The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 33: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The referee glanced at his watch.

Forty-five minutes.

Only a little time remained before halftime.

The scoreboard still refused to change.

San Isidro High School 0 – 0 San Pedro National High School.

From the stands, it looked like an even match.

On the pitch, however, the players knew the truth.

San Isidro had been asking all the questions.

San Pedro had spent the last several minutes answering them.

Coach Ramirez remained standing near the touchline with his hands behind his back. He wasn't shouting anymore. There was no need.

His players had understood the plan.

Now it was a matter of patience.

"They're defending with their legs," he said quietly.

Assistant Coach Leo looked at him.

"And soon they'll start defending with their emotions."

Coach Ramirez smiled faintly.

"That's when mistakes happen."

---

Kai wiped the sweat from his forehead as he jogged back into position.

His breathing was heavier now.

His calves burned every time he accelerated.

The match had become a battle of endurance as much as skill.

Still, he forced himself to keep looking around instead of staring at the ball.

The San Pedro right-back was slower than before.

Not by much.

Just enough that he needed an extra step to recover after every sprint.

Their holding midfielder had also stopped pressing as aggressively.

He was beginning to conserve energy.

Kai noticed something else.

The San Pedro captain was talking more than anyone on the field.

Every few seconds he pointed, shouted, or waved someone into position.

He wasn't doing it because he wanted to.

He was doing it because his teammates had stopped reacting quickly on their own.

---

The ball rolled calmly across the back line.

San Isidro made no attempt to rush the attack.

One defender received it.

Passed it forward.

Got it back again.

Miguel dropped deeper to help.

The blue shirts followed.

Every pass forced them to move another few meters.

Some supporters became restless.

"Attack!"

"Stop passing backwards!"

Rafael laughed under his breath.

"They think football is that simple."

Miguel answered without taking his eyes off the ball.

"If they're impatient..."

"That's a good sign."

Kai smiled to himself.

Miguel had started sounding more and more like Coach Ramirez.

---

The Football Legacy System appeared for only an instant.

[Football Legacy System]

Passive Match Analysis

Opponent Fatigue: Increasing

Right Defensive Side Stability: 79% → 71%

Suggested Action: Continue circulating possession.

The notification disappeared.

Kai didn't celebrate.

He barely reacted at all.

The system wasn't giving him a magical solution.

It was simply confirming what he could already see.

San Pedro were still disciplined.

But discipline became harder to maintain when tired legs were involved.

---

Miguel finally looked up.

Instead of playing forward, he switched the ball back toward the defenders.

San Pedro pressed immediately.

Their captain pointed toward the center.

"Push higher!"

"Don't let them settle!"

Four blue shirts stepped forward together.

Coach Ramirez noticed the movement instantly.

"There."

Leo nodded.

"They've committed."

---

Miguel received the return pass and turned smoothly.

He didn't panic under pressure.

Instead, he waited until the last possible second before slipping a pass toward Rafael on the opposite wing.

The ball travelled across the field.

Rafael brought it down with his first touch.

The San Pedro left-back sprinted toward him.

So did the nearest midfielder.

For a brief moment...

Two defenders focused entirely on Rafael.

Kai didn't call for the ball.

He simply drifted away from the touchline.

One slow step.

Then another.

The San Pedro right-back followed him automatically.

Exactly as he had done all match.

Kai suddenly stopped.

The defender took one extra step before realizing it.

It wasn't a huge mistake.

Just enough to leave a narrow pocket of space behind him.

Miguel saw it.

"So that's where it is..."

---

Rafael calmly rolled the ball back instead of crossing.

Miguel met it just outside the center circle.

The San Pedro midfield rushed toward him.

That was exactly what San Isidro wanted.

Miguel lifted his head once.

Kai had already started moving.

Not at full speed.

Not yet.

He waited until the center-back stepped forward.

Then...

He exploded.

Miguel chipped the ball over the first line of pressure.

The pass wasn't powerful.

It didn't need to be.

It dropped perfectly into the space between San Pedro's right-back and center-back.

The crowd rose to its feet before Kai even reached it.

The right-back turned.

Too late.

Kai's first touch carried him forward.

The center-back sprinted across to cover.

Kai pushed the ball again.

Every stride brought him closer to the penalty area.

