Chapter 39: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
Saturday morning felt strangely normal.
Kai woke up before his alarm, but he didn't get out of bed right away.
He just lay there, staring at the ceiling.
For the past few days, the final had been the first thing on his mind whenever he woke up.
Now it was finally here.
He reached for his phone.
5:18 AM.
"Seriously?"
He had set his alarm for six.
Kai sat up and rubbed his eyes. Going back to sleep was probably impossible, so he got out of bed.
Downstairs, the smell of breakfast was already filling the house.
His mother looked over when he entered the kitchen.
"You're awake early."
"Couldn't sleep."
Maria smiled.
"Sit down. Eat first."
Kai took his seat.
There was rice, eggs, and dried fish on the table. The same kind of breakfast he had eaten countless times before.
Nothing special.
Somehow, that made him feel better.
Sofia came into the kitchen a few minutes later, still looking half-asleep.
She saw Kai and immediately remembered.
"Today is the final."
Kai smiled.
"Yeah."
"You're going to win, right?"
Kai looked at her.
"I'll try."
Sofia frowned.
"That's not what I asked."
Maria laughed.
"Let him eat."
Sofia ignored her.
"Say yes."
Kai shook his head, smiling.
"Okay. Yes."
"Good."
She walked away as if the matter had been settled.
Daniel entered a moment later and took the chair across from Kai.
He didn't ask about Gabriel.
He didn't ask about North Central.
He simply looked at his son.
"How are you feeling?"
Kai thought about it.
"Nervous."
Daniel nodded.
"That's normal."
"Are you nervous for me?"
His father smiled.
"A little."
Kai laughed.
"Thanks."
"Just don't forget to eat."
Kai looked down at his plate.
"I won't."
For the rest of breakfast, they didn't talk much.
Kai liked it that way.
---
By eight in the morning, San Isidro High School was already crowded.
The final would be held at the municipal football field, and students had started arriving in groups.
Some wore school shirts.
Some carried small flags.
A few had made handwritten signs with Kai's name on them.
When the San Isidro players arrived, the noise immediately picked up.
"Kai!"
"Good luck!"
"Let's go, San Isidro!"
Rafael stepped off the bus behind Kai and looked around.
"That's a lot of people."
Miguel followed.
"I told you the school was serious about this."
Rafael adjusted his bag.
"I thought you were joking."
Kai barely heard them.
His eyes were fixed on the field.
It looked different from the stands.
The grass was freshly cut.
The goalposts had been checked.
There were people moving around the sidelines, setting up cameras and chairs.
It was the same kind of field they had played on before.
But today, there were far more people watching.
Kai took a slow breath.
Rafael noticed.
"You okay?"
"Yeah."
"You don't look okay."
Kai looked at him.
"I'm fine."
Rafael smiled.
"Good enough."
They headed toward the changing room.
---
Inside, the mood was quieter.
Nobody was joking as much as usual.
Jared sat on one of the benches, tying his boots.
Enzo was checking his gloves.
Miguel had his headphones on.
Rafael kept standing up, sitting down, then standing again.
Kai noticed.
"You okay?"
Rafael looked at him.
"I'm fine."
"You've stood up three times."
"I forgot something."
"What?"
Rafael looked around.
"I don't know."
Kai laughed.
Rafael pointed at him.
"Don't start."
The door opened.
Coach Ramirez walked in.
The room became quiet.
He looked at the players for a few seconds.
"How's everyone feeling?"
"Good, Coach."
"Fine."
"Ready."
Rafael muttered, "Hungry."
A few players laughed.
Coach shook his head.
"At least you're honest."
He smiled briefly before becoming serious.
"You've already done something nobody expected you to do."
The room went quiet.
"But don't think about that today."
He looked around.
"You earned your place here. So play like you belong here."
Kai listened carefully.
"Don't chase the game."
"Don't rush because the crowd is loud."
"And don't try to win the match by yourself."
His eyes stopped on Kai for a moment.
Kai understood.
"Play our game," Kai said.
Coach nodded.
"Exactly."
He pointed toward the door.
"Let's warm up."
