The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 29: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

Saturday arrived faster than anyone expected.

Before sunrise...

San Isidro High School was already awake.

The school grounds, usually quiet on weekends, buzzed with excitement.

Students wearing red shirts gathered near the main gate, waving handmade banners and school flags. Parents chatted while waiting for the team bus, and younger children ran around pretending to score the winning goal.

The quarterfinal had finally arrived.

---

Inside the locker room...

The atmosphere was completely different from the group stage.

No music.

No loud jokes.

Only the sound of boots being tied and tape wrapping around ankles.

Miguel finished adjusting the captain's armband before looking around the room.

"This is it."

"No second chances."

Rafael smirked.

"Then let's make sure we're still playing after today."

Several teammates chuckled, easing the tension for a moment.

Kai sat quietly at his locker, staring at his boots.

They were old.

The white stripes had faded, and there were scratches from countless training sessions.

He tightened the laces carefully.

Every knot reminded him of the mornings he trained alone before school.

Every mark reminded him how far he had come.

---

Coach Ramirez stepped into the room.

The conversations stopped immediately.

He looked at each player before speaking.

"I won't give a long speech."

"You already know what's at stake."

He paused for a moment.

"San Pedro is fast."

"They're disciplined."

"And they believe they can beat us."

He let those words sink in.

"So today..."

"Show them why we finished first in Group A."

---

Assistant Coach Leo walked to the tactics board.

The familiar 4-3-3 formation appeared once again.

"This is our starting lineup."

No surprises.

Kai remained on the left wing.

Miguel led the midfield.

Rafael stayed on the opposite flank.

Coach Leo tapped the board.

"Remember the space behind their full-backs."

"But don't force it."

"If the opening isn't there..."

"Keep the ball."

"Make them run."

Kai nodded.

That had been the focus of their entire week.

---

Outside...

The team bus rolled through the streets of San Isidro.

As it passed the public market, people stopped to wave.

Some raised their fists in encouragement.

Others shouted from the sidewalks.

"Bring home another win!"

"We're behind you!"

Miguel smiled through the window.

"I don't think we've ever had this much support."

Rafael laughed.

"If we lose, they'll probably make us walk home."

The bus burst into laughter.

Even Kai smiled.

The tension eased, if only for a few minutes.

---

Nearly forty minutes later...

The bus entered the parking area of San Isidro Municipal Stadium.

But this time...

The crowd was even larger than before.

The quarterfinal had attracted supporters from both schools.

One side of the stadium shimmered in red.

The other was covered in blue.

Drums echoed through the air.

School chants competed with one another.

The atmosphere felt bigger.

Louder.

More important.

Kai stepped off the bus and looked toward the towering stadium.

His heartbeat quickened.

"This really is the knockout stage..."

---

As the San Isidro players walked toward the entrance tunnel...

Another bus pulled into the parking lot.

The words San Pedro National High School were painted across its side.

Their players stepped out one after another.

Tall.

Confident.

Focused.

Among them walked a lean forward with short black hair.

He noticed Kai almost immediately.

Their eyes met for only a second.

Neither smiled.

Neither looked away.

Without saying a word...

Both continued walking toward the stadium.

The quarterfinal had not started yet.

But the battle had already begun.

The tunnel leading to the pitch was quieter than usual.

Only the sound of boots tapping against the concrete echoed through the narrow hallway.

Both teams stood in separate lines.

No one spoke.

The excitement from the crowd outside seemed far away.

Kai closed his eyes for a moment.

He took one deep breath.

Then another.

When he opened them again...

His focus had completely changed.

There was no crowd.

No noise.

Only football.

---

The referee walked to the front of the tunnel.

"Captains."

Miguel stepped forward for San Isidro.

San Pedro's captain did the same.

A brief handshake.

The coin spun into the air.

It landed.

San Pedro won the toss.

They chose to attack first.

Miguel nodded and returned to his teammates.

"They'll have the kickoff."

Kai simply replied,

"Then we'll take the first chance."

---

The stadium announcer's voice echoed through the speakers.

"Please welcome..."

"San Pedro National High School!"

Blue flags filled one side of the stadium as their supporters erupted into cheers.

A few moments later...

"Ladies and gentlemen..."

"San Isidro High School!"

The roar was even louder.

Red banners waved across the opposite stands.

Kai glanced toward the family section.

He spotted his father, mother, and Sofia.

Sofia was waving a homemade sign with both hands.

GO, KUYA KAI!

Kai smiled before looking back toward the pitch.

---

The players walked onto the field.

The afternoon sun shone brightly above them.

The grass looked perfect.

The white lines were freshly painted.

Everything felt ready.

The referee gathered both captains.

"Play fair."

"Respect each other."

"And respect the game."

Miguel nodded.

"So will we."

---

The starting lineups took their positions.

Kai stood on the left wing.

Across from him...

San Pedro's right-back stretched his shoulders while staring directly at him.

He looked older.

Stronger.

The defender smiled confidently.

"You're Number Eleven, right?"

Kai answered calmly.

"I am."

The defender smirked.

"I've seen what you did against Holy Cross."

"Don't expect the same today."

Kai didn't respond.

He simply walked to his position.

Words never won matches.

---

Coach Ramirez stood near the touchline.

He raised one hand toward his players.

"Stay patient."

"Stick to the plan."

"No rushing."

The players answered together.

"Yes, Coach!"

---

The referee looked around the field one final time.

Everything was set.

He lifted the whistle to his lips.

The stadium slowly grew quiet.

Thousands of eyes focused on the center circle.

One sharp blast echoed across the stadium.

PEEEEEEEP!

The quarterfinal had begun.

San Pedro kicked the ball backward.

Instead of attacking immediately...

They calmly passed it between their defenders.

Kai jogged into position without pressing.

Exactly as Coach Ramirez had instructed.

"Don't chase."

"Make them come to us."

---

For nearly two minutes...

Neither team created a chance.

San Pedro patiently kept possession.

San Isidro stayed compact.

Every passing lane was covered.

Every movement was answered.

The crowd watched in silence.

This wasn't the frantic football of the group stage.

Both teams respected each other's quality.

Neither wanted to make the first mistake.

---

Then it happened.

San Pedro's left-back suddenly sprinted forward.

The winger immediately cut inside.

Kai recognized the movement.

"The overlap!"

Rafael reacted at once.

Miguel shifted across.

The cross came in...

But Rafael got there first.

His clearance flew toward midfield.

Kai chased after it with explosive speed.

For the first time in the match...

San Isidro had space to counter.

The crowd rose to its feet.

The quarterfinal had finally come alive.
