The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 31: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

San Pedro restarted play with a different mindset.

The last few minutes had been enough to convince them of one thing.

Leaving Kai alone—even for a second—was a mistake.

Their captain pointed toward the left side of the pitch.

"Stay close to Eleven."

The right-back nodded.

"I've got him."

"And if he beats you?"

The holding midfielder stepped forward.

"I'll be there."

Their captain gave a satisfied nod.

"Good. Make him work for every touch."

---

The game resumed.

San Pedro kept possession, moving the ball patiently across their back line.

Unlike earlier, they no longer pushed both full-backs forward at the same time.

Coach Ramirez noticed it immediately.

"They've changed."

Assistant Coach Leo folded his arms.

"They're respecting our counterattacks now."

Coach smiled faintly.

"Which means they'll be harder to break."

---

Miguel intercepted a loose pass and quickly found Kai on the left wing.

Kai turned...

But before he could accelerate—

THUD!

The right-back stepped into him shoulder-first.

It wasn't reckless.

It wasn't enough to draw a foul.

It was simply a reminder that someone was always there.

Kai kept his balance, shielding the ball with his body.

The defender leaned in with a grin.

"You'll have to do better than that."

Kai calmly rolled the ball back to Miguel.

"No rush."

Miguel understood immediately.

San Isidro recycled possession.

---

The crowd applauded the simple sequence.

Some wanted Kai to dribble.

Others wanted him to shoot.

But Coach Ramirez clapped louder than anyone.

"Perfect!"

"Don't play their game!"

Kai heard the instruction and nodded to himself.

If San Pedro wanted him to force difficult plays...

He wouldn't give them that satisfaction.

---

Ten minutes later...

Kai checked into midfield again.

The moment the pass reached him, two blue shirts closed in.

One blocked the passing lane.

The other attacked from behind.

Kai trapped the ball with the inside of his foot, turned away from the pressure, and slipped a first-time pass toward Miguel.

The move broke San Pedro's press.

Miguel drove into space before switching play to Rafael.

The crowd responded with another wave of applause.

Coach Leo smiled.

"They're chasing Kai so aggressively..."

"...they're forgetting everyone else."

---

Near the San Pedro bench...

Their coach wasn't impressed.

He called the right-back over during a throw-in.

"I told you to stay with him."

"I am."

"No."

The coach shook his head.

"You're following him everywhere."

"You're leaving your position."

The defender frowned.

"So what do you want me to do?"

The coach pointed toward Kai.

"Mark him."

"But don't let him drag you out of shape."

"If he drops too deep..."

"Pass him to the midfielder."

The defender nodded.

"I understand."

---

As play resumed, Kai immediately noticed the difference.

"They're communicating now."

Earlier, the right-back had chased him all over the field.

Now...

Whenever Kai drifted inside, the holding midfielder stepped across while the full-back stayed wide.

"They learned."

Kai smiled to himself.

"So we'll have to adapt too."

---

The match settled into a tense rhythm.

Neither team rushed forward.

Every attack was built patiently.

Every mistake was punished with immediate pressure.

The scoreboard still read:

San Isidro High School 0 – 0 San Pedro National High School

Nearly thirty minutes had passed.

The supporters could sense it.

One goal...

Might decide everything.

---

Kai received another pass near the touchline.

This time, the right-back didn't charge immediately.

He stayed two steps away.

Waiting.

"You're learning," Kai muttered.

The defender raised an eyebrow.

"What was that?"

Kai gave a small shrug.

"Nothing."

He tapped the ball backward before jogging away.

The defender stared after him.

For some reason...

That calm attitude irritated him more than any insult.

---

A few minutes later, the frustration finally showed.

Kai sprinted after a loose ball near the sideline.

The defender arrived half a second late.

His boot clipped Kai's ankle.

The whistle sounded instantly.

PEEEP!

Free kick.

The referee jogged over.

"Careful."

The defender raised both hands.

"I was going for the ball."

"You were late."

"No card."

"Just watch your timing."

The defender nodded, but as the referee walked away, he muttered under his breath,

"He falls easily."

Kai heard him.

He didn't even bother looking back.

Instead, he picked up the ball and handed it to Miguel.

Miguel smirked.

"He's getting annoyed."

Kai looked toward the defender, who was still shaking his head in frustration.

"Good."

