Chapter 48: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead
The day before the trip felt strangely normal.
That was what bothered Kai.
He had expected everyone to be nervous.
Instead, the school looked almost the same as it did every other morning.
Students walked between buildings.
Teachers carried folders.
Someone was arguing near the canteen about a missing notebook.
A bell rang somewhere in the distance.
And on the football field, Rafael was complaining about running.
"Coach, why do we need sprints?"
Coach Ramirez didn't even look at him.
"Because you're slow."
Rafael stopped.
"That's personal."
Leo laughed from the side.
"He's not wrong."
Rafael pointed at him.
"You too?"
Leo folded his arms.
"Especially me."
Kai couldn't help laughing.
Rafael looked at him.
"You're enjoying this."
"A little."
"Traitor."
Kai jogged back into position.
The whistle sounded again.
They ran.
---
The training session wasn't long.
Coach Ramirez had made that clear from the beginning.
No heavy workload.
No exhausting drills.
Just enough movement to keep their legs active.
The CAVRAA trip was tomorrow.
Everyone knew it.
Nobody wanted to arrive in Tuguegarao already tired.
Leo walked around the field, watching their touches.
"Keep the ball moving."
"Don't force anything."
"Again."
Kai received from Miguel.
The pass was slightly behind him.
He adjusted his body and brought it under control.
Miguel noticed.
"Better."
Kai looked at him.
"Better than what?"
"Last month."
Kai smiled.
"That's a long time."
Miguel shrugged.
"Still counts."
Rafael jogged past them.
"Can you two stop having football conversations for five minutes?"
Miguel looked at him.
"No."
Rafael sighed.
"I miss when we were bad."
Kai laughed.
"You still are."
"Excuse me?"
The whistle blew before Rafael could answer.
Coach Ramirez pointed toward the next station.
"Move."
Rafael muttered something under his breath.
Leo heard it.
"Language."
Rafael immediately looked innocent.
"I said good morning."
Leo raised an eyebrow.
"Sure."
---
Near the fence, Belle was filming again.
She wasn't only recording Kai this time.
She moved slowly along the sideline, capturing different parts of the training session.
Miguel receiving the ball.
Jared sprinting.
Enzo helping Leo with the equipment.
Rafael arguing with Coach Ramirez.
She zoomed in slightly.
Click.
Then another.
The camera followed the ball as it moved from one player to another.
Belle had started to realize something.
The best moments weren't always the goals.
Sometimes they were the small things.
A player helping another up.
A coach correcting someone's position.
A teammate making a joke when everyone was tired.
Those moments made the team feel real.
She lowered the camera.
Then noticed Kai looking toward her.
"What?"
Belle raised an eyebrow.
"Nothing."
"You were staring."
"I was filming."
"Same thing."
Kai smiled.
Belle laughed.
"You're learning."
Kai shook his head.
"That's Coach's word."
"I know."
She lifted the camera again.
Click.
---
After training, everyone helped pack the equipment.
Football bags were placed together.
Training bibs were folded.
Cones were counted.
Balls were checked one by one.
Leo held a clipboard.
"Twenty footballs."
He looked at Enzo.
"Count them again."
Enzo stared at him.
"We just counted them."
"Count them again."
"Why?"
"Because tomorrow you'll tell me we had twenty."
Enzo sighed.
"Okay."
Rafael walked past carrying a bag.
"Leo doesn't trust us."
Leo looked at him.
"I trust you."
Rafael smiled.
"Really?"
"No."
The team laughed.
Kai shook his head.
Even Leo was smiling now.
---
By noon, the football equipment had been packed.
The delegation's buses were being prepared at another part of the school.
Several other athletes were already gathering.
Kai saw students carrying basketballs.
A group of runners stood beside their coaches.
Volleyball players were checking their bags.
A few swimmers carried large equipment cases.
The school suddenly felt much bigger than usual.
This wasn't just a football trip.
It was a regional delegation.
Nueva Vizcaya was sending athletes from different sports to Tuguegarao.
Kai stood there for a moment, watching.
Rafael came beside him.
"That's a lot of people."
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
"You know what that means?"
"What?"
"More food."
Kai looked at him.
"That's what you're thinking about?"
"Obviously."
Miguel walked past them.
"You're impossible."
Rafael followed him.
"You're just jealous."
Kai laughed.
---
Belle was having a different problem.
She stood beside the media table with her camera bag open.
Batteries.
Memory cards.
Chargers.
Notebook.
Extra batteries.
Another memory card.
She checked everything twice.
A teacher approached.
"Belle?"
"Yes, ma'am?"
"Remember, you're documenting the delegation, not just the football team."
Belle nodded.
"I know."
"Opening activities, athletes, travel, and the competition."
"I'll cover everything."
The teacher smiled.
"And don't forget to rest."
Belle looked at the amount of equipment in front of her.
"I'll try."
---
That afternoon, Kai went home earlier than usual.
His bag was already packed.
Two sets of training clothes.
Extra shirts.
School uniform.
Football boots.
Slippers.
Toiletries.
His medal wasn't coming.
Neither was the Golden Boot.
Those belonged at home.
He looked at the old black boots sitting near the door.
Then picked them up.
The leather had become softer.
There were scratches along the sides.
They were clearly worn now.
Daniel walked into the room.
"You packing?"
Kai nodded.
"Almost done."
His father looked at the boots.
"Those again?"
