The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 46: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1.5: The Road Ahead

The championship was over.

But San Isidro High School had barely finished celebrating.

Three days after the final, the field looked almost ordinary again.

The temporary banners had been taken down. The chairs around the pitch were gone, and the white lines that had looked so sharp during the final were already beginning to fade beneath the morning sun.

Kai stood near the touchline, holding a football under one arm.

He looked toward the goal.

The same goal where his equalizer had gone in.

The same goal where, less than two minutes later, he had scored the winner.

For a moment, he could almost hear the crowd again.

Then—

Click.

Kai turned.

Belle lowered her camera.

"You were staring."

"I was thinking."

"Same thing."

Kai shook his head.

"Why are you here this early?"

Belle adjusted the camera strap around her neck.

"Documenting."

"There's nothing happening."

She looked around the empty field.

"That's what you think."

Kai frowned.

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"Everything is worth documenting."

She raised the camera again.

Click.

Kai sighed.

"You really like that camera."

"I do."

"More than people?"

"Depends on the person."

Kai stared at her.

Belle smiled innocently.

"Relax."

Kai looked away, hiding a small smile.

---

Belle had been taking pictures long before the final.

During training.

During warm-ups.

On the bus.

In the locker room.

Even when Rafael was making faces behind Miguel during team meetings.

But after the championship, the school had started noticing her work.

Some of her photographs had been posted on the school's official Facebook page.

A few had been shared by local football pages.

And one photograph from the final—the moment Kai's winning goal crossed the line—had already been seen by thousands of people.

The school wanted more.

So when Coach Ramirez called the players together that afternoon, Belle was there too.

She sat near the edge of the field, camera resting on her lap.

Coach Ramirez looked around.

"Before we talk about training..."

Rafael whispered to Kai.

"That's never a good sign."

Kai almost laughed.

Coach continued.

"The school received an invitation."

Miguel's expression sharpened.

"From where?"

"Tuguegarao City."

The joking stopped.

Rafael leaned forward.

"Tuguegarao?"

Coach nodded.

"CAVRAA."

Kai had heard the name before.

The Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association.

It wasn't simply another football tournament.

CAVRAA brought together student-athletes from different parts of Cagayan Valley for different sports.

Football.

Basketball.

Volleyball.

Track and field.

Swimming.

Badminton.

Table tennis.

And many others.

Different divisions and participating cities would send their own athletes and delegations.

Coach looked around at them.

"This time, San Isidro will be part of the Nueva Vizcaya delegation."

The players exchanged glances.

Rafael slowly leaned back.

"So we're not just representing the school anymore."

Coach shook his head.

"Exactly."

He paused.

"You're representing Nueva Vizcaya."

The words settled over the group.

Kai looked toward the empty field.

Only a few days ago, they had been celebrating a school championship.

Now they were being asked to carry something much bigger.

Coach continued.

"And remember this."

His voice became firmer.

"CAVRAA isn't a football tournament."

Everyone listened.

"Football is only one part of it."

"There will be athletes from different sports, coaches, officials, and entire delegations arriving in Tuguegarao."

"You'll see athletes training for events you've probably never competed in."

"Different uniforms."

"Different schools."

"Different goals."

He closed the folder.

"But once you step onto that football field..."

"You represent us."

Kai nodded slowly.

Another tournament would have been easier to understand.

This felt different.

They weren't just going as San Isidro players anymore.

They were going as part of something larger.

---

Coach handed Belle a small folder.

"And you're coming too."

Belle blinked.

"Me?"

Coach nodded.

"You."

Rafael immediately grinned.

"Congratulations."

Belle looked at him.

"For what?"

"You're officially stuck with us."

"I was already stuck with you."

"Fair."

Coach continued.

"You're going as the school's student media representative for the delegation."

Belle opened the folder.

Inside were several pages.

Travel arrangements.

School requirements.

Team information.

Coverage assignments.

Her eyes moved quickly across the pages.

"So I document the matches?"

"The football matches, training sessions, team activities, and anything the school needs for its official coverage."

Belle nodded.

She looked at her camera.

Then back at Coach.

"I can do that."

"I know."

Rafael leaned toward Kai.

"She's going to document our entire lives."

Belle heard him.

"Probably."

Rafael immediately stopped talking.

Kai laughed.

---

Coach looked toward the players again.

"One more thing."

Everyone listened.

"Because the regional meet is farther away, not all parents will be able to travel."

Kai immediately thought of his family.

Coach continued.

"The school will provide updates through its official social media channels."

Rafael raised his hand.

"Like Facebook Live?"

"Yes."

Jared smiled.

"Then my mother can watch."

