Chapter 47: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead
The next few days passed quickly.
Too quickly for Kai.
The championship medal was still hanging from the corner of his desk, but his attention had already moved somewhere else.
Tuguegarao.
CAVRAA.
A regional competition.
It sounded different from the school tournament.
Bigger.
Farther.
And, according to Coach Ramirez, much less forgiving.
Kai tightened the laces on his boots before training.
The morning air in Nueva Vizcaya was cool, carrying the smell of damp grass from the field.
He stood up.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Rafael.
Rafael: You awake?
Kai stared at it.
Kai: Obviously.
A few seconds later—
Rafael: Good. Don't be late.
Kai frowned.
Kai: You're the one who's always late.
Rafael: Growth.
Kai laughed under his breath.
Apparently, Rafael had started stealing Coach Ramirez's words.
He slipped his phone into his pocket and left.
---
The field was already busy when Kai arrived.
Miguel was stretching near the sideline.
Jared was doing short sprints.
Enzo was helping carry several bags of footballs from the equipment room.
Coach Ramirez stood near the halfway line with a clipboard.
Assistant Coach Leo was beside him.
Leo glanced at Kai.
"You're early."
Kai looked at his watch.
"Two minutes."
"Still early."
Kai smiled.
"Where's Rafael?"
Leo pointed toward the gate.
Everyone turned.
Rafael came running through it.
His shirt was untucked.
His bag was hanging from one shoulder.
He stopped in front of Coach Ramirez and tried to catch his breath.
"I'm here."
Ramirez looked at him.
"You're late."
"By thirty seconds."
"Forty."
Rafael checked his phone.
"...That's unfair."
Leo laughed.
"You argued with the clock."
"I thought it was broken."
Miguel shook his head.
Kai tried not to laugh.
Coach Ramirez closed his clipboard.
"Warm up."
Rafael immediately jogged away.
"Yes, Coach."
---
The first twenty minutes were simple.
Passing.
Movement.
First touch.
Short sprints.
Nothing dramatic.
But the intensity was different.
Coach Ramirez stopped the drill several times.
"Again."
"Faster."
"Don't admire your pass."
"Move after you release it."
Leo moved between the players, correcting their positioning.
Kai received the ball from Miguel.
One touch.
Return.
Move.
Miguel passed again.
Kai turned.
Rafael was already making a run.
Kai played the ball into space.
Rafael reached it.
"Better!"
Leo shouted.
Rafael grinned.
"I know."
Leo immediately replied.
"Don't get comfortable."
Rafael's smile disappeared.
"Why does everyone say that?"
Kai laughed.
---
After the passing drill, Coach Ramirez called the team together.
Everyone gathered around him.
Leo stood beside the coach.
Ramirez looked at the players.
"You've had several days to celebrate."
Rafael raised his hand.
"Not enough."
Ramirez ignored him.
"The tournament in Tuguegarao will be different."
The joking stopped.
Coach continued.
"This isn't simply another school tournament."
"It's a regional competition."
"You'll see teams that have trained together for years."
"Some will have better facilities."
"Some will have stronger players."
"And some will have players who are already being watched."
Kai listened carefully.
That last sentence caught his attention.
Players being watched.
He glanced toward Leo.
The assistant coach noticed.
But said nothing.
Ramirez continued.
"That's not something to fear."
"It's something to understand."
He pointed toward the field.
"You don't need to prove that you're better than everyone."
"You need to prove that you belong."
Kai felt his fingers tighten slightly.
Coach's words stayed with him.
Belong.
That was different from winning.
---
Leo stepped forward.
"One more thing."
Everyone looked at him.
"The CAVRAA delegation won't be only football."
Jared frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Different sports."
Leo counted on his fingers.
"Athletics. Basketball. Volleyball. Swimming. Badminton. Table tennis. And others."
Rafael looked around.
"So we're all traveling together?"
"Most of the delegation will be."
Rafael smiled.
"That sounds fun."
Leo gave him a look.
"Until you realize you'll be sharing a bus."
Rafael's smile disappeared.
"With everyone?"
"Yes."
"How many?"
Leo checked the papers.
"A lot."
Rafael looked at Kai.
"We're doomed."
Kai laughed.
"We survived a championship final."
"That's different."
"How?"
"There weren't fifty people talking behind me."
Miguel walked past.
"There will be more than fifty."
Rafael stared at him.
"Thank you, Miguel."
---
Later that afternoon, the school gym was filled with activity.
The CAVRAA delegation was beginning to take shape.
Teachers moved between tables.
Athletes from different sports gathered for registration.
Some carried basketballs.
Others had volleyball bags.
A group of runners stood together near the entrance.
Several students wore school jackets with their names printed across the back.
Kai stood near the football group while Coach Ramirez checked their documents.
Leo was beside him.
"Passport-sized photo?"
Kai handed it over.
"Medical clearance?"
"Here."
"School ID?"
Kai reached into his bag.
"Here."
Leo checked everything.
"Good."
Rafael leaned over.
"Did you bring your brain?"
Kai looked at him.
"No."
"Good. I thought I was the only one who forgot mine."
Leo sighed.
"Both of you."
Miguel walked over.
"Are we done?"
"Almost."
Leo looked at the list.
Then stopped.