Kai smiled.
"They still work."
Daniel reached down and touched one of them.
"They've been through a lot."
Kai looked at him.
"So have I."
Daniel laughed quietly.
"Don't get too dramatic."
Kai grinned.
Daniel handed the boot back.
"Take care of yourself."
"I will."
"And listen to your coach."
"I always do."
Daniel stared at him.
Kai hesitated.
"...Most of the time."
"Better."
---
At dinner, Sofia was unusually quiet.
Kai noticed.
"What's wrong?"
She poked her rice with her spoon.
"Nothing."
"That's never true."
She looked at him.
"You're going tomorrow."
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
"For several days."
"Probably."
She sighed.
"I'll miss you."
Kai paused.
He hadn't expected that.
He reached across the table and tapped her forehead lightly.
"I'll be back before you know it."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
Sofia thought for a moment.
"Bring me something."
Kai laughed.
"You already said that."
"I changed my mind."
"What do you want now?"
"Something good."
"Very specific."
Daniel laughed from across the table.
"Good luck."
Maria smiled.
"Just bring her something small."
Sofia immediately protested.
"Big."
Kai shook his head.
"Small."
"Big."
"Small."
"Big."
Maria finally interrupted.
"Both of you eat."
The table went quiet.
Then everyone laughed.
---
That night, Kai's phone buzzed again.
Belle.
Belle: Did you pack?
Kai: Yes.
Belle: Camera?
Kai: I don't have a camera.
Belle: Your face is going to be on camera.
Kai: That's worse.
Belle: You'll survive.
Kai smiled.
Kai: What time tomorrow?
Belle: Assembly is at 5:30 AM.
Kai stared at the message.
Kai: That's not morning.
Belle: It is.
Kai: That's night.
Belle: Sleep early.
Kai: You're starting to sound like Coach.
Belle: Good.
Another message came.
Belle: Don't be late.
Kai: I won't.
Belle: Rafael said the same thing.
Kai laughed.
Kai: He'll be late.
Belle: Probably.
Kai put the phone down.
For some reason, he was already looking forward to tomorrow.
---
Across the region, Arturo Villanueva was still working.
His notebook lay open on his desk.
Several names were written across the page.
Different schools.
Different players.
Different positions.
He stopped at one name.
Kai Bendaño.
Arturo tapped the pen against the paper.
The school tournament had been impressive.
But it had also been limited.
One tournament.
One level.
One environment.
Tuguegarao would tell him more.
He wrote another sentence beneath Kai's name.
Observe consistency.
Then another.
Do not judge from one tournament.
Arturo closed the notebook.
He didn't need to meet Kai yet.
Not yet.
First, he wanted to see what happened when the level changed.
---
Before going to sleep, Kai stepped outside.
The night air was cooler than usual.
He could hear insects from the trees.
Somewhere nearby, a motorcycle passed before disappearing down the road.
Kai looked toward the dark field beyond the houses.
Tomorrow, he would leave Nueva Vizcaya.
He would travel farther than he had for football before.
He would meet players he didn't know.
Teams he had never faced.
And people who might be watching.
That last thought stayed with him.
He wasn't afraid.
But his stomach felt tight.
He told himself it was just another tournament.
He didn't believe it.
Kai looked down at his hands.
Then smiled.
Good.
Maybe being nervous meant he cared.
---
The alarm rang at 4:45 AM.
Kai opened his eyes.
For a few seconds, he didn't remember why.
Then he saw the packed bag beside his bed.
Tuguegarao.
He sat up.
The house was still dark.
He dressed quietly.
When he stepped into the living room, Daniel was already awake.
His father handed him a packed meal.
"Eat later."
Kai took it.
"Thanks."
Maria appeared from the kitchen.
"Be careful."
"I will."
Sofia was still asleep on the couch.
Kai walked over.
She opened one eye.
"You're leaving?"
"Yeah."
She sat up slowly.
"Come back."
Kai smiled.
"I will."
She held out her fist.
Kai bumped it with his.
"Good luck, Kuya."
"Thanks."
He picked up his bag.
Then looked around the house one last time.
Nothing had changed.
And somehow, everything had.
---
At 5:27 AM, the school gates were already crowded.
Buses waited outside.
Teachers checked names.
Athletes carried bags toward the loading area.
Belle stood near the media group, camera hanging around her neck.
She spotted Kai.
"You're early."
Kai looked at the time.
"Two minutes."
Belle smiled.
"Rafael will be proud."
Kai looked around.
"Where is he?"
Belle pointed toward the gate.
Rafael came running.
Again.
His bag bounced against his back.
Coach Ramirez looked at him.
"Don't."
Rafael stopped.
"I know."
Leo shook his head.
"Just get on the bus."
Rafael climbed aboard.
Miguel followed.
Jared came after him.
Kai looked toward the bus.
Then at Belle.
She raised her camera.
Click.
Kai smiled.
"Did you just take a picture?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Belle lowered the camera.
"Because this is the beginning."
Kai looked toward the bus.
Beyond the windows were his teammates.
Behind them stood teachers, coaches, and athletes from different sports.
The school was sending them toward something bigger.
Kai adjusted the strap of his bag.
Then stepped onto the bus.
He didn't know what waited in Tuguegarao.
He only knew one thing.
This time, he wasn't chasing an impossible dream anymore.
He was chasing the next level.
And the road had finally begun.
