THE BOYS: The Wrong Main Character

Chapter 72 : Hero v/s Villian

The afternoon traffic came to a stop as the lights turned red.Pedestrians poured into the intersection from every direction.

Office workers hurried across the crosswalk, parents held their children’s hands, cyclists waited between lanes, and taxis idled behind the white line.

In the middle of the crossing stood a man wearing a black hoodie and a mask over the lower half of his face.

Mark looked around slowly. A faint smile crossed his face.

"Time to give the viewers what they came for," he murmured. "The first fight between Homelander and the Devil."

"And you... the one who threw me into this mess. Watch carefully.

He looked up at the sky. Blue light gathered in his eyes. Two beams shot upward with a deafening crack and disappeared into the clouds.

The sound echoed across the surrounding buildings.

Everyone stopped. Conversations died instantly. Drivers stared through their windshields. Pedestrians looked around in confusion.

Mark took a step forward. "My dear Americans, it’s your favorite villain, the Devil."

Several people recognized the voice immediately.

"Oh my God..." "That’s him!" "The guy from the news!"

Phones came out almost instinctively. People began recording. Mark ignored them.

"I think it’s time America’s greatest hero came to meet me." He slowly swept his eyes across the crowd. "If you don’t want to become collateral damage, leave."

Nobody moved for a second.

Then someone screamed. "Run!"

The hesitation vanished. Parents grabbed their children and pulled them away. A businessman dropped his briefcase and sprinted toward the sidewalk. Several drivers abandoned their cars in the middle of the road.

Car horns blared as vehicles sat motionless with their doors hanging open. People pushed past one another, desperate to get away.

"Move!" "Get out of here!" "He’s going to attack!" "Call the police!" "No, call Homelander!"

Within moments the busy intersection had dissolved into panic. Some people tripped and were pulled back to their feet by strangers. Others ducked behind parked cars or ran into nearby stores. Sirens were already audible somewhere in the distance.

Mark watched the chaos unfold without moving. "Yep," he muttered. "They definitely think I’m a terrorist."

He slipped both hands into his hoodie pocket and looked back toward the sky. Now all that remained was waiting for Homelander to arrive.

Within minutes the first police cars arrived, tires screeching as officers jumped out with weapons drawn.

"Don’t move!" "Hands where we can see them!" "Get on the ground!"

Several officers took cover behind their patrol cars while others pointed their rifles directly at Mark. The civilians who hadn’t managed to escape were hurried behind the police line.

Mark didn’t even look at them. His hands stayed in his pockets as he continued staring at the sky. The officers weren’t his objective. He was waiting for a much bigger fish.

Then a familiar sound cut through the air.

Whoosh.

A blue-and-red figure descended from the sky and landed in the middle of the intersection, the impact sending a small burst of dust across the road.

Homelander.

The moment he landed, every news camera turned toward him. His expression changed instantly into the warm, reassuring smile America knew so well.

"It’s alright, everyone," Homelander said loudly enough for the surrounding cameras to hear. "I’m here now. No terrorist, no villain is going to harm America while I’m around."

Several civilians visibly relaxed. Some even applauded. The police lowered their weapons slightly but kept their attention on Mark.

Homelander took a few steps forward, smile never leaving his face. Only when he was close enough for Mark to hear did the warmth in his eyes disappear. The performance was for the cameras. Nothing more.

"Homelander," Mark said with a faint smile. "How was your morning? Did Stan chew you out? I did get the Compound V from your little terrorist operation, after all."

Homelander’s expression hardened. "You piece of shit. Do you have any idea what you’ve done?"

"I have a pretty good idea."

"I’m going to kill you."

Homelander disappeared in a blur, his fist driving straight toward Mark’s face.

Mark activated his future vision. The next two minutes unfolded in his mind before they happened. He tilted his head slightly. Homelander’s punch sliced through empty air.

Homelander threw another. Then another. Each attack faster than the last, but every time Mark moved only a few inches, avoiding each blow by the narrowest margin.

To everyone watching, it looked impossible. The strongest man on Earth couldn’t land a single hit.

Mark smiled. "So this is America’s strongest hero?"

Homelander clenched his teeth and attacked again, putting even more force behind his punches. Mark calmly stepped around every strike, already knowing exactly where each one would go.

A laugh escaped him. "Hahaha..."

The sound only made Homelander angrier. He charged once more. At the last moment Mark sidestepped, caught Homelander’s cape as he rushed past, and stopped him just long enough to turn him around.

"Now it’s my turn."

Mark stepped in and drove a straight punch into Homelander’s chin. The impact echoed through the intersection. Homelander was blasted backward, crashing into a parked car hard enough to crush the roof and send twisted metal skidding across the street.
