Chapter 114: A Fight Worth Winning

The room settled into an uneasy, expectant quiet after Julian’s declaration, Reid and Jayden still gripping his hands, Logan hovering near the foot of the bed, all three of them waiting for whatever came next.

"but," Julian said, and the single word carried enough weight that all three of them straightened at once, "I’m not making this easy. not for any of you. and especially not for you, Logan."

Logan’s jaw tightened, some old, familiar guilt flickering behind his exhausted expression. "I understand," he said quietly. "I don’t expect it to be easy. I don’t think I deserve for it to be easy."

"good," Julian said, "because I’m not giving you forgiveness just because you sat beside an unconscious man and said pretty words for six weeks." His tone stayed calm, even, but something sharp glinted behind it now, testing. "you broke that engagement in front of the entire academy. publicly. cruelly. because you were scared of what people would say about you. I heard every word of your apology, Logan, and I believe you meant it. but meaning it isn’t the same as earning it back."

Logan swallowed hard, nodding slowly. "then tell me what would," he said. "whatever it is. I’ll do it."

Julian studied him for a long, considering moment, something calculating settling behind his calm, unreadable expression. "a fight," he said finally.

Logan blinked. "a— what?"

"a fight," Julian repeated, something almost amused threading through the words now. "you and me. properly. no holding back, no letting me win out of guilt or misplaced chivalry. if you actually manage to beat me, fair and clean, I’ll consider it proof you’re serious about earning this back instead of just talking about it."

"Julian, you just woke up from a six-week coma," Reid said, alarm cutting sharp through his own lingering relief. "you can’t seriously be considering—"

"I didn’t say now," Julian said, glancing toward him with the same calm, unbothered patience. "once I’ve properly recovered. once it’s an actual fair fight instead of me barely standing upright." He turned back toward Logan, something sharp and testing in his gaze. "well? does that sound fair to you, or would you rather I just accepted an apology without asking anything of you at all."

Logan’s jaw set, something resolute settling behind his exhausted features despite the obvious uncertainty. "no," he said. "a fight’s fair. more than fair, honestly, considering everything." He met Julian’s gaze steady and direct. "I’ll win it. properly. I owe you that much, at least."

"we’ll see," Julian said, something almost fond cutting through the calm now, though he didn’t let it fully soften his expression. "I’m not promising anything beyond a fair chance. the rest is up to you."

Logan nodded once, firm and determined, and something in the room’s tension finally eased, Reid and Jayden both exchanging uncertain glances, clearly unsure whether to feel relieved or newly worried about exactly what Julian intended for the rest of them.

"and us," Jayden said carefully, "do we also need to earn something back."

Julian’s mouth curved slightly, calm and unreadable. "we’ll discuss that later," he said. "one complicated negotiation at a time."

Word reached the Emperor within minutes of the healer’s alert, a runner arriving breathless at his private study where he’d been reviewing reports on the capital’s ongoing reconstruction.

"Your Majesty," the runner gasped, "Guide Valerian — he’s awake. he’s been awake for nearly an hour now."

The Emperor’s quill stilled mid-stroke, ink pooling slow and forgotten against the parchment beneath his hand.

"awake," he repeated slowly, disbelief and something achingly fragile crashing through his careful composure all at once.

"yes, Your Majesty. Commander Calloway and Prince Jayden are already with him, and Sentinel Logan as well."

The Emperor set down his quill with careful, deliberate precision, though his hands trembled faintly despite the effort at composure. "thank you," he said. "you’re dismissed."

The runner bowed and left, and the Emperor remained seated at his desk a long moment longer, staring at nothing, the weight of six weeks’ worth of grief and hope and careful, guarded restraint all crashing together at once.

He didn’t move immediately. ’what do I even say to him,’ he thought, turning the question over with careful, methodical focus despite the urgency clawing at his chest to simply go, to see for himself, to confirm the impossible relief flooding through him with his own eyes. ’I sat beside him every night I could manage, and I told him things I’ve never said to another living soul. does he remember any of it. does it matter to him at all, or was it simply words spoken into an unconscious silence that meant nothing once he actually woke.’

He thought of Reid’s raw, exhausted confessions, murmured close beside Julian’s bed on nights when the Emperor himself had come later, quieter, careful not to intrude on moments that clearly belonged to someone else. He thought of Jayden’s fierce, stubborn devotion, of Logan’s aching guilt. He thought of his own quiet vow, spoken alone in an empty war room weeks and weeks ago now, promising a man who couldn’t hear him that he would never stop searching.

’I don’t know if he heard any of it,’ the Emperor thought slowly, uncertainty settling heavy through his racing thoughts. ’the healers always said it was possible, that some part of a person in that state might still register sound, still hold onto fragments even without full awareness. but I have no way of knowing whether that’s true, or whether every word I ever said to him simply dissolved into silence the moment I left the room.’

The uncertainty sat heavy and unfamiliar in his chest — not quite fear, not quite hope, something more complicated tangled between the two. He’d spent his entire life commanding absolute authority, never once required to consider how his own words might be received, judged, weighed against someone else’s expectations. And now, for the first time in longer than he could properly remember, he found himself genuinely uncertain how to approach a conversation he’d been dreading and longing for in equal measure, with no way of knowing which version of himself Julian would actually be meeting — a stranger with no memory of those quiet, unanswered nights, or a man who’d heard every fragile, unguarded word.

’I need a moment,’ he thought finally, forcing himself to breathe slow and even despite the urgency still clawing at his chest. ’just a moment, to think clearly about what I actually want to say, rather than rushing in and saying something I’ll regret the second it’s spoken.’

He rose from his desk slowly, moving toward the window instead of the door, staring out at the academy grounds visible in the distance, sunlight bright and clear over grounds still bearing the scars of recent crisis.

’he’s awake,’ the Emperor thought again, letting the words settle properly this time, relief finally, fully breaking through the careful restraint he’d been holding onto. ’after everything. he’s actually awake.’

He remained at the window a long while longer, turning careful, deliberate thoughts over in his mind, weighing every possible word against the memory of everything he’d already said, unheard, into that quiet room over six long weeks.

Finally, resolve settling firm and absolute behind his exhausted, hopeful eyes, he turned from the window and moved toward the door.

’whatever I say,’ he thought, straightening his robes with careful, deliberate precision, ’it needs to be honest. he’s earned that much, at the very least, after everything he’s survived.’

He left his study at a measured, purposeful pace, the urgency in his chest tempered now by careful, hard-won resolve, making his way through the palace corridors toward the academy grounds, toward the room where the man he’d promised himself, alone in the dark, that he would never lose again, finally, impossibly, waited for him, awake.