---
North Central was already on the field when San Isidro came out.
Kai recognized most of them from the footage.
They looked calm.
Short passes.
Light jogging.
Simple shooting drills.
Nothing dramatic.
Then he saw the number ten.
Gabriel.
He was near the center circle, receiving passes from one of his teammates.
His first touch was clean.
Pass.
Move.
Receive.
Pass again.
Kai watched for a few seconds before Rafael spoke beside him.
"That's him."
"Yeah."
"You've seen him before, right?"
"From the group stage."
Rafael nodded.
"He's good."
Kai smiled.
"That's what everyone keeps telling me."
Gabriel received another pass.
This time, he looked toward the San Isidro side.
His eyes found Kai.
They looked at each other for a moment.
Gabriel gave a small nod.
Kai returned it.
Then both went back to warming up.
Rafael stared at Kai.
"That's it?"
"What?"
"No dramatic stare?"
Kai laughed.
"What do you want me to do?"
"I don't know. Something."
"Save it for the game."
Rafael smiled.
"Fair."
---
Not far from the field, Arturo Villanueva sat in the covered stands.
He wasn't wearing a San Isidro shirt or anything connected to North Central.
Just a plain polo shirt and dark pants.
A notebook rested on his lap.
He had been following the tournament for several weeks, but today was the first time he had seen both teams preparing for the final in person.
He wrote down two names.
Kai Bendaño
Gabriel
He watched Kai for a while.
The boy didn't look like the player Arturo had seen during the early matches.
There was still something raw about him.
But he moved with more confidence now.
Arturo closed his notebook.
He would watch first.
Write later.
---
The referee called the teams together.
The crowd became louder.
Kai stood near the center circle with Rafael beside him.
Miguel was a few steps behind.
Across from them stood Gabriel and the North Central players.
The referee checked the captains and explained the final instructions.
Then the coin was tossed.
North Central chose their side.
San Isidro would start with the ball.
Kai looked around the field one last time.
He could hear the crowd.
Someone was shouting his name from the stands.
He took a breath.
The referee checked his watch.
The whistle sounded.
The final had begun.
---
Kai passed the ball back to Miguel.
North Central immediately moved into shape.
San Isidro didn't force anything.
Jared received the ball and passed it to Rafael.
Rafael tried to move forward, but North Central's midfielder stepped up.
He turned and played it back.
"Keep it!" Coach Ramirez shouted from the sideline.
The ball went from one player to another.
Kai dropped toward the left side to give Miguel an option.
The pass came.
He controlled it.
A North Central midfielder moved toward him.
Kai looked up.
There was space behind the defender, but another player was already moving across.
He could try to dribble through.
Instead, he passed back to Miguel.
The midfielder followed him for a few steps before returning to his position.
Kai moved again.
He was starting to understand what Coach had been talking about all week.
It wasn't always about beating the player in front of him.
Sometimes, moving was enough.
Miguel switched the ball toward the right.
Rafael received it and immediately pushed forward.
"Go!"
Rafael crossed.
A defender got there first and cleared it.
The ball went out.
Throw-in.
Rafael looked toward Kai.
"Not bad."
Kai nodded.
"Keep going."
---
The first ten minutes were cautious.
Neither team wanted to give away an early goal.
North Central had more possession, but San Isidro wasn't sitting completely back.
Whenever Gabriel dropped deep, Miguel or Jared stayed close enough to make things difficult.
They didn't man-mark him.
Coach Ramirez had made that clear.
Don't follow him everywhere.
Just don't give him easy space.
At the twelfth minute, Gabriel received the ball near the halfway line.
Miguel stepped toward him.
Gabriel turned his body and passed wide.
Then he continued his run.
The winger returned the ball.
Gabriel was already moving into space.
Kai noticed him.
"Watch ten!"
Jared shifted across.
Gabriel received again.
This time, two San Isidro players closed the passing lane.
He didn't force anything.
He played backward.
North Central kept possession.
Kai frowned.
They were patient.
Very patient.
It reminded him of the footage they had watched on Wednesday.
Gabriel wasn't trying to do everything himself.
