The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 36: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The final whistle had been blown for almost a minute, but the stadium was still loud.

The scoreboard remained unchanged.

SAN ISIDRO HIGH SCHOOL 2 – 0 SAN PEDRO NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The announcer's voice suddenly came through the speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, that brings us to the end of today's match. San Isidro High School takes the victory with a final score of two goals to nil!"

The San Isidro supporters immediately cheered.

Some players raised their hands toward the stands.

Others simply dropped onto the grass.

Kai stood near the center circle, breathing heavily.

His legs felt like they had been filled with sand.

Rafael walked past him and dropped onto the grass.

"I don't think my legs belong to me anymore."

Miguel laughed as he approached.

"You've been saying that for the last ten minutes."

"Because it keeps getting worse."

Kai smiled.

"You still had enough energy to shout after the second goal."

"That's different. Adrenaline."

Miguel shook his head.

"You were screaming louder than the supporters."

Rafael looked at Kai.

"You scored twice. You're not allowed to complain about me."

Kai raised both hands.

"I wasn't complaining."

"You were thinking about it."

"Maybe."

Rafael laughed.

Before they could continue, Coach Ramirez called from the sideline.

"Players! Line up!"

Rafael groaned.

"Already?"

Assistant Coach Leo looked at him.

"Yes, already. The match is over, not your responsibilities."

Rafael stood slowly.

"Coach Leo, I think I need medical attention."

Leo pointed toward the line.

"You need a handshake."

Miguel laughed.

"Come on."

---

Both teams formed two lines near the center circle.

The San Pedro players looked tired and disappointed.

Their captain stood at the front.

When the first San Isidro player reached him, they shook hands.

"Good game."

"Good game."

Some exchanged quick words.

Others simply nodded.

When Kai reached the San Pedro captain, the older boy looked at him for a moment before extending his hand.

"Two goals."

Kai shook his hand.

"Yeah."

"You were different in the second half."

Kai raised an eyebrow.

"What do you mean?"

"You stopped trying to beat everyone."

The captain smiled.

"You started making us chase you instead."

Kai thought about it.

"Coach told me to be patient."

"Your coach is right."

The captain released his hand.

"Good luck in the next round."

Kai nodded.

"You too."

The line continued.

By the time everyone had finished shaking hands, the atmosphere had become calmer.

The competition was still there.

But the match itself was finished.

---

The announcer spoke again.

"Before the players leave the field, we would like to recognize today's standout performer."

Kai looked toward the speakers.

Rafael immediately nudged Miguel.

"Here we go."

Miguel smiled.

"You know who it is."

Rafael pointed at Kai.

"Don't look so surprised when they call your name."

Kai shook his head.

"Stop."

The announcer continued.

"With two goals in today's match, our Player of the Match is San Isidro High School's number eleven..."

There was a short pause.

"Kai Bendaño!"

The crowd erupted.

Kai froze for half a second.

Then Rafael pushed him forward.

"Go!"

Miguel laughed.

"That's you!"

Kai walked toward the small presentation area near the sideline.

The announcer continued speaking while a staff member handed Kai a small plaque.

"Two goals, strong defensive work, and an excellent second-half performance helped San Isidro secure the victory today."

Kai accepted the plaque.

"Thank you."

The announcer smiled.

"Congratulations, Kai."

Kai nodded before stepping away.

The applause continued for a few seconds.

He looked toward the stands.

His father was clapping.

His mother was smiling.

Sofia was practically jumping.

Then Kai noticed someone else.

Belle.

She stood a few rows away from his family.

She was clapping too.

When their eyes met, she smiled.

Kai smiled back.

---

After the short ceremony, Kai returned toward his teammates.

Belle waited near the side of the field.

She wasn't wearing anything special.

Just her school uniform, with her bag hanging from one shoulder.

When Kai got closer, she looked at the plaque in his hand.

"So you're famous now?"

Kai laughed.

"Apparently."

Belle smiled.

"You looked like you wanted to disappear when they announced your name."

"I didn't know they were going to do that."

"You scored twice."

"That doesn't mean I wanted everyone shouting my name."

Belle tilted her head.

"You're funny."

Kai looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because you can run through defenders without being scared, but standing in front of a microphone makes you nervous."

Kai looked down at the plaque.

"Running is easier."

Belle laughed.

"That actually makes sense."

For a moment, neither spoke.

The stadium was still noisy around them, but it felt quieter where they stood.

Belle looked toward the scoreboard.

"Congratulations."

Kai nodded.

"Thanks."

"You played differently in the second half."

Kai looked at her.

"You noticed?"

"Of course."

She adjusted the strap of her bag.

"In the first half, every time you got the ball, you looked like you wanted to do everything yourself."

Kai smiled slightly.

"Was I that obvious?"

"Very."

"And the second half?"

"You started passing more."

Belle paused.

"Especially when two defenders were watching you."

Kai nodded.

"Coach told me that if two players follow me, someone else should be free."

Belle smiled.

"Looks like you finally listened."

Kai laughed.

"Finally?"

"Don't take it personally."

"I might."

She smiled.

"I'm just saying, you don't always have to be the one who scores."

Kai looked toward his teammates.

Rafael was arguing with Miguel about something near the bench.

