Chapter 113: Awake
The two Sentinels shoving each other in the training yard didn’t notice Julian’s approach until he was already standing between them, fan held loose and steady just below his eyes, calm and utterly unbothered by the shouting still echoing off the surrounding walls. "that’s enough," Julian said quietly.
Both men froze mid-argument, startled by the sudden, hooded presence that had simply appeared between them without either registering how he’d gotten there. "who—" one of them started.
Julian tilted his head slightly, and something in the small, unhurried motion carried more weight than any raised voice could have managed. "you woke me up," he said, voice mild, pleasant, and entirely without warmth. "six weeks of very hard-earned rest, ruined by whatever this was about. I’d like it to stop now."
Neither Sentinel moved, some old animal instinct clearly recognizing danger despite the calm, unbothered tone, both of them straightening automatically into something close to attention.
"apologies," the first one managed, voice cracking slightly.
"good," Julian said, already turning away, the fan lowering just enough to reveal the faint, satisfied curve of his mouth before he snapped it shut and tucked it away entirely. "carry on. quietly."
The two Sentinels stared after him, exchanging a wide-eyed, disbelieving glance, neither one entirely certain what had just happened, only that whoever the hooded stranger was, neither of them intended to raise their voices anywhere near him again.
"that was almost too easy," the fox murmured, trotting alongside Julian as he made his way back toward the medical wing, tails still faintly bristled. "you didn’t even threaten them."
"didn’t need to," Julian said, pulling the hood back slightly, letting his own face settle back into view now that the immediate irritation had passed. "some things don’t need volume to land properly."
They rounded the corner back toward the medical wing, and Julian slowed as a familiar figure came into view ahead — one of the healers, clipboard in hand, freezing mid-step at the sight of him standing upright, dressed, walking under his own power.
"Guide Valerian," she breathed, disbelief crashing across her face. "you’re— you’re awake."
"apparently," Julian said, something wry threading through the word.
"I need to— someone needs to know immediately," she said, already fumbling for the nearest messenger bell, hands shaking with sudden, overwhelmed urgency. "Commander Calloway, Prince Jayden, the Emperor, they’ve all been— they need to know right now."
Julian didn’t stop her, simply watching with quiet, unhurried patience as she rang the alert, voice already calling out toward the corridor for runners to spread the news as fast as physically possible.
Word moved through the academy faster than Julian expected, the news apparently outpacing even his own slow, deliberate walk back toward his room, murmurs and disbelieving gasps trailing him through every corridor he passed, students and staff alike stopping mid-motion to stare at the sight of the missing Guide, awake and walking, after six long weeks of uncertain, grieving silence.
He’d barely settled back onto the edge of his bed when the door burst open, Reid skidding to a stop in the doorway, chest heaving like he’d run the entire distance from wherever the news had first reached him.
"Julian," Reid breathed, disbelief and raw, overwhelming relief crashing across his exhausted features. "you’re— they said you were awake, I thought—"
"I’m awake," Julian confirmed, something calm and faintly amused settling behind his tired eyes as he watched Reid cross the room in three fast strides, dropping to his knees beside the bed like his legs had simply given out from the sheer force of relief.
"six weeks," Reid said, voice cracking, reaching for Julian’s hand with both of his own, gripping tight like he still didn’t quite believe it was real. "six weeks, Julian, I thought—"
"I heard," Julian said quietly.
Reid froze.
"most of it, anyway," Julian continued, something careful and pointed threading beneath the calm. "fragments. enough."
Color drained slightly from Reid’s exhausted face. "how much," he said slowly, "is ’enough.’"
Julian didn’t answer directly, simply studying him with the same faint, unreadable calm he’d carried into the training yard minutes earlier, and Reid’s composure cracked visibly under the weight of it.
Footsteps thundered down the corridor before either of them could say anything further, and Jayden burst through the doorway moments later, breathless, gold light already flickering unstable around his exhausted fists from the sheer force of his rush across the academy grounds.
"Julian," he gasped, and then simply stopped, staring, disbelief and joy tangling together so completely across his face that words seemed to fail him entirely.
"hey there," Julian said mildly.
Jayden crossed the room fast, dropping down on the opposite side of the bed from Reid, gripping Julian’s other hand with the same desperate, disbelieving relief. "you’re awake," he said, voice thick. "you’re actually—"
"I heard you too," Julian said, the same careful, pointed calm settling into his voice.
Jayden blinked. "heard me—"
"everything you said," Julian clarified, watching both their faces with quiet, patient interest as understanding began, slowly, to dawn across each of them in turn. "every visit. every single word, apparently, filtered through whatever state I was in."
The room went very quiet. Logan arrived moments later, skidding to a stop in the doorway with the same breathless disbelief Reid and Jayden had both carried in with them, and froze the instant he registered the tense, careful silence already hanging thick over the room.
"what’s happening," Logan said slowly, glancing between Reid’s pale, stricken face and Jayden’s matching expression.
"apparently," Julian said, voice still mild, still calm, still carrying that same faint, dangerous edge that had sent two full-grown Sentinels scrambling for composure in the training yard minutes earlier, "I heard every single thing all three of you said to me over the past six weeks. every night. every visit."
Logan’s face went pale to match the others’, the color draining fast from his exhausted features.
"every word," Julian confirmed, watching all three of them with calm, unhurried patience, something faintly, dangerously amused flickering behind his tired eyes. "which means we have quite a lot to discuss, don’t we."
Nobody in the room said anything for a long, heavy moment, the weight of six weeks’ worth of raw, unguarded confessions settling thick and inescapable across all three men now standing frozen at Julian’s bedside.
"Julian," Reid managed finally, voice rough, "I meant every word of it. every single thing I said."
"so did I," Jayden said quickly, gold light still flickering unsteady around his exhausted fists.
Logan swallowed hard, stepping fully into the room now, something raw and vulnerable settling across his expression despite the obvious fear still tangled beneath it. "me too," he said quietly. "I meant it too."
Julian studied all three of them in turn, calm and unhurried, letting the silence stretch a moment longer than strictly comfortable before finally, slowly, allowing something warmer to break through the careful stillness he’d carried since waking.
"good," he said finally, voice quiet. "because I heard all of it. and I’m not letting a single one of you take it back now."
