Chapter 32: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The match entered its forty-third minute.
The scoreboard still showed the same result.
San Isidro High School 0 – 0 San Pedro National High School.
Still no goals.
Still no breakthrough.
But anyone watching closely could tell the momentum had changed.
San Pedro were no longer dictating the game.
They were reacting to it.
For the last fifteen minutes, almost every attack had come from San Isidro.
The players in blue had been forced deeper and deeper into their own half.
Coach Ramirez watched quietly from the touchline.
"They're starting to crack."
Assistant Coach Leo nodded.
"They're still organized."
"For now."
Coach didn't take his eyes off the pitch.
"They don't need to fall apart."
"They only need to lose focus once."
---
Kai jogged back into position as Miguel recycled possession through the defense.
His breathing was heavier now.
Sweat ran down the side of his face, soaking the collar of his jersey.
His legs felt tired.
Everyone's did.
But his eyes stayed sharp.
Instead of staring at the ball, he watched the players around him.
The San Pedro right-back kept glancing over his shoulder before every challenge.
Their holding midfielder was arriving a little later than before.
Even their captain had started shouting more often.
Not because his teammates weren't listening...
Because they were getting slower.
Kai remembered something his father had told him years ago.
"When players get tired, they don't stop running."
"They stop thinking."
---
Miguel called for the ball.
One touch.
Then another.
San Isidro patiently moved possession across the back line.
Some supporters began shouting from the stands.
"Attack!"
"Go forward!"
"Take a shot!"
Coach Ramirez smiled without looking away from the field.
"They're watching the ball."
"We're watching the game."
Assistant Coach Leo chuckled.
"They're getting impatient."
"I'd rather the crowd lose patience than my players."
---
Miguel spotted Kai drifting inside.
Instead of passing directly to him, he played the ball toward open space.
Kai understood immediately.
He accelerated.
The San Pedro right-back reacted at the same time.
Neither player spoke.
They had already spent almost an entire half studying each other.
The defender stayed low, refusing to commit too early.
Kai slowed his run.
The defender slowed too.
For two seconds...
Neither made the first move.
Kai nudged the ball inside.
The defender shifted.
Instantly, Kai rolled it back toward the touchline.
The right-back barely recovered in time.
"Damn..."
He had almost stepped in.
Almost.
Before Kai could escape, the holding midfielder arrived to close the gap.
Exactly where Kai expected him to be.
Instead of forcing a dribble, Kai calmly passed the ball back to Miguel.
San Isidro kept possession.
Coach Ramirez clapped once.
"Excellent!"
"Keep making them move!"
---
San Pedro's captain wasn't happy.
He pointed toward his midfield.
"Stay together!"
"Don't let them pull us apart!"
The holding midfielder wiped the sweat from his forehead.
"They're switching play too quickly."
"We'll catch them."
The captain wasn't convinced.
"They're waiting for us to chase."
---
Miguel heard the shouting.
He smiled to himself.
"They're talking more."
Kai jogged beside him.
"Because they're starting to doubt."
Miguel glanced sideways.
"You noticed too?"
Kai nodded.
"They're thinking instead of reacting."
---
The ball continued moving from side to side.
Left.
Right.
Back.
Forward.
Simple passes.
Nothing spectacular.
Yet every pass forced San Pedro to run.
The blue shirts shuffled together across the pitch.
One step.
Then another.
Again.
And again.
Little by little...
The spaces between them became slightly wider.
Not enough for most players to notice.
Enough for Kai.
---
The familiar mechanical voice echoed quietly inside his mind.

The notification disappeared as quickly as it had appeared.
Kai didn't smile.
He didn't celebrate.
It simply confirmed what he had already seen with his own eyes.
"So I'm not imagining it..."
---
Miguel collected another pass.
"You've seen something."
It wasn't a question.
Kai answered quietly.
"Their right side."
Miguel trusted him.
He always had.
Without another word, he switched the ball forty meters across the field.
Rafael controlled it perfectly near the opposite touchline.
San Pedro's entire back line shifted toward him.
Exactly as planned.
Kai didn't sprint.
He drifted.
One slow step into the half-space between the full-back and the center-back.
Nobody followed.
Not immediately.
Rafael looked up.
Their eyes met.
Kai gave the smallest nod.
That was enough.
