The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Chapter 27: The Filipino Wonderkid: Road to the World Cup

Volume 1: The Impossible Dream

The next morning...

San Isidro High School felt livelier than ever.

Students filled the hallways before the first bell.

Almost every conversation revolved around one topic.

"The knockout draw is today."

"I heard it'll be announced during lunch."

"I hope we don't face North Central immediately."

Kai heard the conversations as he walked toward his classroom.

He simply smiled.

No matter who their opponent would be...

They had to be ready.

---

Inside the classroom...

Miguel dropped into his seat with a loud sigh.

"I barely slept."

Rafael looked at him.

"Nervous?"

Miguel nodded honestly.

"A little."

"The group stage is one thing."

"But one mistake in the knockout stage..."

"...and you're going home."

Kai understood exactly what he meant.

From this point onward...

Every match would feel like a final.

---

The morning lessons felt unusually slow.

Even the teachers noticed their students weren't paying full attention.

Every few minutes...

Someone glanced at the classroom clock.

Waiting.

The draw had become more exciting than the lessons themselves.

---

Finally...

The lunch bell rang.

RIIIIING!

Instead of rushing to the cafeteria...

Most students hurried toward the school gymnasium.

Large speakers had already been prepared.

A projector screen stood at the front.

Teachers guided everyone inside.

"Take your seats."

"The tournament committee will announce the knockout bracket shortly."

The football team sat together in the front row.

Coach Ramirez and Assistant Coach Leo stood quietly near the side.

Neither coach said a word.

---

A few moments later...

The principal walked onto the stage.

He adjusted the microphone.

"Good afternoon, everyone."

The students answered together.

"Good afternoon, Sir!"

He smiled.

"First of all..."

"Congratulations once again to our football team for finishing first in Group A."

The entire gym erupted in applause.

Kai lowered his head slightly.

He still wasn't comfortable being the center of attention.

---

The applause slowly faded.

The principal continued.

"This morning..."

"The tournament committee officially completed the group stage."

"The knockout bracket has now been finalized."

A wave of excitement spread across the gym.

Everyone leaned forward.

Even Rafael stopped smiling.

---

The projector flickered to life.

One by one...

The final group standings appeared.

Group A

1. San Isidro High School

2. Holy Cross Academy

Group B

1. North Central Academy

2. San Pedro National High School

Coach Ramirez quietly folded his arms.

Everything had gone exactly as expected.

North Central had finished first in their group.

---

The screen changed once more.

Now...

The official knockout bracket appeared.

Quarterfinal 1

San Isidro High School (A1)

vs

San Pedro National High School (B2)

For a second...

The gymnasium remained completely silent.

Then...

Cheers exploded throughout the room.

"We avoided North Central!"

"Let's go!"

"We can do this!"

Miguel let out a deep breath.

"I was honestly expecting the worst."

Rafael laughed.

"So was I."

Kai looked at the bracket without saying anything.

San Pedro...

He remembered watching them lose to North Central.

They weren't weak.

Not even close.

---

Coach Ramirez finally spoke.

"Don't celebrate yet."

The players immediately looked at him.

"San Pedro earned second place for a reason."

"They're strong enough to eliminate anyone who underestimates them."

The excitement inside the gym quickly settled.

Kai nodded.

Coach was right.

There were no easy matches anymore.

---

Meanwhile...

On the other side of the bracket...

Another pairing appeared.

North Central Academy (B1)

vs

Holy Cross Academy (A2)

Miguel quietly whistled.

"That's going to be a war."

Rafael nodded.

"Captain Adrian against Number Ten."

Kai's eyes remained fixed on the screen.

Gabriel.

The calm captain of North Central.

If both teams kept winning...

There was only one possible outcome.

A meeting in the championship match.

Kai unconsciously clenched his fist.

"...We'll meet eventually."

The students continued staring at the bracket projected on the screen.

The excitement slowly settled.

Now...

Everyone understood what lay ahead.

