The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 30: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

Kai exploded forward the moment Rafael's clearance dropped into open space.

The ball bounced once on the grass.

Twice.

A San Pedro center-back immediately turned and sprinted after it, but Kai had reacted first. His acceleration carried him past the halfway line before anyone could close him down.

The roar from the San Isidro supporters grew louder with every stride.

"Go, Kai!"

"Keep running!"

He pushed the ball ahead with his left foot, keeping it just within reach. Out of the corner of his eye, he noticed blue shirts already racing back.

San Pedro had lost possession, but they weren't panicking.

Their defenders recovered quickly.

"They're fast..." Kai thought.

One of the midfielders chased from behind while the right-back sprinted across to cut off the angle.

Kai lifted his head.

Miguel was charging straight through the middle.

Rafael was flying down the opposite wing.

Three attackers.

Four defenders.

No easy answer.

The crowd urged him to keep going, but Kai ignored the noise.

He remembered Coach Ramirez's words from training.

"Don't force the attack. Read the game."

Instead of trying to dribble past the first defender, Kai slowed down just enough to make him hesitate.

That tiny pause changed everything.

The defender couldn't decide whether to step in or hold his position.

Kai used that moment to slip a short pass inside.

Miguel received it cleanly.

Without taking an extra touch, he spun away from his marker.

"Right!"

Kai didn't need to look.

He already knew Rafael would be making the run.

Miguel threaded the ball into space.

Rafael reached it near the corner of the penalty area.

A defender closed him down immediately.

Instead of crossing blindly, Rafael shielded the ball and waited.

Kai continued his run into the box.

Miguel arrived near the edge of the area.

San Pedro's defenders suddenly had two dangerous runners to watch.

Rafael looked up.

"There!"

His cross skimmed low across the six-yard box.

The goalkeeper dived forward.

A center-back stretched a leg.

The ball deflected awkwardly and bounced toward the penalty spot.

For a split second...

Nobody knew where it would fall.

Kai reacted first.

He took one quick step and swung his left foot.

BANG!

A defender threw himself in front of the shot.

The ball smashed into his thigh and flew over the crossbar.

The entire stadium let out one enormous gasp.

"So close!"

Miguel slapped Kai lightly on the shoulder as they jogged toward the corner flag.

"Good strike."

Kai let out a slow breath.

"I thought it was in."

"So did I."

Rafael jogged over with a grin.

"Keep getting into those positions."

"They won't stop every shot."

The three exchanged quick nods before taking their places for the corner.

Near the touchline, Coach Ramirez clapped once.

"That's exactly what we practiced!"

"You didn't rush."

"You waited for the opening."

Assistant Coach Leo pointed toward San Pedro's right side.

"Their full-back is staying high."

"Keep attacking that channel."

Across the field, San Pedro's coach wasn't pleased.

He motioned for his captain to come closer.

"They're targeting the space behind us."

"I want the right-back to be more careful."

The captain nodded immediately.

"I'll tell him."

Within seconds, San Pedro adjusted their shape.

Their right-back stopped pushing so aggressively.

Their holding midfielder also began drifting toward Kai whenever San Isidro won the ball.

Kai noticed the change almost immediately.

"They're already adapting..."

This wasn't like the group stage.

Every successful attack forced an answer.

Every mistake was studied.

Every decision mattered.

The referee placed the ball inside the corner arc.

Rafael walked over to take it.

He looked into the crowded penalty area.

Miguel raised one hand near the penalty spot.

Kai stayed closer to the edge of the box.

They had rehearsed this routine dozens of times.

Now...

They would see if it worked under real pressure.

Rafael raised his left hand.

It was the signal.

Inside the penalty area, Miguel glanced at Kai before giving the slightest nod.

They both knew the routine.

The referee blew his whistle.

Rafael curled the corner toward the near post.

Instead of attacking the ball...

Miguel sprinted across the face of goal, dragging two defenders with him.

Exactly as they had practiced.

The near-post area opened for a split second.

Kai charged into the gap.

He jumped.

THUD!

His glancing header changed the ball's direction just enough to send it toward the far corner.

The San Pedro goalkeeper reacted instantly.

With an outstretched hand, he tipped the ball over the crossbar.

The stadium erupted.

"What a save!"

"That almost went in!"

Kai landed on both feet and let out a quiet breath.

He had beaten his marker.

He had directed the header well.

The goalkeeper had simply been better.

Miguel jogged over with a grin.

"Keep doing that."

"One of them will go in."

Kai nodded.

"As long as we keep creating chances."

---

San Pedro looked rattled.

For the first time since kickoff, they weren't calmly passing around the back.

Their defenders exchanged quick words.

Their captain pointed toward Kai.

"Don't lose him."

"If he cuts inside, someone has to pick him up."

The right-back wiped the sweat from his forehead.

"I know."

"He's quicker than he looks."

---

The second corner didn't produce another chance.

San Pedro cleared it before Miguel could reach the ball.

This time, instead of forcing another attack, San Isidro dropped back into shape.

Coach Ramirez watched approvingly.

"Good."

"Reset."

"No unnecessary risks."

Football wasn't about attacking every second.

Sometimes...

The smartest decision was knowing when to wait.

---

The match settled down again.

San Pedro regained possession and slowed the tempo.

Their midfielders exchanged short passes, patiently looking for an opening.

Kai stayed disciplined.

He resisted the urge to press alone.

Instead, he glanced toward Miguel.

"When?"

Miguel understood immediately.

He raised one finger.

Wait.

The entire team remained compact.

Blue shirts moved the ball from one side to the other.

They searched for gaps.

They found none.

---

Then...

A careless touch.

San Pedro's holding midfielder allowed the ball to drift just a little too far in front of him.

Miguel exploded forward.

"Now!"

Kai reacted at the same instant.

Rafael sprinted upfield.

The pressure came from three different directions.

The midfielder tried to recover.

Too late.

Miguel poked the ball away cleanly.

San Isidro had possession once more.

The crowd roared.

---

This time, Miguel kept the ball himself.

He carried it forward before slipping a short pass to Kai.

The moment Kai received it, two defenders closed him down.

Just as Coach Ramirez had predicted.

Instead of trying to beat both of them...

Kai played a quick one-two with Miguel.

One touch.

Return pass.

The defenders were suddenly facing the wrong direction.

Kai burst between them.

The crowd rose again.

"Go!"

"Take him on!"

Only one center-back remained.

Kai pushed the ball onto his stronger foot.

The defender didn't dive in.

He stayed patient.

Waiting.

Kai smiled inwardly.

"You're disciplined."

At the last moment, he disguised a shot.

The defender shifted his weight.

Kai immediately slipped a pass into the space behind him.

Rafael arrived at full speed.

One touch.

Shot.

BANG!

The ball flew low toward the near post.

The goalkeeper got down quickly and blocked it with his right leg.

The rebound spun across the six-yard box before another defender hurriedly cleared it into touch.

The San Pedro supporters cheered loudly.

Their goalkeeper punched the air.

His teammates rushed over to congratulate him.

---

Rafael bent over, hands on his knees.

"So close..."

Kai jogged beside him.

"We're getting through."

Miguel nodded.

"They're defending deeper now."

Coach Ramirez heard the conversation.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"Good."

"That means they're respecting you."

He looked toward the field.

"But don't mistake respect for fear."

"They're still dangerous."

The players nodded.

The scoreboard still showed:

San Isidro High School 0 – 0 San Pedro National High School

No goals yet.

But the momentum had begun to shift.

Little by little...

San Isidro was taking control of the match.
