041: What happened?
**Chapter 41**
I didn’t see Sara for the rest of the day. She didn’t even show up for dinner. She told Aunt Elise she wasn’t feeling well, but I knew the real reason. Still, I didn’t try to force a conversation. Sara was strong. If she wanted to talk about what happened, she would do it on her own terms, like an adult.
I did, however, go see Mira. Sara had been acting off earlier, and if anyone knew the full story, it would be her twin.
When I reached Mira’s door, I could hear light rustling inside. I waited until it stopped, then knocked.
“Oh, hey, Tyler.” Mira looked mildly surprised to see me when she opened the door.
“Hey. Do you have a minute?”
She studied me for a second, trying to guess what I wanted, then stepped aside to let me in. The clothes she had been wearing earlier were still on the bed, so my guess that she had been changing was correct.
“You’re not busy, are you?” I asked.
“No. Just about to go to bed.” She gestured at the baggy sleepwear that hid her figure completely.
I nodded. “I won’t take much of your time.”
Before I could even ask, she said, “Is it about Sara?”
I coughed lightly, caught off guard. There was no way Sara would have told her the details of what happened between us earlier. Even twins had limits.
“Yeah,” I admitted. “She was acting strange when she came home earlier. I tried to ask what was wrong, but she was already wasted and went straight to her room.”
“Well, no surprise there.” Mira sighed. “It’s about that jackass Jackson.”
“Did he do something again?” I asked. It seemed unlikely. I had broken his hand only a few days ago, and he should still be recovering in the hospital. Unless some of his friends had decided to mess with her on his behalf. In that case, I would have to pay another visit to the local residents.
“He did.” Mira picked up her phone and showed me a picture of Jackson kissing a girl. I didn’t recognize the girl, but I recognized the background—a hospital room. So while Jackson was still locked up in the hospital, he had already received pleasant visitors.
I didn’t immediately see why this would upset Sara so much. It could have been simple revenge or posturing. Understanding my confusion, Mira explained without me asking.
“She used to be our best friend. The four of us were pretty well known at school for being tight. The problems started when Jackson asked Sara out, and Sara didn’t know that Tanisha—our friend—had a crush on him.”
“And that kicked off the rivalry. Tanisha competed with Sara at every turn. She tried to steal Jackson from her more than once. She finally managed to get a kiss out of him, and that caused a huge fight between Sara and Jackson.”
“But being the soft-hearted idiot she is, Sara eventually forgave him. Long story short, they still hadn’t officially broken up when Tanisha jumped on Jackson again.”
“Jackson, being the dick he is, bragged about it all over the school forums.”
“What really hurt Sara was that she never wanted to compete with Tanisha in the first place. So when Tanisha called her a bitch today—”
“Wait.” I cut her off. The rest of the high-school drama didn’t matter. The insult did. “She called her a what?”
Mira paused, watching me carefully. “She insulted her.”
“I see. Continue.”
“I wasn’t there because I had other plans. From what I heard, Tanisha and her new clique, along with some of Jackson’s friends, ganged up on Sara. There was a big fight. Sara left really upset. Some of the students said she looked like she was about to cry. I figured she went straight for the alcohol.”
None of the extra details mattered to me. I kept my expression mild and asked, “You wouldn’t happen to have the names of all those kids, would you?”
Mira stared at me for a long moment, then sighed and tapped her thighs lightly with her hands. “You shouldn’t get involved, Tyler.”
I didn’t drop it. I placed my hands on her shoulders so she had to look at me.
“Look. Your sister was hurt. You should be upset about that. But there’s not much you can do. I can. So tell me—do you really want the people who insulted your sister that badly to just walk away from it?”
Conflict played across her face. Part of her clearly wanted payback for Sara. Another part didn’t want me dragged into it. I was already involved either way. All I needed was her help.
After another long sigh, she finally said, “Let me think about it, all right? I don’t want to be the reason you get into trouble.”
If I got into real trouble, the person she was actually worried about was Aunt Elise. Not the police or the local kids—Aunt Elise. I understood that well enough. We all knew how scary Aunt Elise could be.
I didn’t push any harder. Pushing too hard would only reduce my chances. I simply nodded and left her with a final line.
“I knew I could count on you.”
She didn’t answer. She just closed the door with another quiet sigh.
I went back to my room and spent the rest of the night the usual way. I wasn’t even particularly horny anymore, despite the blue-ball situation earlier. Worry over Sara had pushed most of that aside—which, considering how much of my life currently revolved around lust, felt almost like an achievement.
I seriously considered that I might need to start going to church.
With those strangely pure thoughts, I went to sleep.
I woke up early the next morning. Even though I didn’t need the exercise, I still put in a short workout just to keep the habit. After a shower, I joined everyone for breakfast. Sara was present, but she avoided looking at me the entire time. That wasn’t exactly subtle. She was practically announcing that something had happened between us. Luckily, no one called her on it—or at least no one said anything out loud.
After breakfast, Sara and Mira got ready for their last day of school. Sasha teased me heavily throughout the meal and then disappeared to her room. I was about to follow her and return the favor when Mira stopped me in the hallway.
She handed me a stack of paper. When I checked, I found names and pictures of several kids around our age.
“You asked for names, didn’t you? I got into the school database and pulled something better. You owe me one now.” She leaned in a little closer. “I heard they hang out together at a bowling place. Not the one we went to last time.”
With that, she left.
She must have figured that names alone weren’t enough, so she added the extra tip. There was still a chance some of them wouldn’t show up at the bowling alley. But there was one place I could be almost certain to find them, even if they weren’t all together—somewhere they would all have to be within a limited area.
I turned to Aunt Elise, who was wiping down the kitchen slab, and helped her finish while stealing glances at the shorter-than-usual sundress she was wearing. It rode high enough to show a generous stretch of her inner thighs. Not quite high enough to flash her ass, but still a welcome sight.
Once the counter was clean, I asked casually, as if the thought had just occurred to me:
“Hey, Aunt… what was the name of Sara and Mira’s school again?”
The one place I was sure I would find them.
Their fricking school.
