Chapter 62: 62: THE WAR FOR THE STARTING SPOT (2)
----------------
While William pushed himself up off the cold, damp ground, the memory of his father's wise advice flickered through his mind like a guiding light in a dark room.
His father had once sat him down on their small porch back home and told him that as a person climbs higher toward success, they will naturally encounter more enemies who want to see them fail.
"The more you achieve, the more shadows
will try to follow you, William," his father had said with a calm voice, "but your job is not to fight the shadows, your job is to ignore the noise and stay locked on your own dream until you reach the end."
These words echoed in his ears now, helping him to push down the anger he felt toward Kyle's cruel comments, and he decided right then that he would not let the newcomer's
arrogance distract him from the path he had worked so hard to build.
The quiet moment of reflection was suddenly interrupted by the loud, rhythmic blast of Coach Lincoln's silver whistle, which signaled for everyone to gather back into a tight circle at the center of the pitch. The players dragged their heavy feet across the grass, their faces still red from the thirty-minute jog, but the coach looked as energized as if the day had only just begun.
"Listen up, because I want you to understand exactly why I just pushed your bodies to the
absolute breaking point," Lincoln said, his eyes scanning the exhausted faces of his squad. "That endurance drill wasn't designed to punish you, it was designed to give you the stamina to outlast every other team in this league so that even in the final minutes of a match, you don't get tired or lose your focus."
He paused for a second to let the message sink in, and the players nodded slowly as they realized the tactical advantage of having superior lung capacity.
"If you want to be champions, you have to be able to run when everyone else is walking, and I am telling you now that we are going to be doing much more of this kind of training in the future, because when you get to the Premier League, you are going to meet tough teams than these ones in Championship," the coach added with a firm nod.
The announcement brought a few quiet groans from the more tired players, but William stood tall, accepting the challenge because he knew that a warrior's body had to be forged in the fire of hard work. He could feel Kyle's eyes on him from across the circle, but he kept his gaze fixed on the coach, refusing to give the man
the satisfaction of a reaction.
Coach Lincoln then signaled for the assistant, Coach Adam to bring out the equipment bags,
and he gestured toward a section of the field where a sea of brightly colored plastic markers had been laid out.
"Now that your heart rates are up, we are
moving straight into cone work to test your agility and your technical precision under fatigue," he commanded, and the players shuffled toward the drill area. This wasn't the simple, slow running that a child might do in a park; this was high-level professional work that required every ounce of concentration.
The green, yellow and orange cones were arranged in intricate, zigzag patterns and tight
"L-drills" that forced the players to keep their centers of gravity low to the ground while they navigated the small spaces.
William stepped up to the first station, and as the whistle blew, he exploded into a series of rapid-fire movements that showcased his natural balance. He performed the "slalom" run, weaving his body between the markers with short, choppy steps that allowed him to change direction in a split second without
losing his momentum.
He focused on his body shape, making sure his shoulders were tucked and his eyes were looking forward, just as a professional midfielder should when navigating a crowded center circle. After the slalom, he moved into
the "box-drill," where he had to sprint forward, shuffle laterally, and then backpedal with enough speed to mimic a defender trying to keep up with a fast-moving winger.
The wet grass made the ground slippery and dangerous, yet William's metallic studs gripped the turf firmly, and he moved with a level of grace that showed he was far from being "finished" as Kyle had predicted.
The cone work continued for several rounds, with each player trying to outdo the person in front of them, and the atmosphere on the pitch began to crackle with a new sense of competition. When the agility drills finally came to an end, the players were breathing hard once more, but Coach Lincoln didn't give them a moment to relax.
Instead, he pulled out a stack of blue and yellow training bibs and began to read out names for a specialized scrimmage session.
"I'm splitting the squad into two groups today because I want to see how you handle pressure in a simulated match environment," Lincoln explained, his voice carrying a new
weight of importance.
The players watched with bated breath as the coach began to assign positions, and a murmur of surprise went through the group when they realized what he was doing. Lincoln was purposefully putting players who played the same position on opposite teams, meaning that rivals would be forced to go head-to-head in a direct battle for dominance.
"In the blue team, playing as the central
midfielder, I have William," Lincoln announced, and he tossed a blue bib toward him, which William caught with a steady hand. The coach then looked directly at the newcomer with a sharp, analytical gaze. "And in the yellow team, playing in that same central midfield role against him, we have Kyle."
The silence that followed was heavy and thick with tension, and William could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on his shoulders. This was no longer nust a regular training session; it was a personal duel that would be played out in front of the entire coaching staff and the rest of the squad.
"I want you to play like this is a real league match against Swansea, and I want you to show me that you have the hunger to win every single ball," Lincoln instructed, his voice echoing across the quiet facility. "I am watching every movement you make, and I want everyone to know that whoever impresses me the most today will be the
one in the starting lineup for our match this Sunday."
The ultimatum sent a shockwave through William's system, and he felt a surge of
adrenaline that cleared away the last traces of his physical fatigue. He knew that this was the "real challenge" he had been waiting for, and it was the perfect opportunity to prove that he belonged on the pitch more than anyone
else.
He looked over at Kyle and saw the man pulling on his yellow bib with a confident, arrogant smirk that seemed to say the starting spot was already his, Kyle whispered something to Reed, who was also on the yellow team, and they both shared a knowing look that made it clear they were going to try to double-team William and shut him down.
William didn't care about their secret alliances or their petty threats, because he was now fully focused on the green grass and the ball that was being placed at the center spot. He realized that Kyle's words about "benching" him were meant to shake his confidence, but instead, they had only served to wake up the
warrior inside him. He knew that the stakes had never been higher, because if he failed today, he might lose everything he had worked so hard to achieve during this incredible season, and he had not made a lot of impact in Blackpool yet, he wants to leave the club with pride that he helped them.
He took a deep breath, feeling the cold air fill his lungs, even though this was just a
practice match.
As the players moved into their respective positions, the atmosphere on the pitch felt like a pressure cooker that was about to explode. William stood in the center circle, his eyes locked on Kyle, who was standing just a few feet away with a predatory look in his eyes.
The rest of the team felt the tension too, and even the coaches seemed to lean forward in anticipation of the battle that was about to begin. William felt a sense of calm resolve wash over him, and he made a silent promise to himself that he would outwork, outrun, and outthink his rival in every single minute of the scrimmage.
He was ready for the challenge, and as he waited for the sound of the whistle, he knew that the fight for his future was about to reach a whole new level of intensity.
