Chapter 61: 61: THE WAR FOR THE STARTING SPOT(1)
-----------------------------------
The echoes of Coach Lincoln's serious speech still lingered in the cold morning air, but there was no time for the players to reflect on his words because the atmosphere suddenly shifted from talk to action.
Coach Lincoln raised his silver whistle to his lips once more, and with a sharp wave of his hand, he commanded the entire squad to spread out across the width of the lush, green pitch.
He told them to form straight lines with enough space between each player so that they wouldn't collide, and as William moved into his position, he could feel the nervous energy vibrating through the rest of the team. The players stood like soldiers on a battlefield, their eyes fixed on the coach while they waited for
the next instruction, and the silence that followed was only broken by the distant sound of a bird chirping in the misty trees nearby.
Suddenly, the shrill blast of the whistle pierced through the quiet morning, signaling the official beginning of the training session that would test their very souls. As the players started their initial jog, Coach Lincoln began to pace along the sidelines like a hungry lion, and he started shouting at the top of his lungs so that everyone could hear him clearly over the sound of their rhythmic footsteps.
"You all need to pay attention and listen carefully, because today we are not just practicing football," Lincoln roared, his face turning a slight shade of red from the effort of his shouting.
"Today, we are pushing and training beyond every limit you thought you had, and I will not accept anything less than total devotion to the cause."
This specific choice of words caught the immediate attention of the entire team, and a wave of realization washed over the players as they processed what the coach had just said. They had expected a difficult session, but they didn't truly expect Lincoln to explicitly state that they were going to go beyond their
physical and mental limits quite so early in the morning.
William felt a momentary flicker of worry in his chest because his muscles were already heavy from his late-night biology study session, and he knew that "beyond limit" meant he would have to find a hidden reservoir of strength within himself.
However, he gritted his teeth and adjusted his stride, focusing his mind on the emerald
grass in front of him while the cold wind whipped against his face.
Coach Lincoln didn't give them a single second to rest or complain, and he continued to shout his instructions as the pace of the jog began to intensify.
"You will be jogging at a high tempo for the next twenty-five minutes without a single moment of rest, and if I see anyone slowing down, the whole team will start over from zero!" he screamed, his voice echoing off the walls of the training facility.
"Move, move! Don't let your legs get tired and don't let your minds give up, because Premier League qualification is for Blackpool too, and we must ensure we are playing in the top league next season!"
These words sounded like a powerful surge of encouragement to the team, and even though their lungs were starting to burn, the dream of the Premier League acted like a fuel that
pushed them forward.
As the minutes ticked by, the jogging session became a grueling test of endurance that felt like it would never end. William could hear the heavy, ragged breathing of his teammates all around him, and the sound of their boots
hitting the damp turf became a hypnotic drumbeat that filled his ears.
He focused on his breathing, taking deep gulps of the biting air to keep his oxygen
levels up, while he tried to ignore the sharp ache that was beginning to blossom in his calves.
He looked over at Kyle, who was running with a graceful, effortless motion that suggested he wasn't even breaking a sweat, and then he
looked at Reed, whose face was contorted in a mask of pure agony and determination.
The twenty-five-minute mark passed, but Coach Lincoln showed no signs of stopping the session, and he continued to urge them on with even more passion than before.
"Think about the fans who are waiting for us to succeed, and think about the history we are making with every step we take!" Lincoln shouted, his eyes darting from player to player to check for any signs of weakness.
"We are one unit, one heart, and one soul, so do not let your brothers down by being the
first one to quit!" The players pushed themselves beyond what they thought they
could do, their bodies moving on pure instinct as the fatigue began to cloud their vision and make their limbs feel like heavy lead weights.
Finally, after thirty long and agonizing minutes of continuous, high-paced movement, the coach blew his whistle three times to signal the end of the endurance session. The effect was instantaneous, as the players, including
William, completely collapsed and lied down on the pitch, their bodies surrendered to the overwhelming exhaustion.
William fell onto his back, his chest heaving as he gasped for air, and he felt the cold moisture of the grass soaking through his training jersey. His heart was pounding so hard against his
ribs that it felt like it might burst, and for a few moments, the world around him was nothing but a blur of gray sky and green turf.
The silence on the pitch was now filled with the sound of thirty men trying to regain their breath, and the intense smell of sweat and damp earth hung heavily in the air. William closed his eyes for a second, trying to settle his racing mind and get his strength back so he could prepare for the tactical drills that
were surely coming next.
He felt a sense of pride for having finished the run without stopping, and he realized that the mental toughness he used for his academic studies was the same toughness he needed to survive Coach Lincoln's brutal training regimes. He was just starting to feel a tiny bit of sensation return to his numb toes when the sound of voices nearby caught his attention.
While William was lying there motionless, trying to find the energy to even sit up, he heard a familiar voice speaking in a low, cold tone that sent a different kind of chill down his spine.
It was Kyle, who was standing just a few feet away with Reed and a couple of other players who weren't fans of William. Kyle didn't seem to realize that William was close enough to hear him, or perhaps he simply didn't care if his words were overheard.
"Look at him over there, looking like he's about to die after a simple jog," Kyle said, his voice dripping with a level of arrogance and cruelty that William hadn't expected to hear so soon.
William kept his eyes closed and remained perfectly still, acting as if he were still deeply exhausted so that he could hear exactly what the newcomer had to say. Kyle continued to speak, and his words were like sharp daggers aimed directly at William's future and his hard-earned reputation.
"He is definitely not someone who looks like he will be a great player in the future, and I
honestly don't understand why the coach thinks he's so special," Kyle sneered, and William could practically hear the smirk on his face. "I didn't come all the way from Milan to play second fiddle to a boy with fast legs and no real pedigree."
The conversation took an even darker turn as Kyle made a vow that revealed his true intentions for being at the club.
"Mark my words, I am going to make sure
that I bench William before the month is over, and I am going to end his career by pushing him so far back into the shadows that he'll never see the pitch again,"
Kyle declared with a chilling level of confidence. He laughed a short, dry laugh that was joined by a quiet chuckle from Reed, who seemed to be enjoying the idea of William's downfall more than anyone else.
"A player like him doesn't belong in the starting eleven of a team going to the Premier League,
and I will be the one to show everyone exactly why he is a failure."
William felt a surge of cold fury rising up from his stomach, but he didn't move a single muscle and he didn't open his eyes to confront them. The exhaustion in his body was suddenly replaced by a burning desire to prove Kyle wrong, and the betrayal he felt from the newcomer was now a weapon he could use to sharpen his own focus.
He realized that the friendly "welcome" from earlier was a complete lie, and that he was now locked in a silent war for survival within his own
team.
As the other players began to stand up and move away, William remained on the grass for one more minute, his mind racing with a new, dangerous level of intensity that he had never felt before. He knew that the battle for his career had officially begun, and he was ready to fight.
