Chapter 73 : Unlimited Void
"Heh... the so-called strongest hero isn’t that impressive," Mark said.
Homelander’s expression darkened.
He bent down, grabbed the wrecked car by its frame, and hurled it across the intersection. The vehicle spun through the air toward Mark, who stepped aside just before impact and let it crash into the empty street behind him.
Homelander was already moving.
Twin beams of red light burst from his eyes. The heat vision stopped against Infinity before reaching Mark, but Mark deliberately threw himself backward to sell it, his body crashing through the side of a parked truck.
Homelander closed the distance instantly and drove his fist in, forcing him deeper into the trailer.
The impact ruptured the fuel tank.
BOOM.
Flames rolled across the street, thick black smoke billowing upward as the shockwave rattled nearby buildings and shattered what was left of the windows.
Homelander stepped out of the fire without a mark on him. He turned toward the news cameras and the crowd behind the police barricade, and the public smile returned like a switch had been flipped.
"America is always safe as long as I’m here."
People cheered. Some applauded. Others shouted his name. To them, it was over.
Then someone pointed at the burning truck.
A figure moved through the flames.
The applause stopped.
Mark walked out of the wreckage at an unhurried pace. Apart from soot on his hoodie, he looked completely fine. He brushed ash from one sleeve and looked at Homelander.
"Superhero mouthpieces are tougher than I expected."
The smile disappeared.
Homelander launched himself forward and drove his shoulder into Mark’s stomach with enough force to lift him off the ground.
The pavement beneath his feet shattered as both of them shot into the sky. The city shrank below them, wind roaring past as Homelander accelerated, intending to finish this far from the cameras.
Mark looked down at the streets disappearing beneath them and grinned.
"Well," he said over the wind, "I haven’t used this on anyone before." He raised his hands slowly. "If someone has to be the first... it might as well be America’s greatest hero."
Homelander frowned. "What the hell are you talking about?"
Mark’s fingers crossed into a seal.
"Domain Expansion..."
His smile widened.
"Infinite Void."
The wind stopped.
Homelander’s grip vanished.
For an instant there was no sky, no city, no sound.
Then everything became white.
An endless space stretched in every direction with no horizon, no ground, no distance to measure. Homelander looked around instinctively, trying to make sense of where he was.
Then it hit him.
Everything hit him.
Every sound. Every color. Every sensation. Every possible direction flooding into his mind simultaneously.
His brain tried to process all of it at once and simply couldn’t. His body stopped responding. The momentum carrying them both disappeared and he hung suspended in place, eyes wide, breathing uneven.
"What..."
The word never finished. More information poured in. His thoughts slowed. His eyes struggled to focus. He tried to move his arm — nothing.
He tried to activate his heat vision — his eyes glowed for a fraction of a second before fading. Every intention was interrupted before it could become action.
To anyone watching, he looked completely still. Only his rapidly moving eyes showed he was still conscious.
Mark stood several meters away, arms folded, watching quietly.
"You rely on overwhelming strength to solve every problem," he said. "Unfortunately, strength doesn’t matter here."
Homelander forced himself to focus. His heartbeat thundered. His breathing grew heavier. Somewhere beneath the endless flood of information, something unfamiliar surfaced.
Helplessness.
Mark stepped forward and stopped directly in front of him.
"So, America’s strongest hero..." His voice stayed calm. "How does it feel when your body finally can’t keep up with your mind?"
The domain collapsed.
The void vanished. Open sky above New York. Wind. The distant sound of the city below.
One second had passed in the real world. For Homelander, it had felt considerably longer. Mark had dismissed it almost immediately — he didn’t need to hold it.
Even that brief exposure had been enough. The damage wasn’t physical. Homelander’s mind had been forced to process more than it could handle, and recovering from that would take time.
Homelander’s body dropped.
CRACK. CRASH. BOOM.
He punched through the roof of a parking structure and slammed into the concrete floor below, dust and debris erupting outward from the impact.
The crowd on the streets stared upward in silence.
One moment both of them had disappeared into the sky. The next, only Homelander had come back down.
A few seconds later Mark descended and landed lightly on the street. He looked toward the cameras still broadcasting the scene.
"Well," he said. "This round goes to the villain."
He glanced toward the hole in the parking structure. "As promised, I beat America’s strongest hero."
Nobody cheered. Nobody spoke. The cameras slowly turned toward the wreckage, waiting for Homelander to emerge.
Mark adjusted his hoodie. "See you next time."
He disappeared from the intersection, leaving behind destroyed pavement, dozens of abandoned vehicles, and a crowd trying to process how the strongest hero in America had just lost in front of the entire country.