He was simply making the right choice.
---
At seventeen minutes, San Isidro finally created a good chance.
Rafael won the ball near the right side and passed inside to Kai.
Kai took the ball on the move.
One defender was ahead.
Another was closing from his left.
He slowed down.
For a moment, he thought about shooting.
Then he saw Miguel running into the open space.
Kai passed.
Miguel returned the ball almost immediately.
The defender was caught between them.
Kai pushed forward.
He entered the edge of the box.
A defender stepped toward him.
Kai shifted the ball onto his right foot and shot low toward the far post.
The North Central goalkeeper got down quickly.
His hand reached the ball.
Save.
The crowd groaned.
Kai stopped and looked at the goalkeeper.
"Almost," Rafael said as he ran over.
Kai nodded.
"Yeah."
The goalkeeper threw the ball out.
North Central began another attack.
---
From the stands, Arturo made a note.
Doesn't force first option.
He watched the replay on the field in his head.
Kai had passed instead of taking on two defenders.
Then he had received the ball back and created the shot.
Arturo looked toward the North Central side.
Gabriel was already calling for the ball.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
---
The match became more physical after that.
Players started challenging harder.
There were small fouls.
The referee had to stop the game several times.
At the twenty-fourth minute, North Central nearly scored.
Gabriel received the ball just outside the penalty area.
Miguel closed him down.
Gabriel took a touch to his right.
Miguel followed.
Gabriel suddenly slipped a pass between two defenders.
Their winger ran onto it.
The cross came in.
Enzo stepped forward and caught the ball.
"Mine!"
He held it tightly against his chest.
"Good, Enzo!" Jared shouted.
Enzo quickly looked up.
Kai was already moving.
The goalkeeper threw the ball toward the left.
Kai controlled it near the halfway line.
Rafael was running down the right.
Kai passed.
Rafael accelerated.
The crowd came alive again.
North Central's defense dropped quickly.
Rafael crossed early.
Jared tried to reach it.
He couldn't.
The ball rolled across the box and went out.
Jared put his hands on his head.
"Sorry."
Rafael shook his head.
"Nothing."
Kai walked over.
"Next one."
---
The scoreboard still showed 0–0.
Thirty minutes gone.
Then thirty-five.
Then forty.
Neither side had broken through.
Kai was beginning to feel the pace in his legs.
He looked toward the sideline.
Coach Ramirez was calm.
No shouting.
Just watching.
Kai took a deep breath.
This wasn't like the group stage.
Every mistake felt heavier.
Every lost ball brought louder reactions from the crowd.
But the game itself hadn't changed.
Pass.
Move.
Look.
Decide.
He reminded himself of what his father had said.
One mistake shouldn't become two.
---
Just before halftime, Gabriel received the ball near the center.
Kai was close enough to see his face.
Calm.
Focused.
Gabriel looked left.
Then right.
He noticed Kai.
For a second, neither moved.
Then Gabriel passed the ball.
The attack went down the opposite side.
Kai turned and followed.
The referee blew his whistle a minute later.
Halftime.
San Isidro 0–0 North Central.
Kai walked toward the changing room with the rest of his teammates.
Rafael came up beside him.
"Still alive."
Kai laughed despite himself.
"Yeah."
Miguel joined them.
"They're tough."
Kai nodded.
"But so are we."
Miguel smiled.
"That's better."
Inside the changing room, Coach Ramirez waited until everyone had settled.
He didn't yell.
He simply pointed toward the board.
"You're doing fine."
The players listened.
"But we're making their job too easy in one area."
He drew a line across the board.
"Their midfield is comfortable."
Miguel nodded.
"We're giving them too much time."
"Exactly."
Coach looked toward Kai.
"And when you receive the ball?"
Kai waited.
"Keep moving after you pass."
Kai nodded.
"I will."
Coach looked around.
"We don't need to change everything."
"Just a few things."
He put the marker down.
"Stay patient."
"Keep talking."
"And when the chance comes..."
He looked at the players.
"Take it."
The players nodded.
Outside, the crowd was already getting louder.
The second half was about to begin.