"Belle?"
Everyone looked around.
Belle was sitting near the media table, organizing photographs on her laptop.
She looked up.
"Yes?"
"Your documents."
Belle immediately stood.
"Coming."
Rafael whispered to Kai.
"She's more organized than all of us."
Kai nodded.
"Definitely."
Belle heard them.
"I heard that."
Rafael smiled.
"Compliment."
"Sure."
---
Belle had been given a school media jacket.
It wasn't anything fancy.
Just a dark jacket with the school emblem on the chest and a small STUDENT MEDIA label underneath.
She adjusted the strap of her camera.
The school had officially assigned her to document the delegation.
Not just the football team.
The entire trip.
Training.
Travel.
Other athletes.
Opening activities.
Matches.
And, if possible, the final.
Her parents wouldn't be traveling with her.
Neither would Kai's family.
The distance was too far, and the trip would last several days.
But Belle wasn't bothered.
She had already told her family they could follow the school's Facebook updates.
And if the football matches were streamed, they could watch from home.
Her mother had simply told her:
"Take good pictures."
Belle had smiled.
"I will."
---
That evening, Kai's family gathered around the dining table.
Daniel listened while Kai explained the travel plans.
"So the whole delegation goes together?"
Kai nodded.
"Mostly."
Maria placed another serving of rice on Sofia's plate.
"And you'll be there for several days?"
"Probably."
Sofia looked disappointed.
"Who's going to bring me to school?"
Kai stared at her.
"Mom and Dad?"
"But you're usually the one."
Daniel chuckled.
"You'll survive."
Sofia crossed her arms.
"I'm not sure."
Kai laughed.
"I'll bring you something back."
"Something from Tuguegarao?"
"Yeah."
"What?"
Kai thought for a second.
"I don't know yet."
Sofia immediately smiled.
"Then I'll decide."
Kai narrowed his eyes.
"That's dangerous."
"I want food."
Maria laughed.
Daniel shook his head.
"Just bring her something she can't finish in one sitting."
Sofia protested.
"I can finish anything."
Kai looked at her.
"That's exactly the problem."
---
Later that night, Kai stood outside the house.
The neighborhood was quiet.
A few insects chirped in the darkness.
He looked up at the sky.
The championship had already begun to feel distant.
Only a week ago, he had been chasing the biggest dream he had ever had.
Now another tournament was waiting.
He didn't know what kind of players he would face.
He didn't know how strong the other teams were.
He didn't know if he would even stand out.
And strangely...
That uncertainty felt good.
It meant there was something new to discover.
His phone vibrated.
Another message.
Belle: Don't forget your camera interview tomorrow.
Kai frowned.
Kai: What interview?
The reply came almost immediately.
Belle: Coach said I need a short player introduction for the delegation documentary.
Kai stared at the screen.
Kai: Do I have to?
Belle: Yes.
Kai: Why?
Belle: Because you're one of the players people are interested in.
Kai slowly put the phone down.
He wasn't sure how he felt about that.
Before he could reply, another message appeared.
Belle: Don't worry. I'll make it easy.
Kai smiled.
Kai: Thanks.
Three dots appeared.
Belle: You're welcome, Number Eleven.
Kai shook his head.
"She still calls me that."
---
Across the province, in a quiet office, Arturo Villanueva opened his laptop.
The San Isidro championship video was still saved.
He played the winning goal again.
Not the finish.
The build-up.
The movement before the pass.
The way Kai waited for the defender.
The decision not to shoot immediately.
Arturo paused the video.
He wrote another note.
Decision-making under pressure — promising.
Then underneath it:
Next test: regional competition.
He leaned back.
The school tournament had answered one question.
Could Kai perform when the pressure became real?
Yes.
But Arturo had another question now.
Could he do it again?
Against stronger opponents?
Against players who had already faced regional competition?
Arturo closed the notebook.
"Let's see."
---
The next morning, Belle stood behind the camera.
Kai sat on a simple chair near the edge of the training field.
The sun had barely risen.
The field was still wet.
Belle adjusted the focus.
"Ready?"
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
She raised the camera.
"Name?"
"Kai Bendaño."
"Age?"
"Fifteen."
"Position?"
"Forward."
Belle paused.
"Why football?"
Kai looked toward the field.
He thought about it.
For once, he didn't have a quick answer.
"Because..."
He stopped.
Then smiled faintly.
"Because I want to see how far I can go."
Belle lowered the camera slightly.
She smiled.
"That's good."
Kai looked at her.
"Really?"
"Yeah."
She raised the camera again.
"Say it again."
Kai laughed.
"No."
"Why?"
"Because you already have it."
Belle smiled behind the camera.
Click.
The recording continued.
Behind them, Coach Ramirez's whistle sounded.
"Everyone on the field!"
Leo followed.
"Let's move!"
Rafael shouted from somewhere behind the goal.
"Wait for me!"
Miguel's voice came next.
"You're late again!"
Rafael yelled back.
"I'm coming!"
Kai laughed.
Belle kept recording.
The team was getting ready.
The trip was getting closer.
And for the first time, Tuguegarao no longer felt like a name on a document.
It felt like the next place where Kai would have to prove himself.
The road ahead was getting bigger.
And this time...
he wouldn't be walking it alone.
