The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 38: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

Tuesday morning came earlier than Kai wanted.

His alarm rang at 5:30.

He stared at the ceiling for a few seconds before reaching for his phone.

He almost went back to sleep.

Almost.

Then he remembered the final.

Kai sat up.

"Right."

He rubbed his face and got out of bed.

By the time he reached San Isidro High School, the sun was already rising above the buildings.

The football field was still quiet.

At least, most of it was.

Rafael was already sitting on one of the benches.

His school bag was on the ground.

His head was tilted backward, and his eyes were closed.

Kai stopped beside him.

"You're early."

Rafael opened one eye.

"Unfortunately."

Kai laughed.

"Why?"

"Because Coach is already here."

Kai looked toward the field.

Coach Ramirez stood near the center circle.

Assistant Coach Leo was beside him, arranging cones.

Rafael sighed.

"See?"

Kai smiled.

"Let's go."

"I was hoping you'd say we should go home."

"Not happening."

Rafael stood slowly.

"I knew I shouldn't have become a football player."

Kai laughed.

"You've been saying that for years."

"And I'm still right."

---

The training session started without much talking.

Coach Ramirez wasn't interested in celebrating the quarterfinal anymore.

The final was only a few days away.

There was no room for wasted time.

"Passing drill!"

The players moved into position.

Miguel Santos stood beside Rafael.

Jared Cruz took the position behind them.

Their goalkeeper, Enzo Navarro, stayed near the goal.

Coach Ramirez blew the whistle.

The ball moved.

One touch.

Pass.

Move.

Again.

The pace increased.

"Faster!" Coach Leo shouted.

The players moved quicker.

Kai received the ball near the sideline.

Immediately, two defenders closed him down.

He looked up.

For a moment, he considered taking them on.

Then he remembered the footage.

Gabriel didn't always fight through pressure.

Sometimes, he simply moved the ball.

Kai passed to Miguel.

Miguel returned it immediately.

Kai moved into the space behind the defenders.

Rafael was already running toward the middle.

Kai sent the ball forward.

Rafael reached it.

One touch.

Cross.

Jared finished.

"Good!"

Coach Ramirez blew the whistle.

The players stopped.

Coach walked toward Kai.

"Better."

Kai nodded.

Coach pointed toward the defenders.

"What happened?"

"They followed me."

"And what did you do?"

"Moved the ball."

"Exactly."

Coach turned toward the rest of the team.

"Remember that."

"If two players follow Kai, don't wait for him to solve the problem."

"Move."

"Make them pay for leaving space."

Miguel nodded.

"Understood, Coach."

Coach Ramirez blew the whistle again.

"Again."

---

The drill continued for almost an hour.

There were mistakes.

Bad passes.

Poor touches.

Players running into the wrong spaces.

Coach Ramirez stopped them whenever necessary.

But slowly, the movement became cleaner.

Kai noticed something.

The team wasn't simply preparing for North Central anymore.

They were becoming more comfortable playing without depending on him.

That was good.

Maybe that was exactly what they needed.

During the water break, Rafael sat beside Kai.

"You're thinking again."

Kai drank from his bottle.

"About what?"

"Your face."

Kai laughed.

"What about my face?"

"You make that serious face whenever you're thinking about football."

Miguel sat down beside them.

"He's probably thinking about Gabriel."

Rafael looked at Kai.

"Probably."

Kai shook his head.

"I'm thinking about our team."

Miguel smiled.

"Good."

Rafael leaned back.

"You know, before all this, we were just trying to survive the group stage."

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

"Now we're preparing for a final."

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Then Rafael smiled.

"Kind of crazy."

Kai looked toward the field.

"Yeah."

---

Wednesday afternoon was different.

Coach Ramirez brought a laptop into one of the classrooms.

The football team gathered around.

The curtains were closed.

The room became dark.

Leo started the video.

North Central Academy appeared on the screen.

The footage showed their quarterfinal against Holy Cross.

Kai watched carefully.

North Central moved the ball patiently.

They didn't rush.

They didn't panic when Holy Cross pressed them.

And then Kai saw him.

Gabriel.

Number ten.

He received the ball near midfield.

A defender approached.

Gabriel waited.

One second.

Then another.

The defender stepped closer.

Gabriel passed the ball wide.

Instead of standing there, he immediately moved forward.

His teammate returned the ball.

Gabriel took one touch and sent a pass between two defenders.

