Chapter 85 : Fake Boyfriend
The next day, Mark found himself sitting in a salon chair while a hairdresser carefully applied blonde dye to his hair.
"Yes, that’s it. Make it completely blonde. Don’t leave a single strand white," Satomi said as she watched from the side.
The hairdresser looked at Mark’s naturally white hair with a puzzled expression.
"I don’t really understand," she admitted. "His white hair is beautiful. Why dye it?"
Satomi waved her hand dismissively.
"Because it attracts way too much attention. I need him to look as normal as possible."
The hairdresser glanced between the two of them.
Mark sat quietly in the chair, looking half-asleep while the dye was worked through his hair.
Watching the way Satomi kept fussing over him, the hairdresser couldn’t help drawing her own conclusion.
Poor girl... she must’ve been worried another woman would steal her boyfriend because of his looks.
A sympathetic smile appeared on her face.
"Don’t worry," she said confidently. "I’ll do my best."
"Can you two stop speaking in Japanese? I don’t understand anything you’re saying," Mark said.
He wasn’t actually against dyeing his hair. It had been blonde to begin with before the Gojo template turned it white, so he didn’t really mind changing it back.
"I’m not saying anything important," Satomi replied with an innocent smile. "I was just telling her to make you look more handsome."
As she said that, she grabbed the salon chair and gave it a playful spin.
Mark immediately planted his feet on the floor, bringing the chair to a stop before it could rotate any further.
"...Can you stop doing that?"
Satomi only laughed before turning back to the hairdresser.
"Make him look as normal as possible," she said in Japanese.
The hairdresser smiled and nodded.
"I’ll do my best."
After some time, the hairdresser finished washing the dye out of his hair.
Mark looked at his reflection.
The white hair was gone.
It had returned to its original blonde color.
"Hmm... nice. Back to normal," Mark said.
As they walked out of the salon, Satomi handed him a small box.
Mark opened it.
Inside was a pair of brown contact lenses.
"Well... thanks," he said.
He had already grown tired of wearing dark glasses all the time, so he had asked Satomi to buy him contact lenses that would completely hide the distinctive blue glow of the Six Eyes.
After putting them on, he looked at his reflection in a nearby shop window.
The strange blue eyes had disappeared, replaced by ordinary brown ones.
Satomi gave him an approving nod.
"Yep. Now you actually look normal."
Mark looked at her for a moment before something crossed his mind.
"By the way... how did they even allow me to stay at Jujutsu High?"
He narrowed his eyes.
"Did you tell them everything about me?"
Satomi shook her head without the slightest hint of guilt.
"Nope."
Mark waited.
"I just told them you’re... you know..."
She coughed into her fist.
"...my beneficial boyfriend."
Mark stared at her.
"...Ummm... what?"
Mark looked at her with a confused expression.
"...Can I ask one thing?"
"Sure."
"How exactly did I become your boyfriend?"
Satomi answered without the slightest hesitation.
"Because I needed an excuse to hide who you really are."
Mark stared at her.
"...That’s the excuse you came up with?"
She nodded as though it were perfectly obvious.
"Think about it. If I brought a mysterious foreigner to Jujutsu High and couldn’t explain why he was following me around, everyone would start asking questions."
She folded her arms.
"So I simply told them you were my boyfriend. Since you were from overseas, it wasn’t strange for you to stay with me while getting used to Japan. Besides, wanting my boyfriend to work and stay at the same place as me is a perfectly normal reason."
Mark couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
"...And they actually accepted that?"
"Of course they did."
"Nobody questioned it for even a second."
She gave him a playful look.
"Everyone became more interested in the fact that I had a boyfriend than in asking about your background."
Mark let out a long sigh.
"So the whole story was just a cover."
"Exactly."
She pointed at him.
"Nobody is digging into your past, and nobody is asking where you came from. As long as that doesn’t happen, your secret stays safe."
Mark shook his head.
"I still think you could’ve come up with literally any other excuse."
Satomi laughed.
"Maybe."
She shrugged.
"But this one worked, didn’t it?"
"If you want, I can tell everyone the truth," Satomi said with a shrug. "But then you’ll have a bunch of old men chasing after you, trying to marry their daughters off to you."
Mark blinked.
"...What?"
Satomi nodded as though it were completely normal.
"You’re a rare catch."
Mark couldn’t help imagining a crowd of elderly clan heads sprinting after him while shouting:
"Young man! Marry my daughter!"
"Our family has the better bloodline!"
"Join our clan!"
He immediately shuddered.
"...Can they actually do that?"
Satomi laughed.
"They absolutely can."
She folded her arms.
"A lot of the old jujutsu families still think like they’re living hundreds of years in the past. They care about bloodlines, inherited techniques, and arranged marriages."
She glanced at Mark.
"If someone like you suddenly appeared, every major clan would try to recruit you. If they couldn’t persuade you, the next best option would be marrying you into their family."
Mark looked horrified.
"You’re joking..."
"I’m really not."
Satomi sighed.
"To those old-fashioned families, powerful sorcerers are valuable assets. They believe keeping strong techniques within the family is more important than what the people involved actually want."
She smiled mischievously.
"So trust me."
"My fake boyfriend story is a much better deal than becoming the target of every matchmaking scheme in the jujutsu world."