The San Pedro captain abandoned his position and chased after him.

"Stay with him!"

The goalkeeper stepped two meters off his line, lowering his center of gravity.

He wasn't rushing.

He was waiting.

Kai crossed into the edge of the box.

The noise inside the stadium became deafening.

Miguel charged through the middle.

Rafael sprinted toward the far post.

The captain was closing from behind.

The goalkeeper stood directly in front of him.

For a single heartbeat...

Everything slowed down.

Kai lifted his head.

One look at the goalkeeper.

One look at his teammates.

One decision remained.

Kai took one more touch.

The goalkeeper kept coming.

Not too fast.

Not too slow.

His arms spread wide, trying to cover every angle.

Behind Kai, the San Pedro captain was still chasing. The gap between them was shrinking with every step.

"Shoot!" someone shouted from the stands.

Another voice yelled,

"Pass it!"

For a split second, the entire stadium seemed to be telling him what to do.

Kai ignored all of it.

He looked up.

Miguel was arriving near the penalty spot.

Rafael was sprinting toward the far post.

Both were marked.

There was no easy pass.

The goalkeeper took another step forward.

Kai could see the determination in his eyes.

He wasn't guessing.

He was waiting.

Waiting for Kai to make the first move.

Kai remembered something his father had told him years ago.

"The first movement isn't always the smartest one."

"Sometimes the player who waits wins."

He slowed down.

Just enough.

The goalkeeper hesitated.

Only for a heartbeat.

That was all Kai needed.

He shaped his body as if he were about to strike across goal with his left foot.

The goalkeeper leaned to his right.

The captain behind Kai shouted,

"He's shooting!"

At the last possible moment...

Kai nudged the ball slightly to his left.

The goalkeeper had already committed.

His weight was going the wrong way.

Kai found himself staring at an almost empty net.

The angle wasn't perfect.

The captain was sliding.

Another defender was throwing himself toward the goal line.

Kai didn't try to blast the ball.

He simply guided it.

A calm side-foot finish.

The ball rolled across the grass.

Slowly.

Almost painfully slowly.

Every supporter inside the stadium seemed to stop breathing.

The sliding defender stretched his leg.

His boot missed the ball by inches.

It continued rolling...

Closer.

Closer...

Then—

It crossed the line.

For a split second...

Silence.

As if nobody believed it had really happened.

Then the referee pointed toward the center circle.

GOAL!

The stadium exploded.

A wall of red rose to its feet.

Flags flew into the air.

Drums thundered from the stands.

"KAI!"

"KAI!"

"KAI!"

Miguel reached him first and wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

"I knew you'd finish it!"

Rafael came flying in a second later.

"I thought you were going to pass!"

Kai laughed between heavy breaths.

"So did they."

Within seconds, the rest of the team surrounded him.

Some patted his head.

Others pulled him into the middle of the celebration.

Even the substitutes were jumping near the bench.

On the touchline, Coach Leo punched the air.

"YES!"

Coach Ramirez smiled quietly.

He didn't celebrate wildly.

He simply nodded once.

"Patience," he murmured.

"It was worth it."

Across the field, the San Pedro players stood frozen.

Their goalkeeper remained on one knee, staring at the ball inside the net.

The captain slowly got back to his feet.

He looked at Kai for a long moment.

Then he gave a small nod.

"Well played."

Kai returned the gesture.

He respected opponents who fought until the end.

The scoreboard changed.

San Isidro High School 1 – 0 San Pedro National High School

The announcer's voice echoed around the stadium.

"Goal for San Isidro!"

"Scored by... Number Eleven... Kai!"

The roar became even louder.

From the family section, Sofia was jumping up and down so hard that her handmade sign almost slipped from her hands.

Daniel laughed as he placed a hand on her shoulder.

"I told you."

"He only needed one chance."

Maria smiled, her eyes shining with pride.

"He's grown so much."

Back on the pitch, the players finally returned to their positions.

Miguel leaned toward Kai.

"They'll come after us now."

Kai nodded.

"I know."

"They have to."

The referee checked his watch.

Only a few moments remained before halftime.

San Pedro stood over the ball in the center circle.

This time...

They no longer looked comfortable.

They looked desperate.

And that changed everything.
