Chapter 49: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead
The bus left Nueva Vizcaya before sunrise.
Most of the players were still half-asleep.
The windows were fogged from the cold morning air, and the low hum of the engine had already become part of the background noise.
Kai sat beside the window.
His backpack rested between his feet.
His football boots were inside.
He had checked them twice before leaving home.
Maybe three times.
He looked outside.
The roads were still quiet.
Small stores were only beginning to open. A few motorcycles passed in the opposite direction, their headlights cutting through the early morning darkness.
Rafael was sitting across the aisle.
He had his hood pulled over his head.
His eyes were closed.
Kai glanced at him.
"Are you sleeping?"
Rafael opened one eye.
"No."
"You look asleep."
"I'm resting my eyes."
"That's sleeping."
Rafael closed his eye again.
"Don't ruin this for me."
Kai smiled and turned back toward the window.
---
The bus slowly filled with noise as the sun came up.
Athletes from different sports were traveling with them.
A group of basketball players were talking near the back.
Two volleyball players were comparing something on a phone.
Several runners were already discussing their events.
Near the front, teachers were checking attendance.
Coach Ramirez sat beside Assistant Coach Leo.
Leo had a folder open on his lap.
Every few minutes, he looked up and counted the players.
Rafael noticed.
"Coach Leo."
Leo looked back.
"What?"
"Are you counting us again?"
"Yes."
"We're all here."
"I know."
"Then why keep counting?"
Leo returned his eyes to the folder.
"Because every time I stop, someone disappears."
Rafael looked offended.
"Who disappeared?"
Leo raised an eyebrow.
"You."
"When?"
"Last training."
"I went to get water."
"You were gone for twenty minutes."
Rafael became quiet.
Kai laughed.
Miguel, sitting nearby, shook his head.
"He's already guilty."
"Traitor," Rafael muttered.
---
Belle moved through the bus with her camera.
She had been assigned to document the delegation from the moment they left.
She photographed the registration bags.
The athletes carrying their equipment.
The teachers checking names.
The sleepy faces.
Even Rafael pretending to sleep whenever he noticed the camera.
Click.
Rafael opened his eyes.
"Belle."
She lowered the camera.
"What?"
"Delete that."
"No."
"I wasn't ready."
"That's the point."
Rafael sighed.
Kai looked over.
"You've known her long enough."
"She never stops."
Belle smiled.
"You're learning."
She turned toward the front of the bus.
Then raised her camera again.
Click.
This time, she captured Coach Ramirez and Leo reviewing the tournament documents.
She checked the photo.
It looked ordinary.
But that was what she liked.
Not every important moment happened on a field.
---
Several hours passed.
The scenery slowly changed.
The mountains became less frequent.
The roads became busier.
The air grew warmer.
Kai noticed the difference first.
He lowered the window slightly.
Warm air entered the bus.
Rafael immediately complained.
"Close that."
Kai looked at him.
"Why?"
"It's hot."
"You said you were cold earlier."
"That was before."
Kai laughed.
"You complain about everything."
"I have standards."
Miguel looked toward them.
"You have problems."
Rafael pointed at him.
"That's not the same thing."
Kai smiled.
Outside, more buildings began appearing.
Traffic increased.
Signs became more frequent.
They were getting closer.
---
Then Kai saw it.
The bridge.
The long structure stretched across the river ahead of them.
The bus moved slowly toward it.
Kai sat straighter.
"Is that Buntun Bridge?"
Miguel looked outside.
"Yeah."
Rafael leaned toward the window.
"That's huge."
Kai watched as the bus entered the bridge.
The river stretched below them.
The morning light reflected across the water.
For a few seconds, even the loudest players became quiet.
Belle noticed.
She stood carefully in the aisle.
"Don't move."
Rafael turned.
"Why?"
"Just stay there."
She lifted her camera.
Click.
The photograph caught the delegation bus moving across the bridge, with the river stretching behind it.
Belle lowered the camera.
Kai looked outside again.
They were finally in Tuguegarao.
The feeling was strange.
They hadn't played a match yet.
Nothing had happened.
And yet Kai could already feel that this trip was different.
---
The city was busier than Kai expected.
Vehicles moved through the streets.
Stores were open.
Students in uniforms walked along the roads.
Banners and signs related to the regional meet could be seen around several areas.
Different delegations were arriving throughout the day.
Some buses carried athletes from other provinces.
Others carried teams from different cities.
Kai spotted a group wearing matching jackets.
Another bus passed them.
The players inside were wearing basketball uniforms.
Rafael watched them.
"That's another delegation."
Miguel nodded.
Kai looked around.
"There's so many of them."
Leo, who had moved toward the middle of the bus, heard him.
"That's the regional stage."
Kai looked at him.
Leo pointed outside.
"Remember what Coach said."
Kai nodded.
This wasn't just their tournament anymore.
It was bigger than San Isidro.
---
Their bus eventually turned into a school compound.
The sign near the entrance identified the school as their assigned billeting area.
Several teachers and volunteers were waiting for them.
The bus stopped.
Everyone immediately became louder.
"We're here!"
"Finally!"
"Get your bags!"
"Don't forget your shoes!"
Leo stood near the front.
"Nobody gets off until I say so."
Rafael was already standing.
Leo looked at him.
"Sit."
Rafael slowly sat down.
"Yes, sir."
Kai laughed.
A few minutes later, the players finally stepped outside.
The heat hit them immediately.
Kai adjusted the strap of his backpack.
The school compound was already busy.
Athletes from different sports were moving around.
Some carried mattresses.
Others carried bags.
Teachers were directing groups toward different buildings.
