Chapter 37: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
Monday morning came quietly.
At least, that was what Kai expected.
It didn't stay quiet for long.
The moment he stepped through the gate of San Isidro High School, he realized something was different.
Students were already looking at him.
Some whispered to each other.
Others smiled when he passed.
A few even raised their hands.
"Morning, Kai!"
"Good game!"
"Nice goals!"
Kai returned the greetings with a small smile.
"Thanks."
He kept walking.
Then someone shouted from behind him.
"PLAYER OF THE MATCH!"
Kai stopped.
He slowly turned around.
Rafael stood near the school entrance, laughing.
Miguel was beside him, shaking his head.
Kai sighed.
"Seriously?"
Rafael walked toward him.
"Why? It's your title now."
"It was one game."
"One game where you scored twice."
Miguel joined them.
"And won Player of the Match."
Kai looked at both of them.
"You two are going to keep doing this all day, aren't you?"
Rafael smiled.
"Probably."
Miguel nodded.
"Definitely."
Kai shook his head and continued walking.
The two followed him.
---
The hallway was already crowded.
Normally, Kai would have gone straight to his classroom.
Today, he barely made it halfway.
A group of younger students stopped him.
"Kuya Kai!"
Kai looked at them.
"Yeah?"
"Can we get a picture?"
Kai blinked.
"A picture?"
One of the students lifted a phone.
"Please?"
Kai looked toward Miguel.
Miguel immediately stepped away.
"Don't look at me."
Rafael laughed.
"You're on your own."
Kai sighed.
"Fine."
The students quickly gathered around him.
One picture.
Then another.
"Thank you!"
"Good luck in the final!"
Kai froze for a second.
"The final?"
The students looked at one another.
"Didn't you hear?"
Kai frowned.
"No."
One of them smiled.
"North Central won yesterday."
Kai's expression changed.
"Against Holy Cross?"
"Yes."
"North Central won."
Rafael's smile slowly disappeared.
Miguel looked at Kai.
"So..."
Kai nodded slightly.
"North Central."
The students thanked him again before running off.
Kai remained still for a moment.
The name stayed in his head.
North Central Academy.
The Group B champions.
And more importantly...
Gabriel.
---
Inside the classroom, things weren't much better.
The moment Kai entered, several classmates started clapping.
Kai stopped near the door.
"What is this?"
Their classmate at the front laughed.
"Celebration."
"For what?"
"Don't act innocent."
Someone pointed toward him.
"Two goals!"
Another voice followed.
"Player of the Match!"
Then someone shouted from the back.
"And we're playing North Central in the final!"
The classroom erupted again.
Kai shook his head.
"You guys already know?"
"Everyone knows!"
Rafael dropped into his seat.
"I guess we're the last people to find out."
Miguel looked at Kai.
"Not exactly."
Kai sat down.
"What do you mean?"
Miguel leaned closer.
"Coach probably already knows."
Rafael turned around.
"Coach always knows before everyone else."
Kai smiled.
"True."
But his thoughts were somewhere else.
North Central.
Gabriel.
The player he had only seen from a distance.
The player everyone described as calm.
Strong.
Difficult to read.
Now there was no possibility of meeting him later.
There was no semifinal.
No second step.
The next match was the final.
---
The first class passed slowly.
The teacher continued with the lesson, but football kept appearing in conversations whenever she turned toward the board.
During the break, Miguel leaned toward Kai.
"So..."
"You've seen them before, right?"
Kai nodded.
"North Central?"
"Yeah."
"Only from the group stage."
Rafael turned around from the seat in front.
"I watched their quarterfinal yesterday."
Kai looked at him.
"You did?"
Rafael nodded.
"North Central destroyed Holy Cross."
Miguel frowned.
"How bad?"
Rafael thought for a moment.
"They barely gave Holy Cross a chance."
Kai became more attentive.
"Who scored?"
Rafael looked at him.
"Gabriel."
"How many?"
"Two."
Miguel raised an eyebrow.
"Two goals?"
Rafael nodded.
"And he assisted the other one."
Kai became quiet.
Rafael continued.
"He was everywhere."
"He dropped into midfield."
"He carried the ball forward."
"He created chances."
"And whenever Holy Cross tried to press him..."
"He just played around it."
Miguel whistled softly.
"So he's that good."
Rafael nodded.
"Yeah."
Kai looked out the window.
He remembered the first time he had watched Gabriel.
The calm expression.
The way he moved without wasting energy.
The way his teammates seemed to trust every decision he made.
Kai slowly clenched his hand.
"So that's who we're facing."
---
At lunch, the football team gathered near the covered court.
The players were eating together.
Normally, there would have been jokes.
Today, everyone was talking about one thing.
