Chapter 35: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The locker room door opened, and Coach Ramirez stepped inside.
The players slowly looked up from their seats. Some were drinking water, while others were still trying to catch their breath after the first half.
Nobody needed to ask about the score.
It was already written on the small board near the wall.
San Isidro High School 1 – 0 San Pedro National High School
Coach Ramirez picked up the marker and looked at the scoreboard for a moment.
"We have the lead," he said.
Nobody celebrated.
The coach turned toward them.
"But don't play like we have already won."
The room became quiet.
"The first five minutes will tell us what kind of second half this is going to be."
He walked toward the tactics board and drew two arrows along San Pedro's wings.
"They're going to push higher. Their full-backs will come forward, and their midfielders will take more risks. They have no reason to sit back anymore."
Miguel nodded. "They'll have to."
"Exactly."
Coach Ramirez circled the center of the pitch.
"They need a goal. We don't."
He put the marker down.
"So don't give them what they want. Don't rush the ball just because you see an opening. If we have to pass backward, we pass backward. If we have to slow the game down, we slow it down."
Rafael leaned forward. "So we make them chase?"
"Yes. Make them work for every possession."
The coach's eyes moved across the room before finally stopping on Kai.
"And Kai."
Kai looked up. "Yes, Coach?"
"They'll be watching you."
"I know."
"Good. Then don't let that make you selfish."
Kai understood what he meant immediately.
"If they send two players at me..."
"Someone else is free," Coach Ramirez finished.
Miguel smiled. "Got it."
Coach Ramirez nodded. "Good."
He checked the time.
"Five minutes. Drink some water, fix your boots, and get ready."
He walked toward the door, but stopped before leaving.
"And one more thing."
Everyone looked at him.
"Forget the first half."
The door closed behind him.
For a few seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Rafael let out a long breath.
"That's easier said than done."
Miguel laughed quietly. "He's right, though. Whatever happened in the first half doesn't matter anymore."
Kai looked down and tightened his bootlaces.
"We still have forty-five minutes."
Rafael glanced at him.
"You sound like Coach."
Kai looked up with a small smile.
"Maybe I'm getting old."
Miguel laughed.
"You're fifteen."
"Exactly."
The three of them laughed, and for a moment, the pressure inside the room became lighter.
Then the sound of the crowd came through the walls.
The second half was waiting.
---
San Pedro started aggressively.
The moment the referee blew his whistle, their players pushed forward. Their right-back moved almost to the halfway line, while their left-back did the same on the opposite side. Their captain dropped deeper to collect the ball before immediately moving forward again.
San Isidro pulled into shape.
"Stay together!" Coach Ramirez shouted from the sideline.
Kai watched the right-back carefully.
The defender kept glancing toward him.
After what had happened before halftime, San Pedro clearly didn't want to give Kai another clean run behind the defense.
Kai didn't force one.
Instead, he drifted toward the center.
The right-back followed.
Miguel received the ball and looked toward Kai, but Kai didn't call for it. He continued moving inside, dragging the defender with him.
That left Rafael alone on the wing.
Miguel saw it.
He switched the ball.
Rafael received it with several meters of open space in front of him.
"Go!"
Rafael pushed forward, but the San Pedro left-back immediately moved across to close him down.
Rafael slowed instead of forcing the attack.
He looked back.
Miguel was already moving into position.
The pass went backward.
Miguel received it, took one touch, and moved the ball toward the other side.
Simple.
Patient.
Nothing spectacular.
But San Pedro had been forced to move again.
Kai watched their defensive line shift from one side to the other.
They were chasing.
That was exactly what Coach Ramirez wanted.
---
The next ten minutes became increasingly physical.
Every challenge seemed harder than the one before. Players were beginning to feel the heat, and the grass was becoming slippery under their boots.
Kai had already made several defensive runs.
His legs were starting to feel heavy, but he kept moving.
San Pedro's captain received the ball near the edge of the penalty area.
Miguel stepped forward to close him down.
The captain shifted left.
Miguel followed.
