The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 34: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The goal had changed the match.

San Pedro no longer had the luxury of waiting for an opening. They needed one, and they needed it quickly.

As soon as the referee restarted the game, their midfielders moved higher. The right-back was already running down the flank, almost level with the winger.

Kai noticed it while jogging back into position.

"They're pushing up," Miguel said.

Kai glanced toward the space behind the defenders. "Yeah."

"Think they'll leave us an opening?"

"They already are."

Miguel gave him a quick look, then turned his attention back to the ball.

San Pedro worked it through midfield and tried to attack down the left. Rafael stayed with the winger, matching his run until the blue shirt finally slowed near the edge of the final third.

He looked for a pass inside.

Rafael didn't give him one.

The winger turned back and played it to the midfielder behind him.

"Good," Coach Ramirez called from the sideline. "Stay compact."

San Isidro's back line shifted together.

They weren't trying to win the ball at any cost. With the lead already in their hands and halftime approaching, there was no reason to make a reckless challenge.

San Pedro had to come to them.

And they did.

---

Their captain was becoming more involved with every attack.

He dropped deeper to receive the ball, then pushed forward again whenever he saw a gap. He was also doing most of the talking.

"Move up!"

"Stay wide!"

"Don't let them turn!"

Kai could hear him from where he stood.

The captain wasn't angry.

He simply knew that one goal would change everything.

Kai understood that too.

He had scored the first goal, but the match was far from safe.

A single mistake could erase all of it.

The ball moved from one side of the field to the other. San Pedro kept trying to pull San Isidro apart, while Miguel and Rafael patiently moved the ball whenever they won possession.

At one point, Miguel received with a defender tight behind him.

"Man on!"

Miguel turned anyway, shielding the ball with his body before slipping it to Rafael.

Rafael took a touch down the line.

The defender followed.

There was no room.

So Rafael passed it back.

The crowd groaned.

"Come on! Go forward!"

Rafael laughed.

"Tell them to come play."

Miguel shook his head.

"Let them shout."

Kai smiled.

The important thing was that San Isidro still had control of the tempo.

---

Up in the stands, Arturo Villanueva watched without saying much.

The younger scout beside him was writing something down.

"Kai's different after the goal."

Arturo kept his eyes on the pitch.

"How?"

"He's not forcing anything."

Arturo nodded.

"That's what I noticed."

He paused.

"A lot of young players score once and immediately start looking for the second."

The scout looked at Kai.

"He isn't?"

"He wants it, obviously."

Arturo smiled.

"But he's not letting the goal decide his next action."

A few rows away, Belle was watching the same thing.

She remembered how Kai used to play when they were younger.

Back then, if he lost the ball, he would chase after it without thinking.

Now he seemed to understand when to run and when to wait.

She leaned forward slightly.

"He's really changed."

---

On the field, San Pedro's right-back pushed forward again.

Kai saw him coming.

Instead of moving toward the touchline, he stayed inside.

The defender noticed him and slowed down.

For a moment, he looked between Kai and his winger, unsure of which one to follow.

That hesitation was enough.

Miguel received the ball and immediately switched play toward the opposite side.

Rafael had space.

He took two touches before a defender closed him down.

This time, he tried to go past him.

The defender blocked the attempt.

Rafael lost the ball.

San Pedro recovered.

"Back!" Miguel shouted.

Kai turned immediately and ran toward his own half.

San Pedro tried to counter, but their first pass was too slow.

Miguel got back in front of the ball and forced them to play sideways.

The chance disappeared.

Coach Ramirez clapped once.

"That's it."

Kai returned to his position.

He wasn't frustrated about losing the ball.

There was still plenty of time.

---

The clock moved past 44 minutes.

San Pedro were becoming more direct.

Their midfielders were making forward runs instead of staying behind the ball. Even their full-backs were taking more risks.

That was dangerous for San Isidro.

But it was also dangerous for San Pedro.

Kai kept checking the space behind the right-back.

It was getting bigger.

He looked toward Miguel.

Miguel noticed.

Neither said anything.

They both knew what it meant.

If San Pedro kept committing players forward, San Isidro would eventually have a chance to counter.

The question was whether that chance would come before halftime.

---

It almost did.

San Pedro's captain received the ball near the halfway line and turned quickly.

He drove through the middle.

One defender stepped toward him.

The captain slipped past.

Another defender moved across.

This time, he passed.

The ball went toward the striker inside the box.

Miguel shouted.

"Watch the middle!"

The San Isidro center-back reached it first and cleared the ball away.

It wasn't pretty, but it worked.

The clearance went out for a throw.

San Pedro's captain immediately grabbed the ball.

"Quick!"

The throw came.

The winger received it and tried to turn.

Rafael stayed close.

The winger couldn't get past him.

He passed backward again.

The attack slowed.

San Isidro breathed.

---

Arturo watched Kai's reaction.

The younger scout expected him to look relieved.

Instead, Kai was already checking the positions around him.

Arturo smiled.

"That's what I mean."

The scout looked over.

"What?"

"He doesn't stay focused on the last play."

"He moves on quickly."

The younger scout nodded and wrote something down.

Arturo finally leaned back.

The match still had a long way to go.

But Kai was giving them more reasons to keep watching.

---

The referee looked at his watch.

45:00.

The fourth official raised the board.

Three minutes of added time.

San Pedro's bench immediately started shouting.

"Push!"

"One more!"

Their captain raised his hand.

The blue shirts moved forward again.

San Isidro dropped back.

Coach Ramirez stepped closer to the field.

"Don't give them the middle!"

The ball went toward the left wing.

Rafael closed down the winger, but the blue shirt cut inside and found the captain.