The attack continued.

Rafael leaned forward.

"That's the same thing Coach keeps making us practice."

Coach Ramirez nodded.

"Exactly."

The video continued.

This time, two defenders moved toward Gabriel.

He didn't force the play.

He passed backward.

Another North Central player moved into the open space.

The ball came back.

Gabriel was already in a better position.

Kai watched silently.

Coach Ramirez paused the video.

"What do you see?"

Nobody answered immediately.

Miguel finally spoke.

"He doesn't hold the ball too long."

Coach nodded.

"Good."

Jared added,

"He makes the defense move."

"Correct."

Rafael looked at Kai.

"And he doesn't seem to panic."

Kai nodded.

"He's patient."

Coach Ramirez looked at him.

"That's what makes him dangerous."

The coach restarted the video.

Gabriel received the ball again.

This time, he scored.

The room became quiet.

Leo paused the video.

"Two goals."

"One assist."

"Most of North Central's dangerous attacks passed through him."

He looked at Kai.

"But don't turn this into Gabriel versus Kai."

Kai nodded.

"It's North Central against San Isidro."

"Exactly."

Coach Ramirez closed the laptop.

"We don't need Kai to beat Gabriel."

"We need San Isidro to beat North Central."

Nobody argued.

---

That evening, Kai stayed at school for a little longer.

Most of his teammates had already gone home.

He returned to the field alone.

He didn't do anything complicated.

Just touches.

Receive.

Turn.

Pass.

Move.

He repeated it.

Again.

And again.

After a while, someone approached from behind.

"You know you can go home, right?"

Kai turned.

Miguel stood there with his bag.

"I know."

"So why are you still here?"

Kai shrugged.

"I wanted to practice."

Miguel looked at the empty field.

"You've changed."

Kai smiled.

"How?"

"Before, you'd stay here and practice shooting."

Kai looked at the goal.

"I still like shooting."

"I know."

Miguel smiled.

"But now you're practicing passing."

Kai laughed.

"Coach keeps telling me to."

"Maybe he's finally getting through to you."

Kai shook his head.

"Maybe."

Miguel picked up a ball.

"Come on."

"What?"

"Pass with me."

Kai smiled.

"Okay."

They spent the next twenty minutes passing the ball back and forth.

No coach.

No pressure.

No audience.

Just two teammates getting ready for the biggest match of their young lives.

---

Thursday morning, the school was already talking about the final.

Posters had been placed around the campus.

Students gathered around them during breaks.

SAN ISIDRO HIGH SCHOOL

VS

NORTH CENTRAL ACADEMY

CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

SATURDAY

Kai stopped in front of one.

Rafael appeared beside him.

"Looks serious."

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

Rafael stared at the poster.

"Remember when nobody expected us to get past the group stage?"

Kai smiled.

"We almost didn't."

"Exactly."

Rafael looked at him.

"And now we're here."

Kai nodded.

"One game."

"One game."

Rafael smiled.

"You ready?"

Kai thought about it.

"Almost."

"What's missing?"

Kai looked at the poster.

"Saturday."

Rafael laughed.

"Fair enough."

---

After lunch, Kai was walking toward the library when he heard someone call his name.

"Kai."

He turned.

Belle was standing near the stairs.

She had two books in her arms.

"Hey."

She smiled.

"You're avoiding everyone again."

"Maybe."

"Why?"

Kai looked toward the football poster.

"You know."

"The final?"

"Yeah."

Belle walked beside him.

"Are you nervous?"

Kai thought about it.

"A little."

Belle looked surprised.

"I thought you weren't scared of anything."

Kai laughed.

"I'm scared of losing."

"That's different."

"How?"

"You care."

Kai smiled.

"Of course I care."

Belle looked at him.

"Just don't let that make you forget everything."

Kai understood.

Before the tournament, he had only wanted to become better.

Now everyone was watching.

Students.

Teachers.

Opponents.

Maybe even people outside the school.

But underneath all of that, he was still the same player.

"I won't."

Belle smiled.

"Good."

They reached the library.

Before going inside, she looked at him.

"I'll be there Saturday."

Kai looked at her.

"You will?"

"Of course."

She smiled.

"I want to see the final."

Kai smiled back.

"Then I'll see you there."

---

Friday came faster than expected.

The final training session was short.

Coach Ramirez didn't want his players exhausted before the match.

After the warm-up, he gathered them near the center circle.