North Central.
The goalkeeper placed his food down.
"I watched their quarterfinal."
Rafael looked at him.
"And?"
"They're strong."
Miguel nodded.
"We already knew that."
"No."
The goalkeeper shook his head.
"You don't understand."
"They were different."
Everyone became quiet.
He continued.
"Holy Cross tried pressing them early."
"North Central didn't panic."
"They just moved the ball."
"And Gabriel..."
He paused.
"That guy is a problem."
Rafael smiled slightly.
"That's what I said."
Kai continued eating quietly.
Miguel looked at him.
"You okay?"
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
"You look serious."
"I'm thinking."
"About Gabriel?"
Kai looked at him.
"About the whole team."
Miguel smiled.
"Good."
Rafael raised his cup.
"So..."
"To the final?"
The players looked at one another.
Kai raised his cup.
"To the final."
Everyone followed.
"To the final!"
There were no jokes this time.
No one needed them.
The quarterfinal was over.
There was only one match left.
One opponent.
One trophy.
---
After lunch, Kai walked toward the library.
He needed somewhere quiet.
The hallway was still noisy, and he wanted a few minutes without football conversations.
As he reached the library entrance, he heard a familiar voice.
"Kai."
He turned.
Belle stood a few steps behind him.
She was holding two books against her chest.
"Hey."
Belle smiled.
"Trying to escape?"
Kai laughed.
"Is it that obvious?"
"A little."
She walked beside him.
"Everyone's talking about the final."
Kai nodded.
"I heard."
"North Central?"
"Yeah."
Belle looked at him.
"You've played them before?"
"No."
"But you've seen them."
"A little."
She nodded.
"Are they strong?"
Kai thought about it.
"Very."
Belle waited.
"And Gabriel?"
Kai looked at her.
"You know about him?"
"Everyone does."
Kai smiled slightly.
"Apparently."
Belle studied his face.
"You're worried."
Kai shook his head.
"Not worried."
"Then what?"
"Curious."
"About?"
"What it'll be like playing against someone everyone already thinks is the best player in the tournament."
Belle smiled.
"Maybe that's exactly what you wanted."
Kai laughed softly.
"Maybe."
They walked into the library.
The noise from the hallway disappeared behind them.
Belle placed her books on a table.
"You know..."
Kai looked at her.
"You don't have to beat Gabriel."
"I know."
"You just have to help your team win."
Kai smiled.
"That's what my coach would say."
"Then your coach is smart."
Kai nodded.
"He is."
Belle picked up one of her books.
"And don't change just because he's your opponent."
Kai looked down at the table.
"I won't."
Belle smiled.
"Good."
She paused before adding,
"I'll be there."
Kai looked up.
"For the final?"
She nodded.
"Of course."
Kai smiled.
"Thanks."
Belle smiled back.
"Good luck, Kai."
"Thanks."
---
After classes ended, the football team gathered on the field.
Coach Ramirez was already waiting.
Assistant Coach Leo stood beside him with a folder.
The players formed a line.
Coach Ramirez looked at everyone.
"First..."
"Congratulations."
The players smiled.
"You earned your place in the final."
He paused.
"But don't celebrate yet."
The mood became serious.
Coach Ramirez looked toward the scoreboard.
"North Central defeated Holy Cross."
He turned back to the players.
"That means our next match is the championship final."
Rafael quietly whispered,
"So we're really there."
Miguel nodded.
Coach Ramirez heard him.
"Yes."
"The final."
He let the words settle.
"One match."
"That's all that's left."
---
Assistant Coach Leo opened his folder.
"We watched North Central's quarterfinal this morning."
He placed several printed images on the tactics board.
The players gathered around.
Leo pointed toward the screen.
"North Central won convincingly."
"Holy Cross tried to press them."
"They handled it."
"They tried to defend deep."
"They still created chances."
Then Leo pointed toward one player.
Gabriel.
"Most of their attacks eventually go through him."
Kai stared at the image.
Gabriel stood near the center of the frame.
Calm.
Head up.
Watching the field.
Leo continued.
"Two goals."
"One assist."
"Almost every dangerous attack involved him."
Rafael nodded.
"That's what I saw."
Coach Ramirez stepped forward.
"But don't make the mistake of thinking this is Gabriel versus Kai."
He looked around.
"Football doesn't work that way."
Miguel nodded.
"It's North Central against San Isidro."
"Exactly."
Coach Ramirez pointed toward the board.
"If Gabriel receives the ball in dangerous areas..."
"We close him down together."
"If they send two players toward Kai..."
"We use the space they leave."
Kai nodded.
The plan was already beginning to take shape.
---
Coach Ramirez turned toward Kai.