Then, without warning, the San Pedro captain slipped a pass through the middle.
Their striker was already running.
"Watch him!"
The striker took the ball inside the box and shot low toward the near post.
The San Isidro goalkeeper reacted quickly, dropping down and getting both hands to the ball.
But he couldn't hold it.
The rebound rolled loose.
Kai reacted before anyone else.
He sprinted toward it and swung his boot, sending the ball out of danger.
It flew over the sideline.
Throw-in.
Kai bent forward with both hands on his knees, breathing heavily.
Miguel jogged over.
"Good clearance."
Kai shook his head.
"That was too close."
Miguel glanced toward the San Pedro players.
"Yeah."
Their confidence was growing.
They knew the equalizer was possible.
And San Isidro knew they couldn't relax.
---
At the 61st minute, San Isidro finally found another opening.
Miguel intercepted a pass in midfield and immediately looked forward.
Kai was already wide.
The San Pedro right-back had pushed high again.
There was space behind him.
Miguel passed.
Kai took his first touch forward and accelerated.
The defender turned and chased after him.
Kai pushed the ball ahead, keeping it close enough to reach but far enough to maintain his speed.
One step.
Two.
Three.
The defender was catching up.
Kai glanced toward the middle.
Rafael was running into the box.
Miguel was following behind.
The center-back had already started moving across to cover.
For a moment, Kai could have tried to shoot.
Instead, he passed toward Rafael.
Rafael controlled the ball just inside the box, but a defender immediately closed him down.
He returned the pass.
Kai reached it near the edge of the area.
The goalkeeper stepped forward.
Kai shaped his body as if he was going to shoot.
The goalkeeper prepared for it.
At the last moment, Kai passed across the face of goal.
Miguel arrived.
He struck the ball first time.
The shot was heading toward the corner, but the goalkeeper stretched out a hand and managed to get his fingertips to it.
The ball went wide.
Corner.
Miguel grabbed his head.
"So close."
Kai walked toward him.
"Good shot."
Miguel looked at him and smiled.
"You could've taken it yourself."
"You were open."
Miguel nodded.
"Fair enough."
---
Rafael took the corner.
The ball curled toward the near post, but a San Pedro defender jumped and headed it away.
It dropped outside the box.
Kai controlled it and immediately saw a defender rushing toward him.
His first instinct was to take the defender on.
He stopped himself.
Instead, he passed back to Miguel.
Miguel switched the play.
Rafael received again and crossed toward the far post.
A San Isidro player connected with the header.
The goalkeeper saved.
San Pedro cleared.
The crowd applauded anyway.
San Isidro were creating chances.
More importantly, they weren't panicking.
They were playing the match instead of chasing it.
---
Then San Pedro nearly punished them.
A loose pass in midfield fell to their captain.
He turned immediately.
Three blue shirts sprinted forward.
Their right-back was already charging down the wing.
Kai turned and chased back.
"Back!" Miguel shouted.
The captain passed wide.
Their winger took one touch, then another.
Rafael was behind him.
The winger crossed.
The ball sailed toward the far post.
Their striker jumped and connected with a header.
The goalkeeper moved across.
The ball struck the post.
CLANG!
The entire stadium seemed to freeze.
The rebound bounced across the goalmouth.
Nobody reached it.
The goalkeeper finally dropped on top of the ball.
A huge cheer came from the San Isidro supporters.
Rafael bent over, hands on his knees.
"That was too close."
Kai nodded.
"Very."
Miguel looked at the scoreboard.
"Seventy-two."
He took a breath.
"Still plenty of time."
Kai looked toward San Pedro's defense.
Their full-backs were now pushing even higher.
Their midfielders were joining attacks more often.
The spaces behind them were becoming larger.
Kai glanced at Miguel.
Miguel had noticed the same thing.
Neither needed to say anything.
---
Five minutes later, San Isidro won the ball again.
Miguel received it near the halfway line.
Kai started running.
The right-back immediately followed.
Kai kept going.
The defender followed him.
Miguel didn't pass.
Kai suddenly stopped.