Miguel nodded.

"So can mine."

Kai didn't say anything.

But he was already imagining his family sitting at home with their phones in front of them.

Sofia probably shouting at the screen.

Maria telling her to lower the volume.

Daniel pretending he wasn't nervous.

Kai smiled to himself.

---

Belle noticed.

"What?"

Kai looked at her.

"What?"

"You smiled."

"I did?"

"Yeah."

"Nothing."

Belle narrowed her eyes.

"You're thinking about your family."

Kai looked down.

"Maybe."

Belle didn't tease him.

Instead, she lifted the camera.

Click.

Kai looked at her.

"Seriously?"

"That one was good."

"You didn't even ask."

"You were smiling."

"Delete it."

"No."

"Belle."

She laughed.

"You're going to need to get used to this."

Kai shook his head.

"Why?"

She pointed toward the folder.

"Because apparently I'm going with you."

Kai looked at the tournament documents again.

For some reason, the idea made the trip feel less unfamiliar.

---

That evening, Kai brought the news home.

Sofia nearly dropped her spoon.

"Tuguegarao?"

Kai nodded.

"Yes."

"CAVRAA?"

"Yeah."

"You're going there?"

"Looks like it."

"Are there lots of teams?"

"Lots of athletes."

"Are there other sports too?"

Kai nodded.

"Basketball. Volleyball. Track. Swimming. A lot."

Sofia's eyes widened.

"Will you be on TV?"

Kai laughed.

"Probably not."

"Facebook?"

"Maybe."

Sofia immediately looked at Daniel.

"Dad, can we go?"

Daniel didn't answer right away.

He looked at the calendar on the wall.

Then at Kai.

"We'll see."

Sofia's face fell.

"But I want to watch."

Maria smiled.

"If we can't go, we'll watch the livestream."

Sofia brightened.

"Really?"

Daniel nodded.

"Of course."

Kai sat down.

"You don't have to travel all the way there."

Daniel looked at him.

"Don't start."

Kai stopped.

His father continued eating as if the conversation was over.

Maria smiled quietly.

Sofia pointed her spoon at Kai.

"If you're on Facebook Live, I'm going to comment."

Kai groaned.

"Please don't."

"I will."

"What are you going to say?"

Sofia grinned.

"GO KUYA!"

Kai laughed.

"That's embarrassing."

"I don't care."

Daniel chuckled.

"She'll probably spam it."

"Definitely," Maria said.

Kai shook his head.

But he was smiling.

---

Later that night, Kai sat on the edge of his bed.

His medal rested on the desk.

The Golden Boot was beside it.

His old boots were underneath the chair.

He looked at them for a while.

The championship felt like it had happened weeks ago.

Yet only a few days had passed.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Belle.

Belle: Don't forget your passport-sized photos.

Kai frowned.

Kai: Why?

Belle: School requirements.

Kai: Oh.

Another message came.

Belle: Also bring extra clothes.

Kai: I know.

Belle: And don't forget your boots.

Kai looked at the pair under his chair.

Kai: Obviously.

Three dots appeared.

Belle: Good.

Then:

Belle: I still need pictures of you in Tuguegarao.

Kai smiled.

Kai: You already have hundreds.

Belle: Not enough.

He laughed quietly.

The conversation ended there.

---

The next morning, training started earlier than usual.

Coach Ramirez wanted the team to adjust.

The level in Tuguegarao would be different.

The players knew it.

Nobody needed to say it.

The first passing drill began.

Kai received the ball.

One touch.

Pass.

Move.

Receive again.

Rafael jogged beside him.

"Think we're ready?"

Kai glanced at him.

"I don't know."

Rafael looked surprised.

"You actually admitted it."

Kai shrugged.

"Doesn't mean I'm scared."

Miguel heard them.

"Good."

Rafael looked at him.

"What's good?"

"Knowing there's more to improve."

Rafael sighed.

"Why are you always serious?"

Miguel passed the ball.

"Because someone has to be."

Kai laughed under his breath.

Some things hadn't changed.

---

Near the fence, Belle adjusted the focus on her camera.

She watched the players move.

Then she looked at the field.

At the team.

At Kai.

She raised the camera.

Click.

She checked the photograph.

Kai was running toward the ball.

His teammates were behind him.

The morning sun was low enough to cast long shadows across the grass.

It wasn't a championship.

There were no crowds.

No commentators.

No medals.

Just another training session.

Belle smiled.

She took another picture.

This one felt different.

It wasn't a photograph of the champion.

It was a photograph of what came after.

And somewhere beyond Nueva Vizcaya...

Tuguegarao was waiting.
