Chapter 3: Amusement Park (1)
The next morning, Daniel was violently shaken awake by an overly excited Carol.
"Daniel! Hurry up! We’re leaving soon!"
Still half asleep, Daniel squinted at the clock beside his bed.
"It’s only seven in the morning..."
He answered irritably while trying to pull the blanket back over himself.
"It’s still early!"
"Hurry up, hurry up! Get out of bed already!"
Seeing Daniel trying to go back to sleep, Carol immediately grabbed his head and started shaking him wildly.
After getting assaulted by Carol’s nonsense first thing in the morning, all of Daniel’s sleepiness disappeared instantly.
"I surrender, okay?"
With no other choice, Daniel dragged himself out of bed.
He let out a deep breath, rubbed his eyes, and slowly got dressed.
After washing up, Daniel walked downstairs from the second floor and entered the living room.
John was already fully prepared to leave.
"You slept well, Daniel?" John asked cheerfully.
Daniel yawned loudly.
"Not really. Someone woke me up by force."
John completely ignored the complaint and laughed.
"That’s the spirit! Go eat breakfast, kid. Once you’re done, we’re heading out!"
Clearly, John was excited too.
Honestly, he was even more excited than the kids.
After all, he rarely got the chance to leave town, and today he was finally going to meet his idol.
The man was practically glowing with anticipation.
Daniel looked at the father daughter duo speechlessly.
Weren’t they the ones who had already been to Boston before?
He was the one visiting for the first time!
Both in this life and his previous one, this would technically be Daniel’s first time ever going to Boston.
So why were these two acting more excited than him?
Shaking his head helplessly, Daniel walked to the dining table, grabbed a sandwich, and started eating quietly.
Under Carol’s nonstop urging, he finally finished breakfast.
Then he followed John and Carol out of the house.
John headed into the garage and drove out his old secondhand pickup truck, stopping it proudly in front of the two children.
"Alright, kids, hop in!"
He rolled down the window and grinned at them.
He had even put on aviator sunglasses for the occasion.
Daniel blinked in surprise.
This was the first time he had ever seen John dressed like this.
Honestly...
The man looked weirdly stylish.
Daniel gave him a few extra glances with great interest.
Soon, the two kids climbed into the truck, and the family officially set off for Boston.
The moment they got in the car, Carol excitedly leaned forward.
"Dad! When are we going to the amusement park?"
Daniel instantly felt speechless again.
Such a child.
Spending too much time around Carol was definitely lowering his mental age.
"At first, I thought we could go," John said seriously while driving.
"But plans changed. We might not have time for the amusement park anymore."
He rejected her immediately.
Daniel silently gave his father a thumbs-up in his heart. Truthfully, he wasn’t all that interested in amusement parks anyway.
The moment Carol heard the rejection, all her excitement instantly vanished.
Her head drooped sadly.
The lively energy from earlier disappeared completely.
"...Okay."
Her reply sounded weak and miserable.
John struggled not to laugh.
"First we’re going to meet a friend of mine. After that, we’ll go to the amusement park. Sounds good?"
The man was clearly teasing her on purpose.
"YEAH!"
Carol instantly came back to life.
She looked so excited she nearly jumped out of her seat.
"Daniel, I’ll take you on the go-karts later!" she said happily.
"You can sit in my car. I’m really good at driving!"
"No thanks."
Daniel rejected her coldly.
He had zero interest in go-karts, especially if someone else was driving.
"You want to drive by yourself?" Carol looked shocked.
"But you’re too little. That’d be dangerous."
"I’m not driving either. I’ll just watch you play."
"Really? You’re not gonna play at all? It’s super fun!"
"No."
"...Fine."
Carol looked disappointed for about two seconds before immediately recovering again.
"Then we can ride the pirate ship together! That one’s really fun too. Dad likes it a lot!"
Daniel turned and looked suspiciously at John, who was driving.
He genuinely hadn’t expected his father to enjoy pirate ship rides.
The pickup truck continued down the road.
They passed wide open fields, crossed through several small towns, and finally arrived in Boston sometime after two in the afternoon.
"Wake up, wake up, Daniel! We’re here!"
Daniel was shaken awake by Carol once again.
Because he had woken up too early that morning, he had fallen asleep during the drive.
"Where are we?" Daniel asked groggily.
"At the amusement park!" Carol answered excitedly.
"Wasn’t Dad supposed to meet a friend first?"
"We already did," Carol explained.
"You were sleeping really soundly, so we didn’t wake you."
"...Alright."
"Come on! I’ll take you around!"
Carol grabbed Daniel’s arm excitedly.
"I already made a full plan!"
She proudly pulled out a wrinkled piece of paper from somewhere.
"First roller coaster, then pirate ship, then carousel, and finally go-karts!"
She pointed enthusiastically at the paper while explaining.
"This is the fastest route through the park!"
Then she added proudly.
"Dad and I figured it out together. It’s the ultimate amusement park strategy guide!"
Standing beside them, John nodded proudly.
Daniel suddenly wanted to hold his forehead.
From his perspective as someone raised by a drill sergeant dad in his old life, who always acted like fun police, John really didn’t feel much like a strict father figure.
No harsh discipline.
No serious scolding.
The man treated them more like friends than children.
"Alright!"
John suddenly shouted loudly in public.
"Let’s begin our adventure!"
He was so loud that nearby pedestrians turned to look at them.
Most of them wore friendly smiles.
Their first stop was the roller coaster.
The moment they arrived, Carol grabbed both of them and rushed into the line.
"Can I skip this ride?"
Daniel suddenly spoke up.
"...I’m a little scared."
He genuinely had mild acrophobia.
And roller coasters gave him an overwhelming sense of danger and insecurity.
"Don’t say that, Daniel. You’re a man. You need courage."
John immediately began encouraging him seriously.
He genuinely believed Daniel was frightened.
In fact, John thought this was a wonderful educational opportunity.
Usually Daniel was too mature and well-behaved for his age.
Carol nodded beside him with complete agreement.
"Exactly. I’m not scared at all."
Seeing that escape was impossible, Daniel gave up resisting and silently continued standing in line with them.
Soon, it was finally their turn.
Before boarding, John placed both hands on Daniel’s shoulders seriously.
"You can do it, Daniel."
...
A few minutes later, they got off the roller coaster.
Daniel calmly brushed back his windblown hair and stared expressionlessly at John.
During the ride, Carol had laughed and screamed happily the entire time.
Daniel himself had basically no reaction at all.
He simply closed his eyes and waited for it to end.
But John?
John had screamed louder than anyone on the entire ride.
The man practically sounded like he was fighting for his life.
’And he was lecturing me about courage?’
Daniel stared at him silently.
Expressionless.
"Ahem..."
John coughed awkwardly.
"I just got a little excited. It’s been too long since I last rode one. Hahaha..."
His legs were still trembling slightly.
"That was... a little intense."
Then, pretending nothing had happened, John spoke in a serious tone.
"Actually, I prefer pirate ships more. This roller coaster moves a bit too fast. Honestly, it feels kind of dangerous."
"Really?"
Carol looked completely energized.
"I thought it was perfect!"
Then her eyes lit up again.
"Dad, let’s ride it one more time!"
The moment John heard that, his face turned pale.
That single ride had nearly destroyed him already.
Another round?
Absolutely not.
He waved his hands frantically.
"Nope! I’m done! You and Daniel can go if you want!"
"I’m not interested either," Daniel replied immediately.
He genuinely had no interest in roller coasters.
"In that case, let’s go ride the pirate ship instead!"
Afraid Carol might suddenly come up with some terrifying new idea again, John immediately dragged both children away before she could say anything else.