The defender took another step before realizing what had happened.
Miguel switched the ball to Rafael.
Rafael was completely free.
He carried it forward as the San Pedro left-back rushed toward him.
Rafael cut inside.
Miguel joined the attack.
Kai started running again.
The right-back was now behind him.
Rafael passed to Miguel.
Miguel took one touch and then played the ball through the gap.
Kai reached it just outside the box.
The goalkeeper rushed forward.
Kai slowed down.
The keeper expected the shot.
Kai looked toward Rafael.
Rafael was moving toward the far side.
The goalkeeper shifted his weight.
Kai took one more touch.
Then he calmly placed the ball toward the opposite corner.
The goalkeeper dove.
Too late.
The ball struck the inside of the post and rolled into the net.
For a second, Kai simply stood there.
Then the stadium erupted.
"GOAL!"
Rafael reached him first and grabbed him by the shoulders.
"YES!"
Miguel came running behind him.
"We got it!"
Kai laughed as Rafael nearly pulled him off balance.
The scoreboard changed.
San Isidro High School 2 – 0 San Pedro National High School
Kai looked toward the sideline.
Coach Ramirez was pointing at him.
Then he pointed toward his head.
Think.
Kai nodded.
He understood.
The second goal hadn't come from beating two defenders.
It had come from making one defender choose.
And the defender had chosen wrong.
---
San Pedro restarted almost immediately.
Their captain shouted at his teammates.
"One goal!"
"Come on!"
But something had changed.
They had spent so much energy chasing the equalizer that now they needed two goals instead.
Their passes became rushed.
One went out of bounds.
Another was intercepted by Miguel.
A third went too far ahead of the striker.
San Isidro began controlling the tempo.
Miguel slowed the game whenever he could.
Rafael held the ball near the sideline instead of immediately crossing.
Kai dropped deeper to help defensively.
Whenever there was no space forward, they passed backward.
The crowd understood what was happening.
Every completed pass was met with applause.
San Pedro continued running.
But now they were running after the ball.
---
The clock reached eighty-five minutes.
San Pedro threw almost everyone forward.
Kai found himself near his own penalty area when a cross came in.
He jumped and headed the ball away.
It landed near Miguel.
Miguel could have cleared it.
Instead, he kept possession.
A San Pedro midfielder rushed toward him.
Miguel turned his body and passed to Rafael.
Rafael carried the ball forward.
Kai started running.
The right-back chased him.
Rafael looked toward Kai.
For a moment, it seemed like he would play the long pass.
Instead, he stopped and passed backward.
The crowd applauded.
"That's it!"
"Keep the ball!"
Kai smiled.
This wasn't the same match they had played in the first half.
They weren't trying to win every single moment.
They were controlling the entire game.
---
At eighty-nine minutes, San Pedro found one final chance.
Their winger broke down the left side.
Rafael chased him, but the winger managed to get the cross away.
The ball bounced across the six-yard box.
Their striker threw himself forward.
He missed by inches.
A huge gasp came from the stands.
The goalkeeper grabbed the ball and held it against his chest.
He didn't rush.
Five seconds passed.
Then six.
Then seven.
Finally, he released it.
Miguel received.
San Pedro immediately rushed toward him.
Miguel passed to Kai.
Two defenders closed.
Kai shielded the ball with his body.
One defender tried to poke it away.
Kai turned.
The defender clipped his foot.
The referee blew the whistle.
Foul.
Kai remained on the grass for a moment.
Rafael walked over and held out his hand.
"Come on."
Kai grabbed it.
"Almost done?"
Rafael smiled.
"Almost."
Kai stood.
The referee checked his watch.
Then raised the whistle.
PEEEEEEEP!
Full time.
---
For a moment, the field went strangely quiet.
Then the San Isidro bench exploded.
Substitutes ran onto the pitch.
Players threw their arms around one another.
The goalkeeper dropped onto the grass, laughing from exhaustion.
Miguel hugged one of the defenders.
Rafael turned toward the stands and raised both arms.
Kai remained near the center of the field.
He looked at the scoreboard.