It felt less like a school and more like a temporary village.
---
Belle stepped off the bus last.
She raised her camera.
Click.
An athlete carrying a large equipment bag walked past.
Click.
Two teachers checking room assignments.
Click.
A group of runners laughing near the covered court.
Click.
She turned toward the football players.
Kai was carrying his own bag while Rafael struggled with two.
Belle smiled.
Click.
Rafael noticed.
"Again?"
"You're carrying two bags."
"Exactly."
"That's why it's funny."
"I regret knowing you."
Kai laughed.
---
Coach Ramirez gathered the football team.
"Listen."
The players formed a loose group around him.
"Your rooms are already assigned."
"Football players stay together."
"Leo will handle the room list."
Leo lifted the folder.
"And before anyone asks, no switching rooms."
Rafael raised his hand.
"Why?"
"Because I know you."
Rafael lowered his hand.
Kai looked at Miguel.
Miguel quietly said,
"He's going to try anyway."
"I know."
Leo began reading the names.
Kai listened.
When his name was called, he picked up his bag.
Rafael followed.
Miguel came behind them.
Jared and Enzo were assigned to the same area.
The group headed toward the building.
---
The room was simple.
A classroom converted into sleeping quarters.
Desks had been moved against the walls.
Thin mattresses were arranged across the floor.
A few electric fans were already running.
Kai placed his backpack beside his mattress.
Rafael dropped onto his.
"Finally."
Miguel looked around.
"Not bad."
Rafael stretched his arms.
"I could live here."
Kai glanced at him.
"After one night."
"Still counts."
Jared entered carrying his bag.
"Where do I sleep?"
Rafael pointed.
"Over there."
Jared looked at the mattress.
"That's yours."
Rafael frowned.
"How do you know?"
"I saw your name."
Rafael looked down.
"Oh."
Kai laughed.
The room already felt familiar.
---
Later that afternoon, the football players were given free time before the delegation's official activities.
Kai stepped outside.
The school compound was still busy.
He could hear basketballs bouncing somewhere nearby.
A whistle sounded from the covered court.
Someone shouted from a volleyball area.
A group of runners passed by.
Kai stood still for a moment.
Different sports.
Different athletes.
Different dreams.
He understood what Coach Ramirez had meant.
This was CAVRAA.
Not one team.
Not one field.
Not one sport.
A whole region gathered in one place.
---
Belle appeared beside him.
"You disappeared."
Kai looked at her.
"I was just looking around."
She lifted her camera.
"I figured."
Kai smiled.
"You've taken enough pictures today."
"No."
"How many?"
Belle checked the camera.
"Two hundred and seventeen."
Kai stared at her.
"Already?"
"That's not even a lot."
"It is to me."
Belle laughed.
She looked across the compound.
"Tomorrow is going to be worse."
"Why?"
"Opening activities."
Kai remembered what Coach had said.
The parade.
The delegations.
The ceremony.
The whole regional meet officially beginning.
He looked toward the road beyond the school.
For the first time, he felt a small knot form in his stomach.
Not fear.
Something closer to anticipation.
Belle noticed his expression.
"Nervous?"
Kai took a second before answering.
"A little."
She smiled.
"Good."
Kai looked at her.
"Good?"
"Means you care."
She raised her camera.
Click.
Kai sighed.
"You're impossible."
"I know."
---
That evening, the Nueva Vizcaya delegation gathered for a short briefing.
Athletes from different sports filled the covered court.
Teachers stood at the front.
The delegation head spoke about schedules, rules, attendance, and the next day's activities.
Kai sat with the football team.
Belle stood near the side with her camera.
She wasn't photographing everything now.
She was simply watching.
The athletes looked different under the lights.
Some were laughing.
Some were nervous.
Others were already focused.
Kai looked around.
He wondered how many of them had spent years preparing for this.
How many had dreamed of standing here.
How many would go home with medals.
How many wouldn't.
The thought made him sit a little straighter.
---
After the briefing, Coach Ramirez approached the football players.
"Get some sleep."
Rafael looked at him.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"No speech?"
Coach looked at him.
"You want one?"
Rafael immediately shook his head.
"No."
"Good."
Coach walked away.
Leo followed.
"Be in the room by ten."
Rafael sighed.
"Regional competition and curfew."
Miguel shrugged.
"You're fifteen."
"I know."
"Act like it."
Rafael looked at Kai.
"He's getting worse."
Kai smiled.
"He's right."
---
That night, Kai lay on his mattress.
The electric fan turned slowly above him.
Around the room, his teammates were settling down.
Someone whispered.
Someone laughed.
Then Leo's voice came from the doorway.
"Quiet."
The room became silent.
Kai smiled in the darkness.
His phone vibrated.
A message from Maria.
Maria: Did you arrive safely?
Kai typed back.
Kai: Yes, Mom.
Another message came.
Maria: How is it there?
Kai looked around the room.
He thought about the bus.
The bridge.
The city.
The other athletes.
The billeting school.
Everything felt bigger than he had imagined.
Kai: It's different.
A few seconds passed.
Maria: Different good?
Kai smiled.
Kai: Yeah.
Then another message appeared.
Maria: Your father says good luck.
Kai stared at the screen.
He could almost hear Daniel saying it without actually saying it.
Kai typed:
Kai: Tell Dad thanks.
He placed the phone beside him.
For a while, he listened to the sounds of the unfamiliar school.
Footsteps outside.
A distant whistle.
The hum of the fan.
Tomorrow, the entire regional meet would begin.
And Kai would finally see the stage he had only heard about.
He closed his eyes.
The next morning couldn't come fast enough.