The goalkeeper was talking to Coach Ramirez.

The rest of the team was slowly packing their bags.

Kai looked back at Belle.

"I think I'm starting to understand that."

Belle nodded.

"Good."

Then she looked at the plaque again.

"Still, two goals is two goals."

Kai smiled.

"You're not going to let me forget that, are you?"

"Absolutely not."

---

Sofia suddenly appeared beside them.

"Kai!"

Kai turned.

"What?"

She looked at Belle, then at Kai.

Then she smiled.

"You're talking to Belle."

Kai immediately understood where this was going.

"Yes."

Belle laughed.

"Hi, Sofia."

"Hi."

Sofia looked at Belle.

"Did you watch the whole game?"

Belle nodded.

"Most of it."

Sofia looked proud.

"He scored twice."

Belle smiled.

"I know."

Sofia pointed at Kai.

"And he gave our team the second goal."

Kai blinked.

"Wait. What?"

Sofia frowned.

"Not literally."

Belle laughed.

"I think she means you helped create the play."

Kai looked at his sister.

"You scared me."

Sofia giggled.

"Sorry."

Belle looked at Kai.

"Your sister is funny."

"She's usually worse."

"I heard that!"

Kai laughed.

---

Daniel called from behind them.

"Kai, we're ready."

Kai turned.

"Coming."

Belle stepped back.

"I'll let you go."

Kai nodded.

"Thanks for coming."

Belle smiled.

"I wouldn't miss the match."

Kai paused.

"Really?"

She shrugged.

"You played for the school. Of course I'd come."

There was nothing dramatic about the answer.

But Kai still smiled.

"See you tomorrow?"

Belle nodded.

"Tomorrow."

She turned and started walking toward the stands.

Kai watched her for a second.

Then Sofia grabbed his arm.

"Come on."

Kai looked down.

"What?"

"Mom said food."

Kai immediately turned.

"Why didn't you say that earlier?"

Sofia laughed.

---

Near the San Isidro bench, Coach Ramirez was speaking with Assistant Coach Leo.

Leo watched Kai walk toward his family.

"He handled the attention better than I expected."

Coach Ramirez nodded.

"He doesn't like it."

"That's probably good."

Coach Ramirez looked at him.

"Why?"

"Because players who enjoy attention too early sometimes start playing for it."

Coach Ramirez smiled.

"You're right."

Leo glanced toward the field.

"The second goal was more important than the first."

Coach Ramirez nodded.

"The first showed what he can do."

"The second showed that he's learning when to do it."

They watched Kai disappear toward the parking area.

Leo crossed his arms.

"Next match will be harder."

"It should be."

"Other teams will have footage now."

Coach Ramirez's expression became serious.

"Exactly."

Leo nodded.

"They'll know about his speed."

"And they'll try to take it away."

The two coaches fell silent.

The win had been good.

But they both understood what came next.

The moment a player became noticeable, every opponent started preparing for him.

---

Kai reached the family car.

Sofia climbed into the back seat with his Player of the Match plaque.

"Can I keep this?"

Kai looked at her.

"For tonight."

"Why only tonight?"

"Because it's mine."

Sofia hugged it.

"Then I'll guard it."

Maria laughed from the passenger seat.

"Just make sure you don't drop it."

Daniel opened the trunk.

"Put your bag here."

Kai handed it over.

Before getting into the car, he looked back toward the stadium one last time.

The field lights were still on.

Some players were still leaving.

Belle was walking toward the gate with a few classmates.

Kai watched her for a moment before getting inside.

---

The car started moving.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Kai rested his head against the window.

His entire body felt tired.

Sofia was still talking about the match.

"Your second goal was better."

Kai opened one eye.

"Why?"

"Because you waited."

Kai smiled.

"You noticed that?"

"Of course."

Maria looked back from the front.

"She watched the whole match."

Sofia nodded proudly.

"I know football."

Daniel laughed.

"Since when?"

"Since Kai started scoring."

Kai laughed.

"That's convenient."

Sofia crossed her arms.

"I've always known."

Daniel shook his head.

"Sure."

Kai smiled and closed his eyes again.

For a while, there was no pressure.

No scouts.

No System.

No next opponent.

Just his family talking inside the old car.

Then—

A faint blue glow appeared near the edge of Kai's vision.

He opened his eyes slightly.

The System appeared.

Quietly.

Almost like it had been waiting for the right moment.

[Football Legacy System]

Match Complete.

Performance Recorded.

Goals: 2

Assists: 0

Match Rating: 8.8

Decision Quality: Excellent

Team Contribution: Excellent

A second line appeared beneath it.

Growth Evaluation Updated.

Kai stared at it.

Then another message appeared.

New evaluation criteria will be applied in future matches.

Kai's expression changed slightly.

That was different.

The System wasn't giving him a reward.

It wasn't telling him to train.

It was simply recording what had happened.

And somehow, that felt more important.

Kai looked outside the window.

The stadium was already disappearing behind them.

He whispered quietly.

"So the next game will be different."

The blue window faded.

Nobody in the car noticed.

Kai leaned back again.

Tomorrow would be another training day.

And after today's performance...

he knew the next opponent wouldn't treat him like an unknown player anymore.

The game had changed.

And this time, Kai was ready for it.