San Isidro High School 2 – 0 San Pedro National High School
He had scored twice.
But the second goal felt different from the first.
The first had been instinct.
The second had been patience.
He had passed when he could have forced a shot.
He had waited when he could have rushed.
He had trusted his teammates.
And they had trusted him.
The stadium speakers suddenly came alive.
"Ladies and gentlemen, that brings us to the end of today's match! San Isidro High School defeats San Pedro National High School by two goals to nil!"
The San Isidro supporters erupted.
"Two goals from their young winger, Kai Bendaño, helped secure the victory today!"
The cheering grew louder.
Kai looked toward the stands.
He heard his name being shouted from several sections.
"KAI! KAI! KAI!"
He wasn't sure what to do.
Rafael came up beside him.
"Wave."
Kai looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because they're calling you."
Kai hesitated before raising one hand.
The crowd responded immediately.
Miguel laughed.
"See?"
Kai lowered his hand.
"This is weird."
"You'll get used to it."
"I don't think I want to."
Rafael laughed.
"Too late."
---
The referee then called both teams toward the center circle.
The players formed two lines for the traditional handshake.
Kai stood behind Miguel while Rafael waited beside him.
The San Pedro players looked exhausted.
Some were still disappointed.
Others were already accepting the result.
One by one, they walked past.
"Good game."
"Good game."
When Kai reached San Pedro's captain, the older player held out his hand.
Kai shook it.
"Good game."
The captain gave him a tired smile.
"You're fast."
Kai smiled.
"Thanks."
"That second goal was annoying."
Kai laughed.
"I'll take that as a compliment."
"It is."
The captain released his hand.
"Good luck in the next round."
"You too."
They moved on.
A San Pedro midfielder stopped Kai for a second.
"Hey."
Kai looked at him.
"You really don't get tired?"
Kai laughed.
"I do."
"Didn't look like it."
"I'm tired right now."
The player smiled.
"Good. That makes me feel better."
Kai nodded.
"Good game."
"Good game."
The handshake line continued until both teams had passed one another.
There was no anger.
No shouting.
Just tired players acknowledging the result.
---
The announcer spoke again.
"Before the teams leave the field, we would like to recognize today's Player of the Match."
Rafael immediately looked at Kai.
"No way."
Miguel smiled.
"Looks like you're not escaping."
Kai frowned.
"Escaping what?"
The announcer continued.
"With two goals and an outstanding performance throughout the second half, today's Player of the Match is... Kai Bendaño!"
The crowd erupted again.
Rafael slapped Kai's back.
"Go!"
Kai looked around.
"Me?"
Miguel laughed.
"Unless there's another Kai Bendaño on the field."
Kai slowly walked toward the center.
A tournament staff member handed him a small plaque.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Kai stared at it for a moment.
It wasn't anything expensive.
Just a simple award.
But somehow, holding it felt heavier than he expected.
"Raise it!"
Someone shouted from the sideline.
Kai looked over.
A photographer was already waiting.
"Hold it up!"
Kai raised the plaque.
The camera flashed.
Click.
Another flash.
Kai lowered it.
Rafael was waiting nearby.
"Congratulations, superstar."
Kai sighed.
"Don't call me that."
"You just won Player of the Match."
"Still."
Miguel walked over.
"Come on. Coach wants everyone together."
Kai nodded.
He looked at the plaque one more time before following them.
---
Coach Ramirez gathered the team near the center circle.
The players formed a loose group.
Some were drinking water.
Others were sitting on the grass.
Coach Ramirez looked around before speaking.
"Good job."
The players smiled.
"We didn't play a perfect match," he continued. "We made mistakes. We gave them chances. There were moments when we lost our shape."
He looked toward the defenders.
"But you recovered."
Then toward the midfield.
"You kept moving the ball."
Finally, his eyes settled on Kai.
"And we learned something important today."
Kai listened.
Coach Ramirez continued.
"Scoring is important. Obviously."
Rafael smiled.
"But knowing when not to chase a goal is just as important."
Kai nodded slowly.