Everyone was quiet.

Coach looked around.

"Tomorrow, you won't have another training session."

Nobody moved.

"You won't have another chance to fix a mistake."

"You won't have another match to recover from a bad performance."

He paused.

"That's what a final is."

Rafael swallowed.

Coach continued.

"But don't be afraid of it."

"Play."

"Communicate."

"Trust the person beside you."

He looked toward Kai.

"And if they mark you with two players?"

Kai answered,

"We use the space."

Coach smiled.

"Good."

He looked at Miguel.

"And if Kai is covered?"

Miguel nodded.

"We move the ball."

"Good."

He looked at Rafael.

"And if you get the chance?"

Rafael grinned.

"I shoot."

Everyone laughed.

Coach shook his head.

"At least he's honest."

The tension disappeared for a moment.

Then Coach Ramirez became serious again.

"Tomorrow isn't about one player."

"It's about all of you."

He pointed toward the San Isidro badge on his shirt.

"You earned this final together."

"Now finish it together."

---

Training ended before sunset.

The players slowly packed their bags.

Some joked.

Some stayed quiet.

Others just sat on the grass.

Rafael dropped beside Kai.

"I'm going to miss this."

Kai looked at him.

"The training?"

"Maybe."

He looked toward the field.

"This tournament."

Kai nodded.

"Me too."

Miguel joined them.

"Don't talk like we're already losing."

Rafael laughed.

"I'm not."

He looked at Kai.

"I'm just saying."

The three sat quietly.

For once, nobody needed to say anything else.

---

Across town, inside a small café, Arturo Villanueva closed his laptop.

He had spent most of the afternoon reviewing footage.

San Isidro.

North Central.

Both teams.

But his notes kept returning to one name.

Kai Bendaño.

Arturo flipped through several pages.

Kai's first matches had been simple.

Raw.

Inconsistent.

But the improvement was becoming difficult to ignore.

He stopped at the notes from the quarterfinal.

Two goals.

Better positioning.

Improved decision-making.

More willing to pass.

Arturo leaned back.

"The kid is learning."

His phone vibrated.

A message from one of his contacts appeared.

Final tomorrow.

Arturo looked at the message.

Then at Kai's name.

He smiled faintly.

"Let's see what he does when the pressure is real."

He closed the notebook.

He wasn't ready to make a decision yet.

One match could change a player's reputation.

And Arturo wanted to see Kai in the biggest moment before deciding what came next.

---

That evening, Kai sat outside his house.

The football rested beside his chair.

His Player of the Match plaque was inside.

Sofia had asked several times if she could sleep with it.

His answer had remained the same.

"No."

His father walked outside and sat beside him.

"Tomorrow."

Kai nodded.

"Yeah."

Daniel looked at him.

"How are you feeling?"

Kai took a moment.

"Nervous."

His father smiled.

"Good."

Kai looked at him.

"Good?"

"It means you understand that the match matters."

Kai smiled slightly.

Daniel continued.

"Just remember something."

"What?"

"You don't have to play perfectly."

Kai listened.

"You'll make mistakes."

"You'll lose the ball."

"You might miss a chance."

"Maybe you'll make the wrong decision."

Kai nodded.

"But don't let one mistake become two."

Kai looked down.

"Keep playing."

"Exactly."

Daniel stood.

"That's football."

He walked toward the house.

Kai remained outside.

The night was quiet.

A few houses nearby had their lights on.

Somewhere in the distance, a tricycle passed down the road.

Kai looked at the football beside him.

Then a faint blue light appeared.

[Football Legacy System]

Final Match: Tomorrow

Opponent: North Central Academy

Match Status: Pending

Kai stared at the screen.

Another line appeared.

[Primary Objective]

Win.

No rewards.

No new ability.

No shortcut.

Just one word.

Kai smiled.

"Tomorrow."

The blue window disappeared.

He picked up the ball and stood.

For a few seconds, he thought about Gabriel.

The player everyone was talking about.

The calm midfielder.

The scorer.

The creator.

The player who had already proven himself.

Kai wasn't going to pretend he was better.

Not yet.

Maybe tomorrow he would find out.

He looked toward the dark sky.

"Let's play."

Then he walked inside.

Tomorrow, there would be no more preparation.

No more footage.

No more drills.

No more waiting.

Just San Isidro against North Central.

One field.

One trophy.

And ninety minutes to decide everything.