One loss...

And the tournament would be over.

---

Coach Ramirez stepped in front of the football team.

His expression was calm.

"Remember this."

"The knockout stage is different."

"No second chances."

"No room for careless mistakes."

The players nodded.

Every word carried weight.

---

Assistant Coach Leo handed each player a printed sheet.

On the front was a simple heading.

Quarterfinal Opponent

San Pedro National High School

Miguel looked at the first page.

"They already prepared this?"

Coach Leo smiled.

"We started preparing yesterday."

Rafael blinked.

"Before we even knew our opponent?"

Coach Ramirez nodded.

"A coach prepares for every possibility."

---

The projector changed once again.

Highlights from San Pedro's previous matches began playing.

Kai watched carefully.

San Pedro attacked aggressively.

Their wingers loved taking on defenders one-on-one.

Their striker was quick inside the penalty area.

But something caught Kai's attention.

"They leave spaces behind their full-backs."

Coach Ramirez smiled.

"Good."

"You noticed."

Kai nodded.

"When both full-backs attack..."

"Their center-backs become isolated."

Coach pointed at the screen.

"Exactly."

"That could become our opportunity."

---

Miguel leaned closer.

"So we'll counterattack?"

Coach Ramirez shook his head.

"Not necessarily."

"We'll decide that after training."

"I want all of you to understand one thing."

He looked around the room.

"Football isn't about forcing your own style."

"It's about finding the best way to beat the opponent in front of you."

Kai quietly memorized those words.

---

The meeting lasted nearly another hour.

By the time it ended...

Every player had pages of notes.

Coach Ramirez closed the folder.

"Tomorrow..."

"We return to full training."

"The quarterfinal is only a few days away."

"No one relaxes."

"Understood?"

"YES, COACH!"

Their voices echoed through the gym.

---

As the football team left the gymnasium...

Students immediately surrounded them.

"You'll beat San Pedro!"

"Bring home another win!"

"We're cheering for you!"

Kai smiled politely.

"Thank you."

Miguel laughed.

"I think half the school is coming to the match."

Rafael grinned.

"Good."

"The louder they cheer..."

"The better we'll play."

---

Not far away...

Belle quietly watched Kai talking with his classmates.

She smiled to herself.

"He looks happier now."

One of her friends nudged her gently.

"You really believe they'll win?"

Belle looked toward the football team.

Then answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

Her friend smiled.

"That's a lot of confidence."

Belle's eyes remained on Kai.

"...Because I know how hard he works."

Before her friend could ask another question...

Belle simply walked back toward her classroom.

---

Outside the school...

Coach Ramirez and Assistant Coach Leo stood beside the football field.

The students had already gone home.

Coach Leo looked at the empty pitch.

"Think they're ready?"

Coach Ramirez watched the goalposts in silence.

"They're improving."

"But this tournament..."

"...is about to become much harder."

He folded his arms.

"From now on..."

"Every opponent will have a plan for Kai."

Coach Leo nodded slowly.

"They've all seen his matches."

Coach Ramirez smiled faintly.

"Good."

"It's time he learns what it means..."

"...to play with defenders expecting him."

---

Far across town...

Inside North Central Academy...

Gabriel stood alone on the training field after practice.

His coach walked over carrying the official tournament bracket.

"We're facing Holy Cross."

Gabriel nodded calmly.

"I know."

The coach looked at him.

"And if both teams keep winning..."

He pointed toward the championship side of the bracket.

"You'll meet San Isidro."

Gabriel looked toward the empty goal.

His expression didn't change.

"The team with Number Eleven."

The coach nodded.

"Yes."

Gabriel picked up a football and gently rolled it beneath his foot.

"I've been hoping for that."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

"But first..."

"...we win the semifinal."

The evening wind swept across the empty field.

On opposite sides of the tournament...

Two teams were preparing for different opponents.

Yet somewhere deep inside...

Both already knew.

If they kept winning...

Their paths would eventually cross.
