GEM TALENT

Chapter 149: 149: A LOVE HE CANNOT GIVE

William arrived at his quiet house and opened the front wooden door with a heavy sigh. He dropped his small sports bag on the living room floor and sank into the soft fabric sofa.

His leg muscles ached from the intense football match, and his mind replayed the brutal actions on the green pitch. He closed his eyes and remembered the fierce tackles in the midfield area.

He thought about the crucial interceptions he made to win back possession for his team. He pictured the fast counter attacks his team launched, and he remembered the smart overlapping runs from the fullbacks.

His mind visualised the dangerous crosses flying into the penalty area and dropping near the near post. The stadium noise echoed in his ears as he thought about the desperate clearances, the defensive headers, and the tight marking inside the box.

He recalled the sharp offside calls from the assistant referee and the tense moments defending a curved free kick and an inswinging corner. He felt proud of his Premier League debut because he survived the physical battle and helped his beloved team secure the win.

Just as he rested his head against the soft cushions in the silent room, his mobile phone began to ring on the glass table. William reached out and picked up the phone. He looked at the bright screen and saw a familiar name. The first person to call him was Kate, the beautiful girl he met at the sunny beach a few days ago.

William pressed the green button and placed the phone against his ear.

"Hello, Kate," he said with a warm smile on his face. Kate's sweet voice came through the phone speaker, and she sounded happy to hear him. She called to congratulate William for his official Premier League debut and also to check up on his tired body after the tough game.

"I watched the whole match on my television in my living room, William," Kate said with pure excitement in her voice.

"You played so well today, and I am so proud of you. I saw you controlling the heavy ball in the midfield and making those amazing passes to the forwards." William loved this kind gesture, and he thanked Kate for her sweet words and her loyal support.

"Thank you, Kate. The game was difficult because the opponents were strong, but we managed to get the win in the end. I appreciate your sweet message and your care," he replied.

They continued to talk about the stadium atmosphere and the loud fans singing his name at the end of the match. William felt happy to have someone check up on him, and the casual conversation flowed easy between them. He felt a sense of comfort hearing a friendly voice after such a demanding day of physical stress.

William and Kate chatted for about thirty minutes on the phone, and the long duration allowed them to discuss many different topics. As the minutes passed, the topic of their conversation changed from football tactics to personal feelings.

Kate wanted to date him, and she started giving some love gestures to William through her sweet words.

"You know, William, I have not stopped thinking about you since we met at the common beach," Kate said in a soft and romantic tone.

"You are handsome and kind, and I would love to take you out for a nice dinner this weekend. We could spend more time together and get to know each other better in a private place. I feel a special connection with you, and I want to explore this feeling."

William listened to her sweet words, but a strong doubt remained in his mind about Kate and her sudden romantic intentions. Even though she was beautiful and friendly, the clear picture of the first girl he met at the beach was still playing actively in his head. He could not erase the memory of that mysterious girl, and his young heart belonged to that magical first sight.

Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the face of the first girl, and this made him hesitate. Because of this lingering memory, William was restricting his own emotions and maintaining a strict limit during the phone call. He did not want to lead Kate on or give her false hope.

"You are a wonderful person, Kate," William said while taking time to choose his words. "I enjoy talking to you, and I think you are a beautiful girl. But I want us to remain good friends for now, because my life is a bit complicated."

Kate sounded a bit sad upon hearing his rejection, but she tried to push further to win his heart.

"Are you sure, William? We could be a great couple, and we would look good together. I can take care of you after your long training sessions, and I can be your number one fan in the stadium stands. Love is a beautiful thing, and we should give it a chance to grow between us."

William shook his head, and he maintained his firm stance. He did not want to fall in love wrongly, and he knew that forcing a relationship without true feelings would hurt both of them in the end.

"I understand what you mean, Kate," William replied with a gentle and respectful voice.

"Love is indeed beautiful, but it needs the right time and genuine feelings from both sides to work out. My life is busy with football right now, and my mind is focused on my professional career in the new league. I do not want to rush into dating and make a terrible mistake. You deserve someone who can give you their whole heart without any doubts, and I cannot do that right now because my heart is not fully ready."

Kate went silent for a few seconds on the other end of the line, and William could hear her taking a deep breath. She respected his honesty, but she still wanted to understand his mindset.

"Is there someone else in your life, William?" Kate asked in a quiet voice.

"You speak like a boy who already gave his heart to another person."

William felt a sudden spike in his heartbeat when she asked that direct question. He thought about the mysterious girl from the beach again, and he wondered if he should tell Kate the truth. He decided to keep his secret safe, so he gave a simple answer.

"There is no official girlfriend in my life, Kate. I just want to protect my peace of mind and focus on my football matches. The Premier League demands a lot of dedication, and I must give my absolute best to the club and the fans. I hope you can understand my position and accept my friendship."

Kate let out a soft laugh, and the tension in the phone call disappeared.

"I understand, William. You are a dedicated athlete, and I respect your clear boundaries. I will not push you into a romantic relationship against your will. We can be good friends, and I will continue to support you from the stands during your home games. Just promise me that you will call me sometimes so we can chat like this."

William smiled, and he felt a massive weight lift off his chest. He managed to maintain his limits without losing a good friend. "I promise, Kate. You are a good friend, and I appreciate your understanding. We will talk again soon, and maybe we can grab a casual cup of coffee together with my friends in the future."

After some times passed and the conversation became a bit repetitive, William decided it was time to end the phone call. He felt tired from the long day, and the emotional talk drained his remaining energy.

William told Kate that he wants to do something around the house just to look for a polite excuse to hang up the phone.

"Kate, I need to go now," William said into the receiver. "I have some chores to finish in the house, and I must arrange my training gear for the next session."

"Okay, William," Kate replied with a cheerful voice. "Have a good night, and rest your tired legs. I will talk to you later."

William said a warm goodbye, and he cut the call. He placed the mobile phone back on the glass table and took a deep breath of relief. The house was silent again, and his empty stomach let out a loud rumble to remind him that he had not eaten any food since the match ended hours ago.

William stood up from the comfortable sofa and walked down the short hallway of his home. He went straight to the kitchen to prepare dinner for himself. He opened the cold fridge and took out some fresh vegetables, a piece of chicken, and a bowl of rice.

He placed the ingredients on the kitchen counter and started chopping the food on the wooden board. As he cooked his warm meal, his mind drifted back to the mysterious girl from the beach, and he hoped he would see her beautiful face again one day.
