Marvel: Reincarnated as Superman

Chapter 148: Arena Night (bonus)

"Alright, drop the act and take off that device around your neck," Daniel said, casting a glance at Valkyrie.

Did she really take him for an idiot? Did she think he couldn’t tell the device she was wearing now was just a fake prop?

"Aren’t you afraid I’ll run away?" Valkyrie took off the counterfeit device and asked with a laugh.

"Feel free to try," Daniel replied smoothly. "I’ll even give you an hour’s head start."

"Hmph!" Valkyrie let out a soft scoff and said nothing more.

"Let’s go. We’ll grab something to eat and then head over to the arena to check things out," Daniel said to the two of them.

As Quill walked past Daniel, he deliberately bumped his shoulder against him and kept walking while rubbing his shoulder.

This guy really never learned his lesson, no matter how many times he suffered for it.

He was still upset about being tricked by Daniel, looking for all the world like a disgruntled housewife, and a very fat one at that.

Daniel felt a shudder of revulsion and quietly put a few more steps between himself and Quill.

During their meal, Valkyrie showed zero self-awareness as a prisoner. Not only did she order a huge amount of food, but she also demanded alcohol, picking only the most expensive options and downing five bottles all by herself!

Quill’s resentment grew even deeper because he was the one footing the bill.

"Some people drink because they’re happy, while others drink to drown their sorrows. Which one are you?" Daniel asked when he saw Valkyrie drinking nonstop.

Valkyrie’s hand paused as she was about to take another drink, but she continued until she finished the bottle in her hand.

"Burp..."

She let out a satisfied burp and said, "To celebrate, of course! Celebrating that I got out of that place, celebrating that I’ve gained my freedom, and that I don’t have to serve anyone anymore!"

Though she was smiling, a subtle glint flashed in her eyes.

"Fair enough."

Daniel had known her for less than a day, so he had no intention of prying into her private affairs. He wasn’t that curious.

When he was in his normal state, Daniel was actually quite respectful of other people and easy to get along with.

In the end, thoroughly buzzed, Valkyrie insisted on inviting the two of them onto her ship to ride to the arena. She even claimed to be on good terms with the arena boss, saying they could bypass buying tickets and fly the ship straight above the arena to watch the fights.

Valkyrie became rather familiar with people once she got drunk. In the end, Daniel and Quill boarded her ship, and just as she had said, the ship made its way through without any obstruction and parked directly above the arena.

The hatch opened, and the three of them simply sat at the entrance with their legs dangling outside.

"Want a drink?" Valkyrie asked, somehow producing another bottle of booze out of nowhere.

Both Daniel and Quill shook their heads. Daniel generally only drank during celebrations, while Quill only drank when hitting on girls at bars. This wasn’t a bar, and this girl was way too fierce.

"Suit yourselves." Valkyrie didn’t mind being turned down. It actually saved her the trouble of using a glass, so she tipped the bottle straight into her mouth.

After chugging the bottle in short order, she noticed the matches hadn’t started yet, so she began making small talk with the two of them.

"Remember those statues on the high tower outside when we came in?" Valkyrie asked.

"I have a vague memory of it," Quill said. "You mean the guy with two heads attached to each other?"

Quill remembered that clearly. When they first entered, he had even made a comment asking what kind of weird creature that vertically stacked, two-headed statue was supposed to be.

"That’s Bi-Beast," Valkyrie explained. "He’s one of the current Four Champions of the arena, and he’s extremely powerful."

"What about the other three?" Quill asked, his curiosity piqued.

"The horse-faced one is named Beta Ray Bill. His homeworld was destroyed, and his body was turned into a cyborg. He hasn’t suffered a single defeat in the arena.

Then there’s Ares, who’s known as the God of War. He always wears a helmet that only reveals his eyes, and no one knows what he really looks like.

Ares is a top-tier master of close-quarters combat. Once he gets within striking distance, his opponent will lose within a few moves!

He’s also proficient with every kind of weapon. Whether it’s a blade, spear, sword, or halberd, he can wield it with ease!

And the last one at the bottom is Man-Thing."

Valkyrie made a disgusted face.

"That guy is covered in slime, totally repulsive! He looks neither human nor ghost, and based on appearance alone, plenty of people refuse to fight him.

His ability is his incredible strength, and his body is also corrosive. But he’s slow, so he’s actually pretty easy to deal with.

Man-Thing was the previous champion, but after the other three arrived here, they defeated him one after another, placing him at the bottom of the four.

Still, he recently put out a bold claim that he’s made a huge breakthrough in strength and plans to climb back to the top and reclaim his honor in the upcoming Championship Night!"

"Does Sakaar not have an active Champion right now?" Quill asked curiously.

"Not yet," Valkyrie shook her head.

"Bill, Ares, and Bi-Beast haven’t lost a single fight. Right now, everyone’s debating which of those three is the strongest.

The Grandmaster keeps hyping them up and delaying their match against each other, but recently he feels the time is right. Word is he’s going to host a Championship Night soon, where all four of them will compete in the same arena, and the last man standing will be the Champion."

At the end, Valkyrie added, "Personally, I’m betting on Ares. His fighting skills are just too perfect. He practically has no weaknesses. I put the entire five million you paid me yesterday on him. Trust me, he’s definitely going to win! Bet on him with me, and I guarantee you’ll make a fortune!"

Valkyrie spoke directly to Quill, who gave her a resentful look. He had almost managed to forget about yesterday’s five million, but with Valkyrie bringing it up, Quill felt his heart ache all over again, as if someone were cutting into an already-open wound.

"What is Championship Night?" Daniel couldn’t help but ask.

"Championship Night is the most grand event on Sakaar. The date isn’t fixed, as it depends on the Grandmaster’s mood. Its whole point is to choose the arena’s absolute Champion.

When it happens, the entirety of Sakaar plunges into a frenzy. People bring their friends to the arena to cheer for the contenders, and whoever fights to the end becomes a household name and a superstar on this planet.

It’s a competition anyone can join. As long as you’re confident enough, you can jump right into the ring, and nobody will stop you.

But over the years, very few people have joined mid-way because the participants chosen by the Grandmaster have all been battle-tested, and everyone knows how strong they are, so no one wants to go on a suicide mission, after all, none of those fighters pull their punches!"

Valkyrie explained, "You arrived just in time. The fight night is about to start soon, so you can enjoy the show.

In a moment, the Four Champions will make their appearance, and you can take a good look at Ares, the warrior I was talking about. Now that is a real warrior!"

Valkyrie instantly turned into one of Ares’s biggest fangirls and kept praising him. Just then, a wave of cheers erupted from inside the arena.

"Look, look! They’re coming out! The second one is Ares. What do you think? Doesn’t he look crazy strong at a glance?" Valkyrie said excitedly.

"Trust me, you can’t go wrong betting on him. You’re guaranteed to make a killing, and then I won’t have to work for years and can buy booze every single day!"

So, it turned out she was a fan of his just to make enough money for booze and to fund her drinking habits.
