Chapter 28: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup
Volume 1: The Impossible Dream
The morning after the knockout draw, the San Isidro football field was already busy long before classes began.
A thin layer of mist covered the grass, and the cool morning air made every breath feel fresh.
One after another, the players arrived carrying their boots and training bags.
No one complained about the early call.
The quarterfinal was only a few days away.
Everyone understood what was at stake.
Kai was among the first to arrive.
Instead of waiting for the others, he placed a ball on the ground and began lightly juggling it.
Left foot.
Right foot.
Thigh.
Shoulder.
The ball never touched the grass.
Not far away, Coach Ramirez watched quietly.
Assistant Coach Leo chuckled.
"He's been here for almost fifteen minutes."
Coach Ramirez nodded.
"He treats every training session like it's match day."
---
By the time the rest of the squad had gathered, the sun had started to rise over the school buildings.
Coach Ramirez blew his whistle.
"Everyone, bring it in."
The players formed a semicircle around him.
No one spoke.
Coach looked at each of them before breaking the silence.
"We won the group."
"A lot of people think that means the hard part is over."
He shook his head.
"They're wrong."
"The real tournament starts now."
The players exchanged serious looks.
Even Rafael, who usually had a joke ready, stayed quiet.
---
Assistant Coach Leo unfolded a large tactics board.
Magnets shaped like tiny football shirts were already arranged across it.
At the top was written:
San Pedro National High School
Coach Ramirez tapped the board with a marker.
"This team doesn't play like Holy Cross."
"They're more aggressive."
"They attack through the wings."
"Their full-backs love joining the attack."
He moved two magnets high up the field.
"When they move forward..."
"They leave space behind."
Kai narrowed his eyes.
"So if we recover the ball quickly..."
"We can attack those empty spaces."
Coach smiled.
"Exactly."
"That's the first thing I wanted all of you to notice."
---
Miguel crossed his arms.
"Coach..."
"If they know that's their weakness, won't they be careful?"
"A good question."
Coach Ramirez nodded approvingly.
"They probably will."
"That's why football isn't only about tactics."
"It's about reading the game."
"If they stay back..."
"We change our approach."
"If they attack..."
"We punish them."
"There is no single answer."
Kai quietly memorized every word.
That was something his father had always told him.
Football was never just about running faster than everyone else.
It was about making the right decision at the right moment.
---
Coach Ramirez stepped away from the tactics board.
"Enough talking."
"It's time to see if you can apply what you've learned."
Assistant Coach Leo quickly divided the squad into two teams.
The starters pulled on red bibs.
The substitutes wore yellow.
Miguel looked at the yellow team and grinned.
"So... we're finally playing?"
Coach Leo laughed.
"Not just playing."
He pointed toward the substitutes.
"Today, your job is to become San Pedro."
The yellow team looked at one another.
"Copy everything they do."
"Attack through the wings."
"Push your full-backs."
"Make the red team solve the problems they'll face in the quarterfinal."
Rafael tightened the laces on his boots and smiled.
"Now this sounds fun."
Kai rolled the ball beneath his foot as he walked toward the center circle.
The whistle hadn't even blown yet...
But he could already feel the intensity rising.
Training was over.
Preparation had begun.
Coach Leo raised his whistle.
"Ready?"
The players took their positions.
Kai stood in midfield, glancing across the pitch. The yellow team had spread out exactly the way San Pedro usually did—wide wingers, adventurous full-backs, and a lone striker waiting between the center-backs.
Coach Ramirez folded his arms.
"Play like it's the quarterfinal."
The whistle pierced the morning air.
---
The yellow team struck first.
Instead of passing around the back, they attacked immediately.
Their right winger received the ball and sprinted down the touchline. The full-back overlapped without hesitation, creating a two-on-one situation.
Rafael moved to close the winger.
"He's overlapping!" Kai shouted.
Miguel heard him and slid across to help.
Forced into a tight angle, the winger played the ball backward instead of crossing.
Coach Ramirez nodded.
"Good communication."
"That's exactly what I wanted."
---
The red team regained possession.
Kai collected the loose ball with one touch and lifted his head.
Miguel was already making a run through the middle.
Rafael stayed wide.
The space behind the attacking full-back was completely open.
Kai didn't rush.
He waited.
The defender stepped forward for just a split second.
That was enough.
His pass sliced through the gap.
Rafael reached it before anyone else.
He drove toward the edge of the box and whipped in a low cross.
Miguel met it first.
GOAL.
The finish was simple.
The build-up wasn't.
Coach Leo clapped.
"Perfect."
"You attacked the space, not the player."
---
The drill restarted.
This time the yellow team adjusted.
Their full-backs attacked more carefully, and their midfielders pressed Kai the moment he received the ball.
One midfielder charged in from behind.
Another blocked the passing lane.
Kai felt the pressure immediately.
Instead of forcing a risky pass, he turned away from the challenge and laid the ball back to one of the defenders.
The attack slowed.
San Isidro kept possession.
Coach Ramirez smiled.
"Good."
"Sometimes the smartest play is the simplest one."
---
As the practice continued, the tempo increased.
Every challenge became sharper.
Every mistake was punished.
Near the halfway line, Miguel intercepted a pass and launched another attack.
Kai sprinted into space, calling for the ball.
Miguel slipped it forward.
Kai reached it just outside the penalty area.
A defender rushed toward him.
Instead of shooting, Kai flicked the ball to the left.
Rafael appeared from nowhere.
His first-time shot curled toward the far corner.
It struck the post.
The rebound bounced back into play.
The yellow team cleared it away.
Rafael laughed.
"So close."
Kai grinned.
"Next time."
---
Forty minutes passed before Coach Ramirez stopped the game.
The players gathered around him, breathing heavily.
He pointed toward the tactics board again.
"What have you learned?"
Miguel answered first.
"They're dangerous when they attack."
Rafael added,
"But they're vulnerable when they lose the ball."
Coach nodded.
"Exactly."
He looked at Kai.
"And you?"
Kai thought for a moment.
"They want us to panic."
"If we stay calm..."
"We'll create our own chances."
A small smile appeared on Coach Ramirez's face.
"That's the answer I was hoping to hear."
---
The final drill focused on quick transitions.
Whenever the yellow team lost possession, the red team had only eight seconds to launch an attack.
If they failed...
The play stopped.
The exercise repeated again and again.
By the end, everyone's legs felt heavy.
Sweat dripped from their faces.
Yet no one asked for a break.
Every player knew they were preparing for something much bigger than another training session.
---
Coach Leo finally blew the whistle.
"That's enough for today."
Several players dropped onto the grass.
Miguel lay flat on his back, staring at the sky.
"I think Coach is trying to kill us before San Pedro does."
Laughter spread across the field.
Even Coach Ramirez couldn't hide a smile.
"If you're still joking..."
"Then you still have energy."
The team groaned together.
---
Before dismissing them, Coach Ramirez called everyone in one last time.
"Remember this."
He looked from one player to another.
"Winning isn't about making spectacular plays every minute."
"It's about making the right decision..."
"...over and over again."
His eyes settled on Kai.
"In the knockout stage..."
"The team that stays calm under pressure usually walks away with the victory."
Kai tightened his grip on his water bottle and nodded.
The quarterfinal was getting closer.
And for the first time since the draw...
He wasn't thinking about San Pedro.
He was thinking about how much stronger San Isidro had become as a team.
