Each group wore their own uniforms or team gear, but the delegation identity connected them all.

Kai looked around.

There were athletes younger than him.

Some looked nervous.

Others were laughing.

A few stood quietly with their coaches.

The teachers moved through the crowd, checking names and positions.

Coach Ramirez arrived with Leo.

"Football team."

Everyone straightened.

Ramirez looked at them.

"Stay together."

Leo added,

"Don't wander off."

Rafael raised his hand.

"Even if we see food?"

Leo stared at him.

"Especially then."

The team laughed.

---

The parade route was already crowded.

As the delegation moved toward the designated area, Kai could hear music coming from ahead.

Drums.

Announcements.

Voices.

Applause.

The closer they got, the louder it became.

Kai felt the hairs on his arms rise.

He had played in front of a large crowd before.

But this was different.

There were athletes everywhere.

Not just football players.

Not just one school.

Entire delegations.

Different uniforms.

Different banners.

Different provinces and cities.

Different sports.

Belle moved along the side, taking photographs.

Click.

A row of athletes holding their delegation banner.

Click.

A group of young runners laughing nervously.

Click.

A coach fixing one athlete's collar.

Click.

Then she turned toward Kai.

Click.

He noticed.

"Again?"

Belle lowered the camera.

"You looked serious."

"I am serious."

"That's why I took it."

Kai smiled.

---

The parade began.

The crowd became louder.

Delegations moved forward one after another.

Flags and banners rose above the athletes.

People along the route clapped and called out names.

Some athletes waved.

Others smiled nervously.

Kai walked with the football team.

The Nueva Vizcaya delegation moved together.

He could hear Rafael beside him.

"This is crazy."

Kai glanced over.

"What?"

"Look around."

Kai did.

The road ahead seemed full of athletes.

The sound of drums rolled through the streets.

People were standing along the sides.

Phones were raised.

Some were recording.

Belle was already moving around the delegation, capturing everything she could.

Kai looked at her for a second.

She caught him watching.

She smiled.

Then pointed her camera toward him.

Kai laughed.

"Of course."

---

As they continued, Kai noticed something.

The athletes weren't all the same.

Some looked physically stronger.

Some were smaller.

Some looked younger.

Others seemed much more experienced.

But they all walked with the same expression.

Purpose.

They had all come here for something.

A medal.

A record.

A team victory.

A personal goal.

Maybe simply the chance to compete.

Kai looked down at the Nueva Vizcaya name on his shirt.

A few weeks ago, he had only wanted to become good enough to stay on the field.

Now he was walking through a regional parade.

He didn't know where football would take him.

But he knew he wanted to keep going.

---

The parade eventually reached the main venue.

The crowd grew larger.

The athletes were directed toward their assigned areas.

Music played over the speakers.

Announcements echoed across the venue.

Kai looked around.

The scale of everything made the school tournament feel very far away.

Rafael leaned closer.

"Do you think we're supposed to be nervous?"

Kai thought about it.

"Probably."

Rafael nodded.

"Good."

Kai looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because if you're nervous, you know it's important."

Kai smiled.

"You stole that from someone."

Rafael pointed toward Belle.

"She said it yesterday."

Belle, walking behind them, heard it.

"I did not."

Rafael shrugged.

"Close enough."

---

The opening ceremony began.

Athletes were seated by delegation.

Coaches stood near the sides.

Officials moved toward the stage.

A large crowd filled the surrounding areas.

Kai sat between Miguel and Rafael.

Belle stood farther back with the media group.

Her camera was constantly moving.

She captured the stage.

The athletes.

The banners.

The crowd.

Then she turned the camera toward Kai's group.

Kai noticed her again.

This time, he didn't complain.

He simply smiled.

Click.

---

The speeches began.

One official welcomed the delegations.

Another spoke about sportsmanship.

Another reminded the athletes that the competition was not only about medals.

Kai listened.

Some words passed over him.

Others stayed.

Respect.

Discipline.

Camaraderie.

Excellence.

Then came the formal declaration that the regional meet was officially open.

The crowd erupted.

Applause rolled through the venue.

Athletes cheered.

Some raised their flags.

Rafael stood up with everyone else.

Kai followed.

For a moment, he simply looked around.

The competition had officially begun.

---

After the ceremony, the delegation returned to the billeting area.

The energy was different now.

Before the opening, everything had felt like preparation.

Now it felt real.

Matches and events would begin.

Schedules would matter.

Mistakes would matter.

Every performance would be recorded.

Kai walked with the football team.

Coach Ramirez joined them.

"Tomorrow morning, football training."

Rafael groaned.

"Tomorrow?"

Ramirez looked at him.

"Did you think the parade was the competition?"

Rafael paused.

"...Maybe."

Miguel laughed.

Coach shook his head.

"Rest this afternoon."

"Eat properly."

"And don't stay up late."

Leo added,

"Especially you, Rafael."

Rafael looked offended.

"Why me?"

"Because you ask questions like that."

Kai laughed.

---

Back at the room, Kai removed his delegation shirt and placed it carefully on his mattress.

He looked at the Nueva Vizcaya name one more time.

Then he folded it.

Outside, the sounds of the regional meet continued.

Athletes laughing.

Coaches talking.

Buses arriving.

A whistle from somewhere nearby.

It no longer sounded unfamiliar.

It sounded like the beginning of something.

Belle entered the room carrying her camera.

She looked tired.

"Long day."

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

She sat down.

Then checked her photographs.

Kai glanced over.

"How many?"

Belle looked at the screen.

"Four hundred eighty-two."

Kai stared.

"How?"

She smiled.

"You're going to be in a lot of them."

"Why?"

"Because you're part of the story."

Kai didn't know what to say to that.

Belle looked back at her camera.

Then quietly added,

"And so is everyone else."

Kai smiled.

---

That evening, the team gathered for dinner.

The food was simple.

Rice.

Chicken.

Vegetables.

Soup.

Nothing fancy.

But everyone ate quickly.

Rafael had already asked for another serving.

Leo looked at him.

"Slow down."

"I'm hungry."

"You'll regret it."

Rafael paused.

Then continued eating.

Kai laughed.

Miguel shook his head.

"He's impossible."

Jared nodded.

"Always."

---

Later, Kai stepped outside.

The sky above Tuguegarao was dark.

The air was warmer than Nueva Vizcaya.

He could hear distant traffic.

The city was still awake.

He thought about tomorrow.

Football training.

The field.

The teams they would face.

The players Arturo had been watching.

The tournament he had only heard about a few days ago.

Now he was standing inside it.

Kai looked down at his hands.

They were the same hands.

The same feet.

The same old boots waiting inside the room.

But the road ahead was no longer the same.

He heard footsteps behind him.

Belle.

She stopped beside him.

"You disappeared again."

Kai smiled.

"I like looking around."

Belle leaned against the railing.

"You nervous about tomorrow?"

Kai thought about lying.

Then decided against it.

"A little."

Belle nodded.

"Good."

Kai looked at her.

"You really like saying that."

She smiled.

"Maybe."

A short silence followed.

Then Belle raised her camera.

Kai immediately sighed.

"Don't."

Click.

Belle laughed.

"Too late."

Kai shook his head.

But this time, he was smiling.

Tomorrow, the football began.

And for the first time since the dream had started...

Kai wasn't wondering whether he belonged.

He was ready to find out.
