Chapter 143 - 142: Settling Accounts
Leo Grant glanced at Nina Jennings, who had taken off her mask. "Why are you still here? Silas Lynch isn’t here today."
The subtext was clear: This had nothing to do with her, and she could get lost.
Nina Jennings’s expression twisted for a moment, but she quickly composed herself.
"So what if Silas Lynch isn’t here? It’s not like I came to see him. I’m Yvonne’s protector today, so I’d advise you not to get too smug."
"Can you beat me in a fight? Or can you beat my babe?"
Leo Grant’s tone was mild. The damage was negligible, but the insult was immense.
"Hey! Why, you..."
Yvonne Lowell cut her off. "That’s enough, Nina. Have your people pull back, then wait for me in the car."
"I know, I know. You’d think I actually enjoy being a third wheel here."
Nina Jennings pouted and left indignantly.
’Sure enough, love makes people blind.’
’When a handsome man was involved, her fifteen years of friendship as a bestie meant nothing at all.’
The moment Nina Jennings left, Yvonne Lowell shoved him away.
Caught by surprise, Leo Grant stumbled back two steps. He froze, looking at her in confusion. "Babe?"
"The cargo issue is settled, but we’re not done with you insulting me."
’That punk. He shouldn’t think I’d just let it go.’
’I was just saving face for him while Nina Jennings was here. This isn’t over.’
’Right now, Leo Grant desperately wished he could go back in time half an hour just to give his arrogant past self a huge slap across the face.’
A glint flashed in his eyes. He decided to seize the initiative and turn the tables on her.
"Then what did you mean by telling Nina Jennings to have her people withdraw? You had this place surrounded?! Were you planning to attack me?!"
Yvonne Lowell scoffed. "Isn’t that normal? Did you expect me to come here alone and unprepared? Besides, didn’t you have people hiding in your room, too?"
"I was just taking precautions! We were thinking the same thing!" Leo Grant blustered, trying to sound confident even though he was in the wrong.
"Could you please stay on topic? Who was talking about that?" Yvonne Lowell rolled her eyes irritably, poking his chest with her index finger as she enunciated each word.
"I’m ugly? Unpresentable? You have high standards? You think you’re too good for me? You wanted me to come here and never return? Hmm?"
Leo Grant couldn’t help but shiver, raising his hands in surrender. "I was wrong, babe, I really was. I swear, I just heard a strange woman’s voice and didn’t even take a good look."
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. "So what you’re saying is, you didn’t even give me a second thought?"
’A resigned smile flickered in Leo Grant’s eyes. Knowing her as he did, he should have realized from the beginning. The moment she took off that mask, there was no way she would let his words slide.’
’He used to scoff when he saw his old man tearing his hair out trying to placate his mother. Now, the tables had turned.’
’There was an unavoidable sixteen-word mantra in life: Question Old Man Grant, Understand Old Man Grant, Become Old Man Grant, Surpass Old Man Grant.’
’For the men of the Grant Family, placating their wives was a skill passed down through endless generations. And what’s more, every single one of them seemed to delight in it.’
Leo Grant grabbed her hand. "But I didn’t know it was you, okay? It’s a negotiation tactic! You can’t lose your momentum right at the start, right?"
"And think about it! I deliberately kept a huge distance from you earlier. Doesn’t that prove how faithful I am? It shows that my eyes and my heart only have room for you, and no one else."
Yvonne Lowell gave him a faint, teasing smile. "Isn’t that just because you’re gynophobic?"
’That explains why Ian Lynch’s expression looked so complicated when I entered, and why I felt a fluctuation of spiritual power from him.’
"Being gynophobic is part of it, but the main reason is you, of course. You see? I’m always mindful of my identity as your child husband, never letting other women get close to me."
"Didn’t ’Lila’ just hit on me for my good looks? But I righteously refused her, because I know full well that I am a taken man."
Yvonne Lowell looked at him with disgust. "Where did you learn to be so cheesy? Can you stop?"
Seeing her tone soften, Leo Grant seized the opportunity to pull her into his arms and peck her lightly on the lips.
"If it makes my girlfriend happy, I don’t need my pride. What’s a little cheesiness in comparison?"
"But you..."
SMOOCH!
"I..."
SMOOCH!
"If you don’t forgive me, I’ll just keep kissing you," he said, leaning in again.
Yvonne Lowell laughed in exasperation. ’Is this guy a reincarnated woodpecker or something?’
She pinched his lips together with two fingers. "Okay, okay, I’m not mad anymore. Stop your pecking."
Leo Grant nodded obediently. "MM-HMM!!!"
But the moment Yvonne Lowell let go, he landed another one. "SMOOCH!"
Before she could get angry, Leo Grant quickly blurted out, "That was the last one! A freebie!"
Yvonne Lowell rolled her eyes, pushed him away, and walked over to the meditation cushion where he had just been sitting.
"You said earlier that you own this teahouse?"
"Yes. Rainwood Manor is my private room. It isn’t open to the public, and the decor is different from the other rooms. Before you returned, my life in Kingsland was a simple routine: the company, home, and here."
Leo Grant hugged her from behind, resting his chin on her shoulder. "I usually just come here to meditate and chant sutras to quiet my mind. I was worried you’d think I was boring, so I never brought you here."
"I won’t," Yvonne Lowell said softly, stroking his prickly head resting on her shoulder. "You don’t have to always go out of your way to cater to my preferences. Just be yourself."
’Because if it’s with you, I could never be bored.’
Leo Grant buried his head in Yvonne Lowell’s neck, his voice light and cheerful as he replied, "I understand."
After a pause, he continued, "I have some skill in drawing, and I grew up reading a lot of books on the subject at my grandfather’s house. I got really interested and even drew some designs of my own. Eventually, I wanted to make a name for myself on the international stage, so I started recruiting talent in the field and established G Group."
"When Lila first burst onto the scene, I actually extended an invitation to her. I just never imagined that Lila had already been affiliated with LY from the very beginning."
Yvonne Lowell raised an eyebrow. ’Is he baring his soul to me?’
"Ahem, well... I’ve actually sold you designs before, just under a different name: Doctor Octopus."
She had been obsessed with the character of Doctor Octopus back then. Her house on Continent M was still filled with tons of merch and large octopus plushies.
If Nina Jennings hadn’t vehemently stopped her, she might have even gotten a few large octopuses to keep at headquarters.
"What?!" Leo Grant exclaimed in astonishment. "You’re Doctor Octopus, too?!"