Rafael smiled.
"I got you."
Rafael didn't cross immediately.
He kept the ball at his feet, waiting.
The San Pedro left-back rushed toward him while the nearest midfielder slid across to help.
For a moment, two defenders were focused entirely on Rafael.
That was all he needed.
With the outside of his right foot, he slipped a short pass back toward Miguel.
Miguel met it in stride.
He didn't stop the ball.
He didn't even look up.
He already knew where Kai would be.
The pass split the space between two blue shirts.
"Kai!"
Kai accelerated.
He reached the ball just outside the penalty area with his first touch carrying him forward.
The crowd sensed the danger immediately.
Thousands of voices rose together.
"Go!"
"Take him on!"
Only one defender remained.
San Pedro's captain stepped forward.
Unlike the others, he didn't rush.
He stayed balanced, keeping his eyes on Kai's feet instead of the ball.
Kai slowed.
The captain matched his pace.
For a brief moment...
Everything around them seemed to disappear.
The noise.
The crowd.
Even the ticking clock.
Only two players remained.
The captain smiled faintly.
"So... this is what everyone's talking about."
Kai rolled the ball gently under his boot.
"I've heard good things about you too."
The captain nodded.
"Then don't disappoint me."
---
Kai shifted his weight to the left.
The captain didn't move.
He had expected the feint.
Kai dragged the ball back across his body.
Still...
The captain stayed patient.
"He's waiting for me to force it," Kai realized.
Instead of attacking, Kai shielded the ball and laid it off to Miguel, who had arrived outside the box.
The captain blinked in surprise.
"You passed?"
Miguel took one touch before shooting.
BANG!
A San Pedro defender threw himself in front of the effort.
The ball ricocheted high into the air before dropping near the edge of the penalty area.
Kai reacted first.
He controlled it with his chest.
Before it touched the ground...
Another blue shirt crashed into him.
THUD!
Kai stumbled but stayed on his feet.
"No foul!" the referee shouted immediately.
"Play on!"
The supporters from both schools erupted.
One side demanded a free kick.
The other cheered the challenge.
Kai ignored both.
He poked the loose ball toward Rafael before finally losing his balance.
San Isidro kept the attack alive.
---
Rafael tried to curl another cross toward the far post.
This time, the San Pedro goalkeeper came off his line confidently.
He caught the ball above everyone's heads and held it tightly against his chest.
"Good!" he shouted.
"Push up!"
His teammates immediately sprinted out of the penalty area.
For the first time in several minutes, San Pedro had room to breathe.
---
The goalkeeper rolled the ball to his captain.
Instead of clearing it long, San Pedro patiently built from the back.
Coach Ramirez watched carefully.
"They're trying to slow the game."
Assistant Coach Leo nodded.
"They need the halftime whistle."
Coach smiled.
"Which means they know they're under pressure."
---
San Pedro finally managed to string together several passes.
Their winger broke free down the left side and delivered an early cross.
Miguel tracked the run perfectly.
He rose above the striker and headed the ball away.
The clearance landed near the halfway line.
Kai and the San Pedro right-back chased it together.
Shoulder to shoulder.
Neither wanted to give an inch.
The defender leaned into Kai.
"You've been quiet."
Kai smiled without looking at him.
"Have I?"
The defender snorted.
"I thought you were supposed to decide matches."
Kai nudged the ball away before answering.
"Sometimes..."
"...the match decides itself."
The defender frowned.
"What does that even mean?"
Kai didn't reply.
He had already released the ball back to Miguel.

The screen faded.
Kai took a slow breath.
"So that's the plan."
Not a miracle.
Not a hidden skill.
Just information.
The rest was up to him.
---
The referee glanced at his watch.
Forty-four minutes.
One minute remained in normal time.
Neither team wanted to concede before halftime.
San Isidro patiently kept the ball once again, forcing San Pedro to keep chasing.
The blue shirts were still working hard...
But every recovery run looked a little slower than the last.
Coach Ramirez quietly folded his arms.
"They're hanging on."
Leo looked at him.
"You think we'll get one before halftime?"
Coach didn't answer immediately.
His eyes followed Kai as he drifted into another pocket of space.
Then he smiled.
"If not now..."
"...then very soon."
The first crack had already appeared.
It was only a matter of time before the wall finally broke.