"And one more thing."
Kai looked at him.
"Yes, Coach?"
"Don't try to prove you're better than Gabriel."
The players became quiet.
"Play your game."
"Make your decisions."
"Trust your teammates."
"And if the opportunity comes..."
"Take it."
Kai nodded.
"Understood."
Coach Ramirez smiled.
"Good."
---
Training that afternoon was lighter.
No intense full-match simulation.
Instead, Coach Ramirez focused on passing, movement, and quick decisions.
The team practiced escaping pressure.
They practiced switching play.
They practiced finding the open player when Kai attracted two defenders.
Again.
And again.
And again.
Every few minutes, Coach Leo stopped the drill.
"Faster!"
"Look before receiving!"
"Don't stare at the ball!"
"Move after passing!"
The players worked until the sun began to fall behind the school buildings.
When training finally ended, everyone was exhausted.
Rafael dropped onto the grass.
"I already hate the final."
Miguel laughed.
"You haven't even played it."
"Exactly."
Kai smiled.
"You'll survive."
Rafael looked at him.
"Easy for you to say."
Kai laughed.
---
That evening, Kai walked home.
The streets of San Isidro were busy as usual.
Tricycles passed along the road.
Small stores were beginning to turn on their lights.
Children were playing near the barangay court.
It felt normal again.
Kai liked that.
He walked slowly, carrying his school bag over one shoulder.
Then the familiar blue window appeared.
[Football Legacy System]
Tournament Progress
Quarterfinal: COMPLETE
Final: QUALIFIED
Next Opponent:
North Central Academy
The window changed.
[Opponent Analysis Available]
Kai stopped walking.
Another line appeared.
Gabriel
The name remained for several seconds.
Then:
[Threat Level: High]
[Primary Strengths Detected]
Ball Control
Decision Making
Vision
Finishing
Physical Balance
[Recommendation]
Adapt.
Kai stared at the screen.
No reward.
No sudden power.
No magical ability.
Just information.
Kai smiled faintly.
"So that's your evaluation."
The System disappeared.
Kai continued walking.
---
That evening, he sat outside the house after dinner.
The Player of the Match plaque rested on the table beside him.
Sofia had already asked several times if she could keep it.
He had refused every time.
His father stepped outside and sat beside him.
"You've been quiet."
Kai looked at the plaque.
"I'm thinking about the final."
Daniel nodded.
"North Central."
"Yeah."
"Gabriel?"
Kai looked at him.
"You know him?"
Daniel smiled.
"I've heard enough."
Kai looked surprised.
"From where?"
"People talk."
Daniel leaned back.
"But don't let his reputation play against you."
Kai nodded.
"I won't."
"Good."
His father looked toward the football resting near the wall.
"Remember what I told you."
"Find another way."
Kai smiled.
"Yeah."
"Football isn't about doing the same thing every match."
Daniel stood.
"Sometimes the strongest player on the field isn't the one who does the most."
Kai looked up.
"Then who is?"
"The one who makes the right decision when everyone else is under pressure."
Kai stayed quiet.
Those words stayed with him.
---
Across town...
Inside North Central Academy...
The training field was almost empty.
Most of the players had already left.
Only a few lights remained on.
Gabriel was still there.
He stood near the edge of the penalty area with a football at his feet.
His coach approached carrying the tournament bracket.
"San Isidro."
Gabriel looked at the paper.
"Number Eleven."
The coach nodded.
"Kai Bendaño."
Gabriel remained silent.
"He scored twice against San Pedro."
"I watched."
"He'll be one of our biggest threats."
Gabriel slowly rolled the ball beneath his boot.
"So will we."
The coach smiled faintly.
"You're confident."
Gabriel looked toward the empty goal.
"I'm not confident."
He paused.
"I'm prepared."
He kicked the ball.
It flew toward the corner of the net.
The goalkeeper wasn't there.
The ball struck the inside of the post and went in.
Gabriel turned back toward his coach.
"When is the final?"
"Saturday."
Gabriel nodded.
"Good."
He picked up another ball.
"Then we have time."
---
Back at the Bendaño house...
Kai stood in the backyard.
The night air was cool.
He placed the ball on the ground.
For a moment, he simply stared at it.
Then he started juggling.
Left foot.
Right foot.
Thigh.
Chest.
Back to the foot.
Nothing special.
Just repetition.
But his mind was already somewhere else.
North Central.
Gabriel.
The final.
The last match of the tournament.
Kai caught the ball and looked toward the dark sky.
"Let's see."
He smiled faintly.
"Who really is better?"
The ball dropped back into his hands.
The road to the final was over.
Now...
There was only the final itself.
And waiting at the other side of the pitch...
was Gabriel.