Coach Ramirez gave him a small smile.
"That's the part I want you to remember."
Kai looked down at the grass.
The words stayed with him.
Coach Ramirez then looked at the entire team.
"You protected the lead instead of becoming obsessed with extending it."
He nodded.
"That's maturity."
Rafael raised his hand.
"Coach?"
"What?"
"Does maturity come with food?"
The players laughed.
Coach Ramirez stared at him for a few seconds.
"You've been thinking about food since halftime, haven't you?"
Rafael shrugged.
"We've been running for ninety minutes."
Miguel nodded.
"He has a point."
Coach Ramirez sighed.
"Fine. We'll get something after we leave."
Rafael raised both fists.
"Yes!"
"But you're paying for yourself."
Rafael's expression immediately changed.
"Coach..."
Everyone laughed again.
Kai smiled.
The tension that had followed them since the beginning of the match was finally gone.
---
"Kai!"
He turned toward the sideline.
Sofia was waving both hands.
Daniel stood beside her, while Maria was already smiling.
Kai walked toward them.
Sofia reached him first.
"You won!"
Kai laughed.
"We won."
"You scored twice!"
"I know."
"Twice!"
"I heard you the first time."
Sofia looked at the plaque in his hand.
Her eyes widened.
"What's that?"
"Player of the Match."
She stared at him.
"Can I touch it?"
Kai handed it over.
Sofia carefully held it with both hands.
"Wow."
Daniel laughed.
"She'll probably put that in her room."
Sofia looked at him.
"No."
She turned toward Kai.
"I'm keeping it safe."
Kai smiled.
"That's fine."
Maria finally reached them.
Her eyes immediately moved over Kai from head to toe.
"Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Your ankle?"
"Fine."
"Your knee?"
"Fine."
"Your shoulder?"
"Mom."
Maria smiled.
"Okay. I just wanted to make sure."
Daniel walked over and placed a hand on Kai's shoulder.
"You played well."
Kai nodded.
"Thanks."
His father looked at him seriously.
"Don't let two goals change you."
Kai looked at the scoreboard.
"They're only two goals."
Daniel smiled.
"Good answer."
He gave Kai's shoulder a small squeeze.
"There will be stronger opponents."
"I know."
"Harder matches."
"I know."
"Keep training."
Kai nodded.
"I will."
Maria smiled.
"But tonight, you don't train."
Sofia immediately raised her hand.
"Tonight we eat!"
Daniel laughed.
"That's what she has been waiting for."
Kai shook his head.
"You three planned this already."
"Of course," Sofia said proudly.
Kai laughed.
For a few minutes, there was no football system.
No scouts.
No Europe.
No pressure.
Just his family waiting for him after a match.
And that felt good.
---
Several meters away, Arturo Villanueva remained near the stands.
The younger scout beside him closed his notebook.
"Two goals."
Arturo nodded.
"Yes."
"And Player of the Match."
"That too."
The younger scout looked toward Kai.
"He's still only fifteen."
Arturo watched Kai talking with his family.
"That's why we're watching."
"What do you think?"
Arturo didn't answer immediately.
He looked down at the notes he had taken during the match.
"The goals aren't the most interesting part."
The younger scout frowned.
"Then what is?"
"The second half."
Arturo closed the notebook.
"He changed his decision-making after the break. He stopped forcing everything. He started looking for the better option."
The younger scout nodded.
"That's unusual for a player his age."
"Exactly."
Arturo looked toward Kai again.
"Let's keep watching him."
---
Kai was about to leave the field when something faint appeared near the edge of his vision.
A blue glow.
He slowed.
Nobody else reacted.
A small window formed.

Kai stared at the final line.
He was exhausted.

"Later."
The blue window remained for another second.
Then disappeared.
Kai looked toward his family.
Sofia was already waving at him.
"Kai! Hurry!"
Kai smiled.
"Coming."
He started walking toward them.
Behind him, the lights of the stadium continued to shine over the field.
The match was over.
But Kai had a feeling that what happened today would not end with the final whistle.