"The more emotional he gets..."

"...the more likely he'll make a mistake."

Miguel laughed.

"Now you're thinking like Coach."

The free kick was quickly taken.

San Isidro kept the ball moving, patiently waiting for the next crack in San Pedro's defense.

San Isidro refused to rush.

Instead of forcing another attack, they kept the ball moving with short, accurate passes.

Miguel switched play from one side to the other.

The midfield trio stayed patient, making San Pedro chase.

For nearly a minute, the blue shirts barely touched the ball.

Coach Ramirez nodded with approval.

"Good."

"Make them run."

"The more they chase, the more they'll get tired."

---

Kai drifted toward the center again.

Just as expected, San Pedro's holding midfielder followed him.

The right-back stayed in position this time.

Kai noticed the adjustment immediately.

"They're communicating better now."

Miguel jogged beside him.

"So?"

Kai smiled.

"They fixed one problem."

Miguel raised an eyebrow.

"And?"

Kai glanced toward Rafael.

"They created another."

---

Miguel didn't need another explanation.

He received the next pass, took one touch, then launched a long diagonal ball toward the opposite flank.

Rafael burst into space.

The San Pedro left-back reacted late and was forced to sprint back.

Rafael controlled the ball beautifully before cutting inside.

The crowd rose again.

"Go!"

"Take him on!"

Rafael feinted a shot.

The defender bit.

Instead, Rafael slipped a pass toward the edge of the box where Miguel had continued his run.

Miguel struck it first time.

BANG!

The shot stayed low.

The goalkeeper stretched full length and pushed it wide with both hands.

Another corner.

The San Isidro supporters applauded loudly.

They hadn't scored...

But everyone could feel the pressure building.

---

The goalkeeper stood up and shouted at his defenders.

"Wake up!"

"Stop letting them shoot!"

The center-backs exchanged frustrated looks.

They had started the match comfortably.

Now...

San Isidro was controlling the rhythm.

---

As the players prepared for another corner, the San Pedro right-back walked past Kai.

"You've barely touched the ball."

Kai looked at him.

"Really?"

The defender smirked.

"I thought you were supposed to be the dangerous one."

Kai smiled calmly.

"If you're watching me that closely..."

"...then I'm already doing my job."

For the first time all afternoon...

The defender had no answer.

---

Rafael delivered another dangerous corner.

Miguel attacked the near post again.

This time San Pedro anticipated the movement.

Their captain won the header and cleared the ball outside the box.

It dropped near Kai.

Without thinking, Kai struck it on the volley.

The shot flew through a crowd of players.

It took a slight deflection...

...and missed the post by inches.

The entire stadium groaned.

"So close!"

Kai placed both hands on his hips.

"I hit that clean."

Miguel jogged over.

"Keep shooting."

"One of them is going in."

---

The referee glanced at his watch.

Thirty-eight minutes.

The first half was entering its final stretch.

Coach Leo walked closer to Ramirez.

"They're surviving."

Coach nodded.

"Barely."

"They've stopped attacking almost completely."

Sure enough...

San Pedro had changed.

Instead of committing numbers forward, they now waited inside their own half.

Their plan was simple.

Defend first.

Counter later.

---

Kai wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"They've parked deeper."

Miguel nodded.

"They're waiting for us to make a mistake."

Kai looked around the field.

"No."

"They're waiting for me."

Miguel laughed quietly.

"I think you're right."

---

Play resumed once more.

San Pedro finally found a chance to counter.

A quick pass released their winger down the left side.

He sprinted into open space before whipping in an early cross.

Their striker attacked it.

Miguel recovered just in time, getting a slight touch that changed the ball's path.

Instead of reaching the striker...

It rolled safely into the goalkeeper's hands.

The San Isidro supporters applauded their captain.

"Great defending!"

Miguel jogged back, breathing heavily.

"That's the first real chance they've had in a while."

Coach Ramirez shouted from the touchline.

"Stay focused!"

"They only need one mistake!"

---

Kai looked toward the scoreboard.

39:12

The first half was almost over.

Neither team had found the breakthrough.

But the momentum had clearly shifted.

San Pedro were no longer trying to win the midfield battle.

They were trying to survive it.

Kai took a deep breath as San Isidro built another attack from the back.

Somewhere...

He could feel it.

The match was slowly reaching its turning point.
