GEM TALENT

Chapter 150: 150: CAPTAIN WILLIAM

William woke up early the next morning and went straight to the training ground. He wanted to prepare well for the big match against Newcastle United.

The morning air felt cold, but the young midfielder ran across the green pitch with boundless energy. He practiced his long passes and worked on his stamina because he knew the upcoming game would require a lot of running.

William wanted to dominate the center of the field and stop any counter attack from the opposition. He spent extra hours on the grass to perfect his ball control and body movement.

During the tactical sessions, the coaching staff focused on retaining possession and breaking through tight defensive lines. Coach Lincoln made the players practice their overlaps and crosses from the wide areas.

William pictured himself making a perfect interception or a strong clearance to protect his penalty area. He knew the Newcastle attackers were fast, so he trained his mind to read the game better. The thought of facing his old friend Kyle made him push his physical limits.

Kyle was a great player with plenty of speed, and he knew all of Blackpool's secrets. William needed to be at his absolute best to win the midfield battle. He stayed behind after the regular team sessions to practice his free kicks near the penalty box.

He hit the leather ball with power and watched it curve into the top corner of the net. His mind was set on victory, and nothing could break his strong concentration on the football pitch.

While William poured his sweat on the training ground, his personal life also demanded some attention. Kate kept in touch with William every single day, and she tried some clever tricks to make him fall for her.

She sent him pictures of herself wearing beautiful dresses to catch his attention while he rested at home. Sometimes, she baked sweet chocolate cookies and dropped them off at his front door with a cute romantic note attached to the box.

She even sent him late messages to talk about romantic movies, hoping to spark some deep feelings in his heart. Kate called his phone to praise his handsome looks and called him her favorite football hero.

"I made these cookies just for you, William," Kate said during one of their evening phone calls.

"I hope they bring some sweetness to your hard training days. We should go to the cinema this weekend to celebrate your upcoming birthday together in a cozy place." These gestures were sweet, but William saw through the romantic tricks.

He appreciated the nice cookies, yet he maintained a clear boundary in his replies. William was just focused on his football career. He kept it in his mind that he would not go into a relationship right now to avoid distractions.

The Premier League demanded a lot of time and energy, and he wanted to give his whole heart to the game. He told himself that a romance would steal his focus from his big dreams. Therefore, he replied to Kate with polite words and kept the conversations short and simple.

"Thank you for the cookies, Kate, they are delicious," William replied over the phone. "But I must rest and focus on my next match. I do not have time for cinema dates right now." He wanted to be a good friend, and he refused to let any romantic feelings cloud his vision. He wanted to succeed in football first before exploring love.

-------------------------------------

The busy days passed like a blur, and the match against Newcastle came so quickly. William woke up with a big smile on his face because today was a very special day in his life. It was his eighteenth birthday, and he felt a surge of pride as he packed his sports bag in his quiet bedroom.

He received many birthday messages, but his mind remained fixed on the pitch. He had prepared himself for this match with intense dedication and hard work. He did not know if he would start the game that day, but he was more prepared to face Newcastle and Kyle than ever before.

He arrived at the massive stadium with his teammates, and the sound of the cheering fans outside boosted his confidence. The supporters sang loud songs and waved their bright tangerine flags in the air.

William looked out of the team bus window and saw the Newcastle United bus parked near the stadium entrance. He knew Kyle was somewhere inside that bus, wearing a different jersey and preparing to defeat Blackpool. This thought ignited a fierce fire in William's chest.

The players walked down the long tunnel and entered the quiet dressing room to change into their match kits. William put on his bright orange jersey and tied his boots with firm knots. He looked around the room and saw the determined faces of his friends.

They all wanted to win this home game and climb higher in the league table. The room smelled like fresh grass and massage oil, and a heavy tension hung in the air. The players took their seats on the wooden benches and waited for the manager to speak. William sat next to Eric, and they shared a look of pure readiness.

The heavy wooden door opened, and Coach Lincoln walked into the dressing room with his tactical board tucked under his arm. The noisy room fell silent as the manager stood in the center.

He looked at his players and cleared his throat to announce the starting lineup for the afternoon clash. He pointed his black marker at the board and read the names of the defenders and the goalkeeper who would protect the net. Then, he reached the midfield section and paused for a brief moment.

Coach Lincoln looked at the squad and delivered a shocking piece of news.

"Fernandes and Coleman will not start today," the coach said in a firm tone. Everyone in the room was surprised by this sudden change. The players exchanged confused looks because Fernandes and Coleman were the experienced leaders of the team.

Dropping both veteran players for such a big match against a strong opponent was a huge risk. The room filled with quiet whispers, and the defenders wondered who would lead the midfield against a tough team like Newcastle.

Coach Lincoln raised his hand to quiet the room, and he turned his eyes to the young birthday boy sitting in the corner.

"William, you will start the game today in the central midfield position," the manager said with a proud smile. The room remained silent as the coach continued his speech.

"Furthermore, you will take the captain band and lead the squad out to the pitch today to celebrate your birthday. This is to show you that you are also a true leader in this family. You have shown maturity, great vision, and incredible dedication since you returned to this club. Today, you take charge of the midfield."

William was shocked by the massive announcement. His eyes went wide, and his heart pounded against his ribs like a heavy drum. He could not believe that the manager trusted him with such a huge responsibility on his eighteenth birthday.

He looked across the room at the team captain, Fernandes, and the assistant captain, Coleman, expecting them to look upset. Instead of looking angry, the two older players smiled and gave him a positive nod. They showed their full support and wanted him to embrace this special moment.

The nod from the veterans gave William a massive burst of courage. William stood up from his wooden bench and appreciated this great gesture from the club. He thanked the manager and his teammates for believing in his young talent.

His voice shook a little bit, but he spoke with deep gratitude. He walked to the center of the room, and Fernandes handed him the bright captain armband. William wore his captain band around his left arm, and he felt a heavy but wonderful weight on his shoulder.

He adjusted the fabric and looked at the club crest on his chest. He also took the club tag, that small colorful cloth pennant that the captain uses to exchange with the opponent before the kickoff. He grabbed the pennant with a firm grip and stood at the front of his other teammates.

He looked at his squad with a fierce determination in his bright eyes. The players stood up and clapped for him, ready to follow his lead into the stadium. Standing there with the armband made him the first ever young captain in the Premier League at just eighteen years of age.

He was ready to make history, defeat Newcastle, and prove that his age was just a number. The referee blew a short whistle from the hallway, signaling that it was time to step onto the grass. William puffed out his chest, held the club tag tight, and marched toward the tunnel. The battle against his old friend Kyle was about to begin, and the new captain was ready to conquer the pitch.