He turned.

Miguel was behind him.

The captain carried the ball toward the edge of the box before passing to the right.

Their full-back was already running into space.

Kai saw him.

He started moving across, but he didn't rush.

The defender took another touch.

Kai waited.

Then he stepped across just as the full-back tried to cut inside.

The defender had no room.

He tried to cross instead.

Kai got his foot in front of the ball.

It deflected off his boot and went out.

The crowd applauded.

Coach Ramirez gave him a thumbs-up.

"Good, Kai."

Kai nodded and jogged back.

The San Pedro player picked up the ball for the throw.

There was still time.

And judging by the way they were setting up, they weren't planning to waste a second of it.

The throw-in came quickly.

San Pedro's winger took the ball and threw it toward the captain.

He controlled it near the corner of the penalty area, with Miguel already closing him down.

"Don't let him turn!" Coach Ramirez shouted.

The captain tried anyway.

He shifted the ball from one foot to the other, looking for a way through.

Miguel stayed in front of him.

The captain finally passed back to the winger.

Rafael moved across.

The winger crossed without taking another touch.

The ball curled toward the far post.

For a moment, it looked dangerous.

The San Isidro goalkeeper took two steps backward before jumping.

He caught it cleanly.

"Mine!"

He landed with the ball pressed against his chest.

The defenders immediately moved out.

San Pedro's players were already retreating.

The goalkeeper looked toward Miguel.

Then toward Rafael.

He waited another second before throwing the ball out.

No rush.

No reason to give San Pedro another chance.

---

"How much time?" Miguel asked.

Kai glanced toward the referee.

"About a minute."

Miguel nodded.

"Then keep it."

The goalkeeper played short.

Miguel received and immediately passed to Rafael.

Rafael held the ball near the sideline.

A defender came toward him.

Instead of trying to beat him, Rafael turned and played it back.

Miguel took over.

A blue shirt rushed at him.

He passed to the defender behind him.

San Pedro kept pressing.

The ball went back to Miguel.

Then to Rafael.

Then across the field.

The seconds continued to disappear.

The crowd started counting.

"Ten!"

"Nine!"

The San Pedro players heard it too.

They rushed forward.

"Eight!"

Miguel looked for an opening.

"Seven!"

He passed to the right.

"Six!"

The defender returned it.

"Five!"

A blue shirt nearly reached the ball.

"Four!"

Kai moved toward the sideline, giving Miguel another option.

"Three!"

The pass came toward him.

Kai controlled it with one touch and immediately played it back.

"Two!"

San Pedro's midfielder tried to intercept.

"One!"

The ball was cleared toward the halfway line.

The crowd cheered.

The referee raised his whistle.

But San Pedro's winger reached the ball before it went out.

He stopped it with his first touch.

For a second, the entire San Isidro defense froze.

"Back!" Miguel shouted.

The winger pushed forward.

There was one final attack.

---

Kai turned and ran.

The winger carried the ball toward the left side of the penalty area.

Rafael chased him.

The winger looked up.

There were only a few seconds left.

He crossed.

The ball rose high over the defenders.

The San Pedro striker ran toward the six-yard box.

One of San Isidro's defenders stayed with him.

Both jumped.

The striker got a touch.

The ball dropped dangerously in front of goal.

The crowd gasped.

The goalkeeper stepped forward.

A blue shirt swung his foot.

THUMP!

The ball struck the goalkeeper's gloves.

He held on.

For a second, nobody moved.

Then the whistle finally came.

PEEEEEEEP!

Halftime.

The tension disappeared almost immediately.

San Isidro's players bent over, catching their breath.

Miguel dropped his hands onto his knees.

"Finally."

Rafael laughed.

"I thought that was never going to end."

Kai stood a few meters away, breathing heavily.

He looked toward the scoreboard.

San Isidro High School 1 – 0 San Pedro National High School

The lead was still there.

Barely.

---

As the players walked toward the tunnel, Kai looked up toward the family section.

Sofia was standing on her seat, waving the sign she had made for him.

Daniel was laughing beside her.

Maria gave Kai a small wave.

Kai smiled and raised his hand.

Then he looked farther up.

Belle was still there.

She wasn't jumping around like Sofia.

She simply smiled when their eyes met.

Kai gave her a quick nod before turning toward the tunnel.

A little higher in the stands, Arturo Villanueva remained seated.

The younger scout leaned toward him.

"First half?"

Arturo looked at Kai as he disappeared into the tunnel.

"Interesting."

"Just interesting?"

Arturo closed his notebook.

"He scored the goal."

"Everyone saw that."

He stood.

"What I want to know is what he does after halftime."

The younger scout nodded.

"San Pedro will probably come out harder."

"They have to."

Arturo glanced once more toward the field.

"And that's when we'll see how good his decisions really are."

---

Inside the tunnel, the noise from the stadium followed the players.

Miguel wiped his face with his shirt.

"One goal."

Rafael nodded.

"And they're going to come after us."

Kai took a drink of water.

"I know."

Miguel looked at him.

"You think we can hold them?"

Kai looked back toward the field.

"We don't need to hold them."

He tightened the laces on his boot.

"We just need to play better than them."

Miguel smiled.

"That's more like it."

The locker room door opened.

Coach Ramirez was waiting.

"Come on."

The players followed him inside.

The door closed behind them.

Outside, the stadium continued to roar.

Inside, the first half was already being forgotten.

Because everyone knew the second half would be different.

San Pedro had forty-five minutes to turn the match around.

San Isidro had forty-five minutes to protect their dream.

And somewhere in the stands, Arturo Villanueva was waiting to see which side would break first.
